BACKGROUND: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) affects a child's ability to produce sounds and syllables precisely and consistently, and to produce words and sentences with accuracy and correct speech rhythm. It is a rare condition, affecting only 0.1% of the general population. Consensus has been reached that three core features have diagnostic validity: (1) inconsistent error production on both consonants and vowels across repeated productions of syllables or words; (2) lengthened and impaired coarticulatory transitions between sounds and syllables; and (3) inappropriate prosody (ASHA 2007).

Discharging clients with acquired brain injury can be a challenging process for all parties involved. In this response to Hersh (2010), three issues are raised which are relevant to the discussion of discharge and may offer some solutions to the dilemmas faced during this time. The first issue is that discharge may not always be necessary depending on the service delivery model that is used. The second issue is that recent advances in experience-dependent neuroplasticity research may change the way clinicians determine treatment goals, which has implications for discharge decisions. Finally, a

PURPOSE: School-based speech-language pathologists are at the frontline for treating children with pediatric feeding disorders (PFDs). Often, speech-language pathologists are the primary allied health professionals who are charged with maximizing safety, supporting nutrition and neurodevelopmental growth. Due to the increasing need for assessment and treatment of PFDs in schools, it is fundamental that PFDs and dysphagia are detected, differentially diagnosed, and addressed to support developing children. This tutorial addresses the anatomy, physiology, and development of functional feeding an

Communication disorders in Israel is a well-established professional field, requiring academic training and dual certification in speech pathology and audiology. Entry level is a BA in communication disorders (comparable to a MA degree in the USA) and 1 year of work under supervision. It is possible to continue studies towards higher degrees (MA and PhD). We face the same problems as in the rest of the world with need for trained professionals in the social services and the need to deal with multilingual and multicultural issues.

BACKGROUND: language and communication disorders are essential features of the autistic spectrum disorders, and are part of the diagnostic criteria.
AIM: to verify the existence of observable differences in the functional communicative profile and in the social cognitive performance of autistic children and adolescents receiving language therapy in three different situations. Assessment focused on the period of modified intervention and on the following period.
METHOD: subjects were children and adolescents with psychiatric diagnosis within the autistic spectrum. Participants were divided in

OBJECTIVES: This project aimed to compare perceptual ratings of voice quality of normal and disordered voices of Australian English speakers and Hong Kong (HK) Cantonese speakers across speech pathology student listeners who spoke Cantonese (tone) first language vs English (non-tone) first language.
METHODS: In total, 54 speech pathology students from HK and 54 speech pathology students from Australia participated in this study. After excluding speakers of other languages, 57 Cantonese first language and 37 English first language speakers were included. They rated overall severity (OS), rough

Because speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and audiologists (AUDs) are among the first referrals for parents of children exhibiting feeding, speech, language, hearing, and balance difficulties, it is important for SLP and AUD professionals to recognize genetic causes of and contributions to complex and Mendelian communication disorders. We review genetics in the curricula of speech-language pathology and audiology programs and obstacles to its integration throughout curricula. We present suggestions about how SLPs and AUDs can aid in diagnosis and contribute their clinical expertise in charac…

BACKGROUND: Meta-therapy (MT) is a powerful dialogue-based element of voice therapy that scaffolds patients' cognitive models of treatment. MT dialogues have not historically been taught in an explicit manner, and substantial variability in identifying MT exists within and across clinicians. This low reliability is problematic for empirical research and educational transfer. Harnessing contemporary natural language processing technologies to stress test the concept of MT and its clinical instances may enhance our theoretical and empirical grasp of the construct.
METHOD: To capture crucial the

UNLABELLED: Research in related fields that employ behavioral interventions indicates that factors common to treatment programs may be more important to successful outcomes than specific components of a treatment. Applying this concept to speech-language pathology, we investigated one hypothesized "common factor," namely, the clinician who implements treatment. Data were collected from limited samples of speech-language clinicians in two surveys. In Study One, 79 participants responded to open-ended questions about the nature of effective clinicians. A thematic analysis of their responses resu…

PURPOSE: It is often difficult for school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to prioritize implementing new practices for children with speech sound disorders (SSDs), given burgeoning caseloads and the myriad of other workload tasks. We propose that de-implementation science is equally as important as implementation science. De-implementation science is the recognition and identification of areas that are of "low-value and wasteful." Critically, the idea of de-implementation suggests that we first remove something from a clinician's workload before requesting that they learn and impleme

RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Little is documented about contemporary management of speech and swallowing disorders associated with paediatric acquired brain injury (ABI). It is therefore challenging for clinicians in this field to benchmark their clinical management against current evidence or practices undertaken in other centres. To address this issue, we aimed to provide much-needed baseline data on speech and language pathology management of speech and swallowing disorders associated with childhood ABI. Key objectives were to: (i) determine whether clinicians use formalized referral cri

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) provide communicative and cognitive rehabilitation for people with brain injuries, and this article describes current assessment and treatment after a brain injury. Cognitive problems can affect attention, concentration, and memory, as well as metacognitive skills to self-monitor, control, and adjust one's thinking. Speech-language pathology (SLP) rehabilitation is initiated in acute inpatient settings and then through a continuum of inpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing facility, home care, and outpatient settings. Speech-language pathology helps adults…

We are beginning a decade, during which many traditional paradigms in education, special education, and speech-language pathology will undergo change. Among paradigms considered promising for speech-language pathology in the schools are collaborative language intervention and strategy training for language and communication. This presentation introduces management models for developing a collaborative language intervention process, among them the Deming Management Method for Total Quality (TQ) (Deming 1986). Implementation models for language assessment and IEP planning and multicultural issue…

Children with cleft palates often suffer from chronic conductive hearing losses, delayed language acquisition and speech disorders. This study presents results of speech and language outcomes in relation to hearing function and types of palatal malformations found. 417 children with cleft palates were examined during followup evaluations that extended over several years. Disorders were studied as they affected the ears, nose and throat, audiometry and speech and language pathology. Children with isolated cleft lips were excluded. Among the total group, 8% had normal speech and language develop

UNLABELLED: A major challenge for the speech-language pathology profession in many cultures is to address the mismatch between the "linguistic homogeneity of the speech-language pathology profession and the linguistic diversity of its clientele" (Caesar & Kohler, 2007, p. 198). This paper outlines the development of the Multilingual Children with Speech Sound Disorders: Position Paper created to guide speech-language pathologists' (SLPs') facilitation of multilingual children's speech. An international expert panel was assembled comprising 57 researchers (SLPs, linguists, phoneticians, and spe…
