UNLABELLED: PROGRESSIVE DEFORMATION DURING ADULTHOOD: Though not commonly recognized, lumbar and thoracoscoliosis can progress during adulthood. This slow, insidious evolution concerns not only the anatomic configuration of the spinal curatures (three dimensional angular deformation) but also spinal function (development or aggravation of spinal or radicular pain and/or impaired equilibrium). This fact emphasizes the importance of regular prolonged surveillance of all patients with spinal deformations.
RADIOLOGICAL CHANGES: Three anatomic elements affecting function are evidenced on serial x-

We describe the clinical and radiological features observed in four patients with neurofibromatosis-related scoliosis or kyphoscoliosis who developed rib penetration into the intervertebral foraminae. Rib penetration should be searched for on standard and elective x-rays in patients with moderate curvatures. The diagnosis can be confirmed by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging of the spine. In case of major deviation, x-rays must be carefully examined, with an accurate search for spinal cord compression to avoid missing the diagnosis. Surgical treatment must consist in ablation o

We studied the effects of spondylodesis on spinal curvature, functional outcome, level of ambulation and perceived competence in 11 children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). Mean age at surgical intervention was 13.1 years (SD 2.5 years) and follow-up amounted to 3.4 years (SD 2.3 years). Spinal curvature was measured according to Cobb. The level of ambulation was scored according to the modified criteria of Bleck. Functional abilities and the amount of parental assistance were scored using the Dutch version of the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI). Perceived competence was

PURPOSE: Adult degenerative scoliosis arises after skeletal maturity in an initially normal spine, primarily driven by age-related degeneration. The Cobb angle, the angle between the most tilted vertebrae typically derived from radiographs, remains the clinical standard for assessing curvature severity, yet large-scale evaluation using MRI has not been feasible. This study developed an automated method for Cobb angle estimation from chemical-shift-based water-fat separation (Dixon) MRI and applied it to the UK Biobank to characterise the prevalence and curvature within the general population.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The prevalence and treatment of severe scoliosis and other spinal anomalies in patients with Turner's syndrome (TS) is not well reported. This is the largest case series to date regarding the treatment course and outcomes of severely scoliotic TS patients.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed to identify all patients with TS seen at a single center academic pediatric institution from 2007 to 2021. Of these, the presence of concomitant severe scoliosis or other spinal anomalies was determined, defined by a major coronal curve measuring 45° or greater. Demogr

BACKGROUND: Interspinous process implants, used to augment lumbar spine surgery, putatively induce a local segmental lumbar kyphosis yet few investigations outline the effect in vivo on thoracolumbar sagittal curvature. Changes in lumbar skeletal alignment and posture have traditionally relied upon radiographic and back surface spinal curvature measurements, respectively.
METHODS: Lumbar lordosis curvature in 10 healthy subjects (6F, 4M; mean age 36 years) and 10 interspinous implant lumbar surgery patients (5F, 5M; mean age 51 years) was assessed with rasterstereography at baseline and at 6

This study analysed the behaviour of the geometric curvature of the spine during sirshasana. The position of dorsal retroreflective markers was computed via stereophotogrammetric analysis in six males and five females (29.4 ± 8.8 years, 63.0 ± 11.4 kg, 1.66 ± 0.08 m [average ± standard deviation]). The spinal points were projected onto the sagittal and frontal planes of the trunk, a polynomial was fitted to the data and the two-dimensional geometric curvature was quantified. The inferior lumbar lordosis decreased compared to the orthostatic position and gait, which may favour the posterior pro

This review will report results and experience gained with intraoperative monitoring SSEP's (somatosensory-evoked potentials) during 61 operations on the spine for correction of scoliotic curvatures. The potentials were elicited by uni- or bilateral stimulation of the tibial nerve and recorded from the scalp. Four cases, in which we observed intraoperative or postoperative alterations in waveform or neurologic status, are described. The method is easily applicable, noninvasive, and can--in spite of its sensitivity to environmental influences--well provide information about the neurologic funct

Collapsing neuromuscular spinal curvature is extremely difficult to manage with standard rigid orthoses owing to skin breakdown and patient intolerance. Experience with a new, more malleable type of spinal brace (the "soft Boston orthosis") has been very rewarding in 55 children with neuromuscular scoliosis with an average curvature of 42 degrees. Patient tolerance was improved in 38%, patient handling was facilitated in 68%, and postural positioning was enhanced in 79%. Although improvement in the scoliosis averaged only 15 degrees, the major advantage of this orthosis was a marked improvemen

Camptocormia is a disabling postural disorder characterized by involuntary forward flexion of the thoracolumbar spine that resolves in the supine position. It is mostly associated with Parkinson's disease and parkinsonian syndromes, but may also occur in dystonia, paraspinal myopathies, and after exposure to some drugs. Available treatments, including postural aids, medication adjustment, and deep brain stimulation, are often only partly effective and may carry risk. Because overactivity of trunk flexor muscles is thought to contribute to camptocormia, botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) has emerged a

INTRODUCTION: Despite modern fixation techniques, spinopelvic fixation failure (SPFF) after adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery ranges from 4.5 to 38.0%, with approximately 50% requiring reoperation. Compared to other well-studied complications after ASD surgery, less is known about the incidence and predictors of SPFF.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: Given the high rates of SPFF and reoperation needed to treat it, the purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to report the incidence and failure mechanisms of SPF after ASD surgery.
MATERIALS/METHODS: The literature search was executed across

Parkinson's disease(PD)is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. Its cardinal features are resting tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability. Several years after disease onset, many patients with PD exhibit postural deformities, including camptocormia, Pisa syndrome, and dropped head syndrome, which can lead to spinal deformities. In addition, spinal degenerative disorders are frequently associated with PD and can further impact the patients' quality of life. Current evidence suggests a multifactorial etiology for postural deformities and spinal degenerative diso

Camptocormia or Bent Spine Syndrome (BSS) is a symptom, often unknown, affecting elderly patients. Camptocormia is a dynamic anteflexion of the trunk occurring during physical exercises or in standing position and reducible in decubitus. It is caused by an impairment of the extensor muscles of the spinal column, either idiopathic or secondary to a muscular or a neurological disease. Its diagnosis is primarily anamnestic and clinical. The use of imaging could highlight a paraver tebral muscular fatty infi l tration with preserved volume in the case of idiopathic disorder and allows exclusion of

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study was performed.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the natural history of untreated scoliosis in beta-thalassemia patients in a 10-year period.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Several previous studies have demonstrated the bone deformities, particularly the high incidence of scoliosis, that is associated with beta-thalassemia. However, little is known about the evolution of scoliosis curvatures, and almost nothing is known about the natural history of this type of scoliosis and its associated lateral spinal curvatures.
METHODS: From a group of 115 patients with beta-tha…

INTRODUCTION: 3D Non-Contact surface scanning (3DSS) is used in both biomechanical and clinical studies to capture accurate 3D images of the human torso, and to better understand the shape and posture of the spine-both healthy and pathological. This study sought to determine the efficacy and accuracy of using 3DSS of the posterior torso, to determine the curvature of the spinal column in the lateral lying position.
METHODS: A cohort of 50 healthy adults underwent 3DSS and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to correlate the contours of the external spine surface with the internal spinal column.

INTRODUCTION: Proximal junctional failure (PJF) remains a challenging complication following instrumented posterior fusion for adult spinal deformity (ASD). Although radiographic parameters such as lumbar lordosis (LL) and pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis mismatch (PI-LL) are frequently cited, their specific association with PJF risk is not fully defined. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to clarify whether postoperative LL, changes in LL (ΔLL), postoperative PI-LL, or changes in PI-LL (ΔPI-LL) are predictive of PJF in ASD.
METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 and Cochrane guidelines,
