A syndrome with coarse face, mental retardation and unusual stereotyped movements*.

We describe a mentally retarded 24-year-old man followed by our group since age 18 months who exhibited nearly continuous stereotypic movements while awake. These movements, which have persisted over many years, consist of synchronous lateral flexion at the neck and waist. Movements could be partially voluntarily suppressed and disappeared in sleep. The patient has drug-resistant seizures and a constellation of dysmorphic features, including coarse face, large nose, large thin lips, brachicephaly, marked hirsutism on the face, and limbs proportionally smaller than the trunk, which suggests tha

Reactions to ethnic deviance: The role of backlash in racial stereotype maintenance.

Backlash effects are social and economic penalties for counterstereotypical behavior (Rudman & Phelan, 2008). Five experiments support a model of the role of backlash in racial stereotype maintenance from the standpoint of perceivers and actors (Rudman & Fairchild, 2004). In Experiment 1, perceivers sabotaged Asians and Whites for succeeding in counterstereotypical domains, thereby preventing their future success. In Experiment 2, a White rapper suffered prejudice and economic discrimination, relative to a Black rapper, and prejudice mediated discrimination. Further, actors threatened by backl

Cocaine addiction: from habits to stereotypical-repetitive behaviors and punding.

"Punding" is a stereotypical motor behavior characterized by an intense fascination with repetitive handling and examining of objects. Since its first description in amphetamine and cocaine addicts, data on punding has only derived from studies performed in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Punding is classifiable as the most severe form of Repetitive Reward-Seeking Behaviours (RRSB) syndromes. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence and phenomelogy of RRSB acutely induced by cocaine in order to determine the prevalence, severity and distinctive features discriminating "p

[GABA(B) receptors and amnesia in mice withalternative stereotypes of behavior].

The influence of agonists and antagonists of GABA(B) receptors on the development of amnesia has been studied using the passive avoidance test in C57Bl/6J mice with previously generated aggressive and submissive behavioral stereotypes. It is established that baclofen in a dose of 1 mg/kg produces amnesia in aggressive mice and imparts stability with respect to the amnestic influence in submissive mice. Phaclofen in a dose of 5 mg/kg prevents the development of amnesia that is most strongly pronounced in submissive mice.

[Stereotypical thinking about food in the context of promoting weight gain].

The aim of the study was to define the respondents' skills to assess certain food as the source of energy which can promote weight gain. Questionnaire survey was carried out in autumn 2006 among 149 women ranging in age from 26 to 53. In this study the participants rated the weight-enhancing characteristics of food that possesses positive health reputations along with food that is more disreputable in terms of wholesomeness. The respondents' rates were resulted from the knowledge of food, but also from stereotypical thinking about selected products (e.g. chocolate as high-calorie food, yoghurt

Stereotyped behaviors or punding after quetiapine administration in Parkinson's disease.

Quetiapine has been suggested to be useful for the treatment of psychosis in patients with Parkinson's disease without prominent deterioration of motor functions. We present two patients with Parkinson's disease in whom administration of quetiapine for drug-induced psychosis caused characteristic stereotyped behaviors or punding. Since stereotyped behaviors are usually associated with excessive dopaminergic activity, it is clinically important to note that stereotyped behaviors or punding may be induced by an atypical antipsychotic drug for the treatment of psychosis in patients with Parkinson

Evidence for a cerebellar role in reduced exploration and stereotyped behavior in autism.

BACKGROUND: Although limited environmental exploration in autism is an obvious behavioral feature and may be a manifestation of "restricted interests" as described in DSM-IV criteria, there have been no behavioral or neurobiological studies of this important aspect of the disorder. Given consistent reports of cerebellar abnormality in autism, combined with animal research showing a relationship between exploration and the cerebellum, this study aimed to test the possible link between cerebellar abnormality and exploration in autism. METHODS: The relationship between visuospatial exploration,

Gender, power, and violence: assessing the family stereotypes of the children of batterers.

Two hundred twenty one children, ages 6 to 12 years, in families with varying levels of domestic violence rated how much they agreed with 40 items concerning stereotyped beliefs about power and violence in the family. Varimax analyses yielded 4 factors; Male Power, Female Power, Violence Privilege, and Family Autonomy. Internal reliability and construct validity for the Family Stereotypes Card Sort were evaluated. Significant positive associations were found among physical violence and emotional abuse reported by the mother and family role stereotyping in the child. Family role stereotyping an…

Sensitization of amphetamine-induced stereotyped behaviors during the acute response.

The quantitative and qualitative features of the behavioral response to amphetamine-like stimulants in rats can be dissociated from the dopamine response. This dissociation is particularly evident in the temporal profiles of the extracellular dopamine and stereotypy responses to higher doses of amphetamine. One possible mechanism contributing to this temporal dissociation is that during the acute response to amphetamine, dopamine receptor mechanisms are enhanced such that stereotyped behaviors can be supported by synaptic concentrations of dopamine which are not sufficient to initiate these be

Sensitization of apomorphine-induced stereotyped behavior in mice is context dependent.

RATIONALE: The role of the environment in the sensitization of the stereotyped behavioral effects of apomorphine is unclear, since sensitization of this drug effect has either been difficult to demonstrate or has been shown to occur with a low but not a higher dose of apomorphine. OBJECTIVES: The present study was designed to determine whether sensitization of the stereotyped behavioral effects induced by a single dose of apomorphine is dependent on environmental context. METHODS: CF-1 mice were pretreated with apomorphine or vehicle under different environmental conditions and tested for st

Stereotyped behavior in developmentally delayed or autistic populations. Rhythmic or nonrhythmic?

Stereotypies are high-frequency, highly repetitive, nonfunctional behaviors that are also often characterized as rhythmic. Rhythmicity suggests that the behavior is periodic, occurring at fixed intervals. Few studies, however, have rigorously demonstrated periodicity in stereotypy. This study examined various topographies of stereotypy in 9 participants and used spectral methods to detect existence of periodicties. Two general patterns emerged in the spectral analysis. Participants who engaged in stereotypic rocking showed peaks in their power spectra; participants who engaged in other topogra

Sigma1 receptor subtype does not interact with stereotyped behaviors in rats.

In the present study, we clearly showed that the sigma1 receptor subtype did not interact with the induction of stereotyped behaviors in rats. Namely, (+)-N-allylnormetazocine [(+)-SKF-10,047] (5.0, 10.0, and 20.0 mg/kg, SC), a traditional sigma receptor ligand that has affinities for the sigma1 receptor subtype and the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)/phencyclidine (PCP) receptor channel complex, markedly produced PCP-like stereotyped behaviors, such as head weaving, turning, and backpedaling, in rats. On the contrary, 1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-4-(3-phenylpropyl)piperazine dihydrochloride (SA4503),

Facial stereotypic movements and tardive dyskinesia in a mentally retarded population.

The facial stereotypies of adults diagnosed as having mental retardation and tardive dyskinesia were examined through a kinematic analysis of video-taped lip and tongue motions. A control group of healthy adult subjects without mental retardation was also examined in the production of preferred rates of lip and tongue oscillatory motions to provide a basis to assess the degree of movement variability in the stereotypies. The inter- and intraindividual variability of the movement form characteristics of the lip and tongue stereotypic motions was higher in the subjects with mental retardation. R

Management factors associated with stereotypic and redirected behaviour in the thoroughbred horse.

A greater knowledge of the effect of management factors is required to investigate the ontogeny of abnormal behaviour in the stabled horse. A postal survey of racehorse (flat) trainers yielded information about 22 yard and management factors. The relationship of the factors to the prevalence of abnormal behaviour was analysed by logistic regression. Management factors related to the time spent in the stable showed the strongest associations with stereotypic behaviour. The risk of horses performing abnormal behaviour increased: 1) as the amount of forage fell below 6.8 kg/day, 2) when bedding t

Prevalence and functions of stereotyped behaviors in nonhandicapped children in residential care.

Caregivers in nine residential care institutions rated the occurrence of 15 stereotyped behaviors in 142 nonhandicapped children aged from 10 months to 11 years. The frequency and duration of each stereotypy as well as the typical situations in which it occurred were assessed. The most frequent stereotypies were thumbsucking, hair twisting, and body rocking in infants and young children; thumbsucking and making faces in preschool-age children; and nail biting/chewing in school-age children. Boys exhibited stereotypies more frequently than girls, and children with a suspected history of child a

Stereotypes of smokers held by Hispanic and white non-Hispanic smokers.

A group of Hispanic and White non-Hispanic smokers were asked to report the stereotypes they hold of smokers in general. All respondents tended to think that smokers were Nervous, Friendly, and Sociable; although White non-Hispanics felt more certain than Hispanics that smokers were Friendly, Aggressive, Sociable, Attractive, and Feminine. Factor analyses of the responses showed three common (across ethnicity) factors: Sociability, Self-Presentation, and Nervousness. Only the Self-Presentation factor showed statistically significant differences between the two ethnic groups. The amount of ciga

Lightning streaks of Moore: a cause of recurrent stereotypic visual disturbance.

Lightning streaks of Moore are recurrent stereotypic vertical visual phenomena that must be distinguished from similar symptoms due to retinal ischemia, optic disk abnormalities, or mechanical retinal or optic nerve stimulation. These brief flashes are oriented vertically and are perceived in the temporal visual field after eye movement. Senescent posterior vitreous changes induce collapse and detachment with persistent vitreoretinal adhesions through which mechanical forces exert traction on the macula and retina, inducing photopsias. Clinical recognition of these symptoms avoids unnecessary

Using water mist to reduce self-injurious and stereotypic behavior.

A mist of water sprayed in the face was used as a punisher for stereotypic and self-injurious behaviors by a boy diagnosed as severely mentally retarded with autistic-like behaviors. The boy had a long history of mouthing and hand-biting behaviors. The latter behavior was evinced by noticeable scar tissue on the backs of his hands. The study took place in a self-contained public school classroom for autistic children and other children with severe communication disorders and functional mental retardation. An ABAB withdrawal design with no treatment probes demonstrated the rapid and dramatic su
