Prospective study evaluating the incidence of bacteraemia and bacteruria in afebrile and febrile neutropaenic dogs undergoing chemotherapy.

The purpose of this prospective study was to determine the incidence and character of bacteraemia and bacteruria in afebrile and febrile neutropaenic dogs undergoing cytotoxic chemotherapy. Fifty-five neutropaenic dogs presenting to the University of Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital were enrolled for a total of 57 neutropaenic episodes. The overall incidence of bacteraemia was 12.3% (n = 7/57). Three afebrile dogs and four febrile dogs were bacteraemic; this difference was not significant (P = 0.6968). The overall incidence of bacteruria was 7.5% (n = 4/53). Two afebrile dogs and

Medical infrared thermal imaging of canine appendicular bone neoplasia.

BackgroundMedical infrared thermal imaging (MITI) is a noninvasive imaging modality used in veterinary medicine as a screening tool for musculoskeletal and neurological disease processes. An infrared camera measures the surface body heat and produces a color map that represents the heat distribution. Local trauma or disease can impair the autonomic nervous system, which leads to changes in the local dermal microcirculation and subsequent alteration of surface body heat. Disruption of autonomic flow to the cutaneous vasculature at deeper levels can also result in asymmetric thermographic result

Acute kidney injury manifesting as renal tubular acidosis with proximal and distal renal tubular dysfunction in a dog with acute pancreatitis.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical presentation and management of a critically ill dog with profound renal tubular acidosis (RTA) with proximal and distal renal tubular dysfunction. CASE SUMMARY: A 3-year-old neutered female Border Terrier was presented with frequent regurgitation resulting from acute pancreatitis with severe ileus. Venous acid-base analysis and complete urinalysis confirmed the presence of normal anion gap metabolic acidosis with inappropriately alkaline urine (pH 8), consistent with distal RTA. Urinalysis, urine amino acids, and urinary fractional excretion of electrolytes

Drug Repurposing in Veterinary Oncology: Myth or Reality?

Drug repurposing, that is, the identification of new therapeutic indications for existing medications, has been shown to be a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative to de novo drug development. This review provides a comprehensive overview of repurposed drugs in veterinary oncology, describing their mechanisms of action, current evidence of clinical benefit, and translational relevance. The therapeutic agents discussed include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., piroxicam), metabolic modulators (e.g., metformin), anti-parasitic drugs (e.g., fenbendazole), immunomodulators (e.g.

Retrospective assessment of tolerability and efficacy of zoledronate in the palliative treatment of cancer-bearing dogs.

Zoledronate is a bisphosphonate frequently used for the treatment of hypercalcaemia of malignancy and tumour-associated bone pain in dogs, however, there is a paucity of information regarding its use in veterinary medicine. The aim of this retrospective study was to report the tolerability of zoledronate in the palliative treatment of cancer-bearing dogs and secondarily to to assess the efficacy of zoledronate for the treatment of hypercalcaemia of malignancy. Thirty-seven dogs (22 with tumour-associated bone pain and 15 with hypercalcaemia of malignancy) that received 114 zoledronate infusion

Beyond Individual Acute Phase Protein Assessments: Introducing the Acute Phase Index (API) as a Prognostic Indicator in Dogs with Malignant Neoplasia.

Acute phase proteins (APPs) are part of the innate immune response, changing during inflammation. An Acute Phase Index (API) is a calculated value that combines multiple APPs. In human medicine, the introduction of APIs has improved outcome monitoring. In veterinary medicine, APIs have been evaluated in livestock and dogs with Leishmaniasis. This study aimed to calculate an API and evaluate its significance in cancer-bearing dogs. Sera were collected from 55 dogs, which were classified by neoplastic category and survival times (> or < than 30 and 90 days). For 32 dogs, multiple samples were av

Cannabis, One Health, and Veterinary Medicine: Cannabinoids' Role in Public Health, Food Safety, and Translational Medicine.

Public health is connected to cannabis with regard to food, animal feed (feed), and pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the use of phytocannabinoids should be examined from a One Health perspective. Current knowledge on medical cannabis treatment (MCT) does not address sufficiently diseases which are of epidemiological and of zoonotic concern. The use of cannabinoids in veterinary medicine is illegal in most countries, mostly due to lack of evidence-based medicine. To answer the growing need of scientific evidence-based applicable medicine in both human and veterinary medicine, a new approach for the

Localized fungal osteomyelitis caused by Aspergillus sp. in the ilium and acetabulum of a dog with disseminated aspergillosis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Osteomyelitis caused by Aspergillus sp. is uncommon in dogs and cats and may occur in cases of disseminated aspergillosis, a rare and poorly described condition in veterinary medicine. CASE DESCRIPTION: Due to the scarcity of reports documenting this disease, particularly with localized involvement of the pelvic bones, the present case report aimed to describe the condition in an 8-year-old mixed-breed dog presenting with severe pain and lameness of the right pelvic limb. Radiographic examination revealed marked periosteal bone proliferation and osteolysis extending from the right

Some Aspects and Convergence of Human and Veterinary Drug Repositioning.

Drug innovation traditionally follows a de novo approach with new molecules through a complex preclinical and clinical pathway. In addition to this strategy, drug repositioning has also become an important complementary approach, which can be shorter, cheaper, and less risky. This review provides an overview of drug innovation in both human and veterinary medicine, with a focus on drug repositioning. The evolution of drug repositioning and the effectiveness of this approach are presented, including the growing role of data science and computational modeling methods in identifying drugs with po

Oral chemotherapy agents in cats: clinical uses, administration and side effects.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Cancer is a very common disease in cats, and many feline patients will require chemotherapy as part of their treatment plan, either as a sole agent or as part of multimodality therapy. Although some general practitioners might be reluctant to undertake injectable chemotherapy, oral chemotherapy may feel like a more acceptable treatment option to manage in practice. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: The small body size of many cats means that tablet sizes made for the human market are less appropriate, which creates dosing challenges. The administration of oral medication can also be a

Serum Onconeural Antibodies in Dogs and Cats for Early Diagnosis of Cancer.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in dogs and cats worldwide, and effective early detection techniques and reliable therapies are still lacking. Given the high demand for early cancer detection and differentiation in veterinary diagnostics, we developed and validated a new diagnostic approach to assess onconeural antibodies, also known as high-risk antibodies, in dog and cat blood serum samples. We determined the presence of systemic onconeural/high-risk (ONHR) antibodies, their suitability for early cancer diagnostics, and the feasibility of differentiating various malignancies. Ou

Comparison of two melphalan protocols and evaluation of outcome and prognostic factors in multiple myeloma in dogs.

BackgroundMultiple myeloma (MM) in dogs typically is treated with melphalan. A daily melphalan dosing schedule reportedly is well tolerated and associated with favorable outcome. Although anecdotally a pulse dose regimen has resulted in successful responses, little long-term outcome and safety data is available regarding this dosing regimen for dogs with MM.Hypothesis/objectives(1) To compare outcome and adverse event profiles between pulse dose and daily dose melphalan schedules and (2) to report prognostic factors in dogs with MM treated with melphalan. Canine Gastric Cancer: Current Treatment Approaches.

Human gastric cancer (GC) ranks as the fifth most prevalent cancer worldwide, and is the third leading cause of cancer-related death. The incidence of GC is lower in dogs than in humans, accounting for less than 1% of all canine malignancies. In recent years, efforts have been made to understand the pathogenesis of GC and in find an appropriate therapy to maximize curative results, such as adjuvant chemotherapy treatments in addition to surgery. Although surgery is the first-line treatment, it is associated with several complications. In terms of chemotherapeutic intervention, canine gastric c
