Ankle arthrography and ankle distortion.

A ligament rupture is found in some 60% of patients with ankle distortion. The rupture usually involves the anterior talofibular ligament, and there may be associated ruptures of other ankle ligaments. Clinical findings and conventional radiological examination (including stress exposures) are insufficiently reliable for demonstration or exclusion of a ligament lesion. Ankle arthography is a relatively simple method of investigation; interpretation of the images obtained is generally no problem. Surgical exploration has nearly always confirmed the arthrographic diagnosis 'ligament lesion'.

Prevention of ankle sprains.

Ankles are sprained when supported on an unstable foundation, while too rididly fixed to the playing surface, or when forced into unnatural positions by extrinsic muscle tightness. The unstable foundation may be the shoe itself, a chuck-hole, or another player's foot. Undue fixation may be by 1-inch mud cleats, baseball spikes, or a modern wrestling mat. When these circumstances occur, heel cord tightness may alter the ankle's response. Thus, prevention of ankle sprains may be by modification of any of these factors.

A cooling method in the treatment of ankle sprains.

Cooling treatment with 'Cryogel' is compared with the use of crepe bandaging in patients with recent ankle sprains. All patients were followed up regularly and the results appears to favour cooling when it is used in the early period of treatment. Cooling reduced oedema, pain and disability, and shortened the recovery period.
