Background - Interventions for inmates with Pathological Addiction (PA) still remain a problematic issue in Italian prisons, despite a 1999 major government reform transferring PA care in prison to the National Health Service. Aim of this research was to describe the integrated intervention model implemented for prisoners with PA in the Parma Penitentiary Institutes from January 2020 to June 2020. This specific approach is based on "person-tailored" therapeutic-rehabilitation programs in line with local community PA services. Methods - All the procedures were first carefully illustrated, espec

All the readers of this journal will have read and heard about the ward and operating theatre sisters in 'the old days'. What were they really like, and what was it like to work with them in the hospitals of those far-off times? I entered the old Radcliffe Infirmary Oxford in the summer of 1945, just as World War II was drawing to a close, as a 19 year old student to start my clinical training. I then qualified in July 1948, the very month the NHS came into being, and started my surgical career as house surgeon. The Radcliffe was the only acute hospital in the town and dealt with all emergency

Rising social, health and healthcare challenges in Canada signal a need for a paradigm shift. This issue centres on the case for social prescribing - connecting patients to community resources via "link workers" - as strategic infrastructure for improved population health. The papers in this issue lay out a vision for the future, building on this social prescribing model, and offer implementation lessons, such as prioritizing high-complexity clients and maintaining an equity focus. They also raise some important cautions, such as the need to maintain a strong welfare state, to avoid narrow Nat

Hyperkalaemia is a common electrolyte imbalance with potentially serious short-, medium- and long-term consequences on morbidity and mortality rates and the use of national health service resources. The fact that different medical specialities can manage hyperkalaemia makes it important to have a unified approach, and the recent availability of new specific drug treatments means that the approach needs to be updated. This consensus document from the scientific societies most directly involved in the management of hyperkalaemia (Sociedad Española de Cardiología [Spanish Society of Cardiology],

A "history" of alcoholism may be 2 mo old or 20 yr ago. No two individuals are completely alike, and it would be nearly impossible to write a satisfactory regulation that could define when an individual is medically safe to return to flying. Individual consideration would seem to be the fairest way to deal with this issue.

The expansion of precision medicine has shifted toward individualized care tailored to a patient's genetic profile. While randomized controlled trials (RCTs) remain the gold standard for establishing efficacy, they often struggle to reflect the phenotypic diversity of patients in routine clinical practice. This paper explores the role of Real-World Data (RWD) and Real-World Evidence (RWE) in bridging this translational gap. A structured literature search identified peer-reviewed articles examining RWE applications in identifying rare genetic targets, informing clinical trial design, and suppor

Our laboratories are examining injuries and deaths resulting from mechanical forces applied to aircrew members in the course of Department of Defense aviation operations. In this paper we report only on bodily injuries sustained during ejection from US Air force, aircraft for the fiscal years 1981-1996, that is, major injuries and fatalities resulting directly from seat acceleration forces, from aerodynamic forces applied to crew members during escape through the effects of windblast and parachute opening shock; from direct contact: and from parachute landing injuries. Such injuries occur typi

Drug therapy during the Colonial and Revolutionary War period in America is discussed. Therapy in the 17th and 18th centuries remained largely symptomatic rather than curative. Treatment included such "depletion" measures as purging, sweating, bleeding, blistering and vomiting. Purgatives, emetics, opium, cinchona bark, camphor, potassium nitrate and mercury were among the most widely used drugs. European herbals, dispensatories and textbooks were used in the American colonies, and beginning in the early 18th century, British "patent medicines" were imported. During the Revolutionary War, the

CONTEXT: -Precision medicine is the promise of individualized therapy and management of patients based on their personal biology. There are now multiple global initiatives to perform whole-genome sequencing on millions of individuals. In the United States, an early program was the Million Veteran Program, and a more recent proposal in 2015 by the president of the United States is the Precision Medicine Initiative. To implement precision medicine in routine oncology care, genetic variants present in tumors need to be matched with effective clinical therapeutics. When we focus on the current sta
