[How does oligo- en asymptomatic non-tropical sprue present itself?].

According to the computerized ICD registration, 20 new cases of non-tropical sprue were detected in our outpatient clinic between 1979 and 1990. 8 of these patients had an oligo- or asymptomatic form of this disease (40%). The clinical presentation and spectrum of abnormal laboratory findings in these 8 cases are described in detail. It is concluded that laboratory parameters indicating malabsorption, especially hematologic changes, are helpful for the detection of the oligo- and asymptomatic form of non-tropical sprue, and that, in cases with undetermined anemia, this form of sprue must be co

The Puerto Rico Journal of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (1925-1949): Coverage of Tropical Sprue.

Our current understanding of tropical sprue is that it is a malabsorption syndrome that responds to treatment with folic acid and a broad spectra antibiotic. This realization came only after countless years of research by legions of investigators. Twenty-seven individual studies on various aspects of tropical sprue were published in the Puerto Rico Journal of Public Health and Tropical Medicine from 1925 to 1949. This article summarizes significant findings, presented chronologically, and speculates on the direction of future investigations into tropical sprue.

[Tropical sprue revealed by severe anemia in a woman from Guadeloupe].

The case of a young woman from Guadeloupe developing severe megaloblastic anemia is reported. She presented with fever and hemolysis (she had heterozygotic beta-thalassemia) after a six month history of diarrhea. She was shown to have folate deficiency, steatorrhea, vitamin K and B12 malabsorption. She responded well to intravenous folinic acid and tetracyclines. Diagnosis was based on the following criteria: a) no other cause of malabsorption was found despite a comprehensive inquiry, b) the pattern of the illness corresponded to the definition of disease. Three particular aspects are outline

The relationship between hypoalbuminaemia and the radiological appearances of the jejunum in tropical sprue.

Hypoalbuminaemia has been implicated as a possible cause of the radiological abnormalities of the small intestine in tropical sprue. Barium follow-through examination was performed in 35 southern Indian patients with documented tropical sprue, and jejunal width and fold pattern abnormalities were compared with those of a local age-matched control group. Although hypoalbuminaemia was present in 66% of patients with tropical sprue, in only one case was an increase in jejunal calibre associated with a serum albumin concentration below 27 g/l, the threshold below which jejunal dilatation occurs in

Impaired intestinal absorption of dipeptide in tropical sprue patients in India.

1. Intestinal absorption of glycylglycine was studied in four control subjects and six patients with tropical sprue by using a direct technique of intestinal perfusion. 2. The patients with tropical sprue showed significant impairment in the absorption of the dipeptide.
