The relationship of obsessive-compulsive disorder to possible spectrum disorders: results from a family study.

BACKGROUND: The familial relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and "obsessive-compulsive spectrum" disorders is unclear. This study investigates the relationship of OCD to somatoform disorders (body dysmorphic disorder [BDD] and hypochondriasis), eating disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa), pathologic "grooming" conditions (e.g., nail biting, skin picking, trichotillomania), and other impulse control disorders (e.g., kleptomania, pathologic gambling, pyromania) using blinded family study methodology. METHODS: Eighty case and 73 control probands, as well as…

Shenjing shuairuo and the DSM-IV: diagnosis, distress, and disability in a Chinese primary care setting.

This study examines diagnostic concordance, symptomatology and disability among Chinese patients with shenjing shuairuo, ICD-10 neurasthenia, and DSM-IV diagnoses. Patients (N=139) with unexplained somatic complaints completed the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III (SCID), the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), and the Short Form 36 (SF-36). Shenjing shuairuo could be reclassified as DSM-IV undifferentiated somatoform disorder (30.6%) and somatoform pain disorder (22.4%); however, 44.9% did not qualify for a core DSM-IV diagnosis. Concordance of neurasthenia and shenjing shuairuo was signif

We tested three null hypotheses: (1) pati … tress disorder (24% versus 7.5%), and panic disorder (12.2% versus 5%). The presence of anxiety and somatoform disorders predicted pain type (nonspecific versus specific) and arm-specific disability (DASH). Somatoform dissociative symptoms as related to animal defensive reactions to predatory imminence and injury.

The authors hypothesized that there would be a similarity between animal defensive responses to variable predatory imminence and injury and certain somatoform dissociative symptoms of trauma-reporting patients who have dissociative disorder. As a first test of this hypothesis, 12 somatoform symptom clusters consisting of clinically observed somatoform dissociative phenomena were constructed. All clusters discriminated between patients with dissociative disorders (n = 50) and patients with other psychiatric diagnoses (n = 50). Those expressive of the hypothesized similarity--freezing, anesthesi

Dissociative symptom trajectories during treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors for depressive or anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Dissociative symptoms often co-occur with depressive and anxiety disorders and may worsen treatment outcomes. Little is known about how different forms of dissociation - psychoform and somatoform - change during pharmacotherapy with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). OBJECTIVE: Our study examined changes in dissociative symptoms during SSRI treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders and whether they follow a distinct course or are associated with treatment outcomes. METHOD: We conducted a longitudinal naturalistic, observational study of 100 outpatients with depr

[Functional dysphonia: relation with personality and ICD-10 criteria].

The International Classification of Diseases, 10th. revision (ICD-10) in the category F45 defines the somatoform disorder as a mental disease characterized by the reiterative presentation of somatic symptoms in absence of an organic disease, or the somatic pathology being insufficient to explain the intensity of the symptoms as well as the discomfort and preoccupation of the patient. Fifteen female teachers with functional dysphonia were studied by means of a semistructured interview and psychometric evaluations. Considering dysphonia as the principal symptom, the most frequent diagnosis, in a

Dissociation Among Women with Chronic Pelvic Pain: Relation to Surgical Treatment, Pelvic Pain Severity, and Health-Related Quality of Life.

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is associated with a history of trauma and symptoms of somatoform dissociation. We aimed to describe how somatoform dissociation impacts CPP symptoms, surgical treatment, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Patients (N = 133) diagnosed with CPP presenting for an appointment at a women's health clinic between November, 2019 - July, 2021 were recruited to participate in a cross-sectional study and complete a survey assessing symptoms of somatoform dissociation, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), pelvic pain severity, history of CPP-related surgeries, and men

[The psychosomatics of chronic back pain. Classification, aetiology and therapy].

An overview is given on the current classification, description and treatment of chronic pain with causally relevant psychological factors. It is based on the "practice guidelines on somatoform disorders" and on a thematically related meta-analysis. The classificatory problems, especially of the demarcation of somatoform and other chronic pain, are presented. Additional descriptive dimensions of the relevant psychosocial factors are: pain description, other organically unexplained pain- and non-pain-symptoms, anxiety and depression, disease conviction and illness behaviour, personality and chi…

Absorption and Depersonalisation Derealisation Link Childhood Trauma to BPD Severity and Show Strong Independent Predictive Effects for Various BPD Symptom Domains.

Dissociative experiences are highly common in borderline personality disorder (BPD) and have been associated with childhood abuse and neglect. Only few studies so far differentiated between specific forms of psychoform and somatoform dissociation, childhood trauma, and BPD domains. This study aimed to simultaneously investigate how psychoform dissociation (depersonalization derealization, absorption, amnesia), somatoform dissociation, and childhood trauma (emotional, sexual, and physical abuse, and neglect) are linked to clinically assessed BPD core symptoms by reanalyzing a previously publish
