Leveraging Social Media and AI for Early Community Mental Health Support.

Background Mental health conditions have become a leading cause of disability worldwide, yet stigma, financial barriers, and limited access to care impede effective treatment. Amid these challenges, more people are turning to online platforms like Reddit to express psychological distress and seek informal support. However, these platforms often lack mechanisms to guide users toward professional care. This study explores a community-facing framework that leverages natural language processing and large language models (LLMs) to detect mental health concerns in social media posts and generate per

Uncovering Relationships Between Demoralization, Attachment, and Social Support in Oncology Patients.

Demoralization is a syndrome of existential distress characterized by helplessness, hopelessness, loss of meaning, personal failure, and difficulty coping. This study explored the correlation between demoralization, social support, and attachment to health care providers in cancer patients. We conducted an observational, cross-sectional study with 150 inpatients and outpatients (≥ 18 years) from two hospitals. Personal and medical data were collected; patients completed psychometric instruments: Demoralization Scale II (DS-II), Experiences in Close Relationship Scale-Modified Short Form (ECR-M…

Social support facilitates threat extinction retention in humans: an fMRI study.

Extinction is a recognized process for extinguishing threat memories; however, the process of extinction can be emotionally challenging, and the effect is usually short-lived. Animal studies have shown that peer presentation can inhibit freezing behavior and prevent return of the threat memories, suggesting that social support may enhance threat extinction. However, the role of social support in maintaining human threat extinction remains unclear. The present study examined the effect of social support on threat memory extinction in humans, and its underlying neural substrates. Succeeding thre…

Social support and trauma experiences of imprisoned men in Northern Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Social Support has multiple benefits for health and mental wellbeing. Its existence, and the extent to which it can be beneficial, is dependent upon the context in which it is provided, and the recipients' view of it. Social support has long been established as a 'buffer' to the negative impact of stressful life experiences. Trauma can negatively impact upon social support, reducing the extent of social networks and ability of some trauma experienced individuals to sustain extensive social support networks. However, some trauma experiences can also strengthen social relationships. …

Social Support Networks Among Black Caregivers of Persons With Memory Problems.

Positive social support can predict health outcomes in populations that experience significant burdens, such as minority caregivers. The purpose of the current study was to detail the social network (SN) of 36 Black family caregivers (FCGs) for persons with memory problems (PWMP) and examine differences in SN support depending on FCG gender and relationship to the care recipient. Participants were recruited from the Alzheimer's family program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the local community. FCGs were categorized into adult children (ACH), grandchildren and in-law children, a…

Social support and mental health: the mediating role of perceived stress.

Social support has been associated with improved mental health; however, the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear. This study aimed to explore whether perceived stress mediate the relationship between social support and positive affect, anxiety, and depression. Drawing from Lazarus and Folkman's stress and coping theory, the study emphasized the influential role of social support in appraising stressful events. A cross-sectional survey was conducted online among 426 Filipino adults during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants completed measures including the Multidi…

Perceived Social Support and Connectedness in Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Engagement.

Perceived social support has been posited as an important factor in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) cessation. Although, previous research suggests that social connectedness is the mechanism through which perceived social support influences psychological wellbeing. Thus, the present study investigated whether social connectedness is the mechanism through which perceived social support functions to influence NSSI engagement. Fifty-six women with (Mage = 20.18, SD = 2.07) and 84 without (Mage = 20.24, SD = 1.98) a history of NSSI completed online measures of perceived social support and social c…

Social Support and Adherence to Treatment Regimens among Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Following recommended treatment plans is essential to the success of the treatment. In hemodialysis, adherence to the treatment regimen remains a challenge in many healthcare settings. Many factors, including the patient's level of social support, influence treatment adherence, but few studies have addressed these relationships. METHODS: A correlational cross-sectional design was used to assess the relationship between perceived social support and adherence to treatment regimens among patients undergoing hemodialysis. Self-reported surveys were used to collect data. RE…

Mental health and social support among Royal Canadian Mounted Police cadets.

INTRODUCTION: Certain populations, such as public safety personnel (PSP), experience frequent exposures to potentially psychologically traumatic events and other occupational stressors, increasing their risk for mental health challenges. Social support has been evidenced as a protective factor for mental health. However, research examining perceived social support and its associations with symptoms related to mental disorders among PSP recruits is limited. METHODS: RCMP cadets (n = 765, 72% male) completed self-report surveys assessing: sociodemographic information, social support, and sympto…

Provision of social support and mental health in U.S. military veterans.

While social support has been linked to better health, most research has focused on the receipt of social support. In this study, we evaluated associations between provided support and mental health in a nationally representative cohort of 4069 US veterans. The majority (60-72%) of veterans reported providing support on a consistent basis. Veterans who scored higher on certain aspects of personality (i.e., agreeableness, conscientiousness, and extraversion) and received greater support were more likely to provide support. Further, each standard deviation increase in provided support was indepe…

Social Support in the Peritoneal Dialysis Experience: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: People with end-stage kidney disease can either pursue conservative (palliative) management or kidney replacement therapy. Although transplant is preferred, there is a limited number of organs available rendering the majority of patients treated with some form of dialysis. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are equivalent regarding clinical outcomes, but peritoneal dialysis is much less costly to provide. Peritoneal dialysis is most often done in the home by the patient or a support person and carries a self-care burden on patients and families. Social support is important for pa…

Periconceptional stressors and social support and risk for adverse birth outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of preterm birth and low birth weight has been increasing slightly in recent years. A few studies have suggested that psychosocial stress during pregnancy may increase risk for these adverse birth outcomes. To extend those observations, we analyzed various major life event stressors separately and cumulatively as potential risk factors for preterm birth and low birth weight using granular categories of each outcome in a large, population-based study. Additionally, we assessed if greater social support buffered any effects. METHODS: Data were from a nested prevalence…
