Acute gastric volvulus associated with congenital diaphragmatic hernia is an unusual surgical emergency. We describe a case of an 11-year-old girl who presented with a 4-day history of abdominal pain, nonproductive retching, cough, and shortness of breath. A chest radiograph revealed a large air-fluid level in left hemithorax and the presence of intestinal loops with marked mediastinal deviation. Nasogastric decompression was unsuccessful. Via a thoracoscopic approach, the large fluid-filled stomach was percutaneously decompressed but could not be reduced. Through a left subcostal incision, a

Gastric volvulus is an uncommon entity. Management is principally surgical. Diagnosis is often delayed because of the non-specific nature of the symptoms. The authors report two cases of gastric volvulus seen in a six month period. The first is an acute presentation diagnosed by computed tomography with incarceration and necrosis of the stomach, the transverse colon and great omentum. The issue was immediate laparotomy for total gastrectomy, colectomy, terminal colostomy and omentectomy. The patient survived, and the colostomy was closed and continuity restored three months later. The second o

Gastric volvulus is a potentially lethal condition. We report a case of esophageal hiatal hernia with strangulation of the esophagus and stomach caused by gastric volvulus. A 79-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital in a state of shock, and investigations showed necrotic changes in most of her distal esophagus and gastric body. Thus, we performed an emergency total gastrectomy and transhiatal esophagectomy, followed 3 months later by successful reconstruction of the esophagus using the jejunum. Occasionally, a large hiatal hernia accompanies gastric volvulus; however, the extent of esoph

A 95-year-old man was admitted to the hospital due to a sudden onset of nausea and abdominal pain. Physical examination revealed abdominal distension with mild epigastric tenderness. Computed tomography showed a grossly distended stomach with displacement of the antrum above the esophago-gastric junction, and he was diagnosed with acute mesentero-axial gastric volvulus. We attempted urgent reduction using conventional endoscopy, but failed. He and his family did not want surgery because of his extreme advanced age, and a nasogastric tube was inserted to his stomach for decompression expecting

Acute gastric volvulus is a rare condition complicating 4% of hiatus hernias. It is a more or less complete rotation of the stomach around a transverse or longitudinal axis. It can lead to perforations due to ischemic gastric wall necrosis with very poor prognosis (30% of mortality). We here report the case of an 89-year old female patient with chronic bronchopathy, presenting with epigastralgias associated with vomiting which had progressed for 03 days. Physical examination showed febrile patient at 38.5 with dyspnea (SpO2 88% at room air). Her appearence suggested infection, the abdomen was

BACKGROUND: Acute gastric volvulus is a rare, but potentially life-threatening, cause of upper gastrointestinal obstruction.
CLINICAL CASE: Male of 60 years old with severe epigastric pain and abdominal distension with haematemesis on two occasions. The patient was haemodynamically stable, with abdominal distension and palpable epigastric fullness. Hematic cytology showed: haemoglobin 8.2g/dl and haematocrit 27%. Abdominal X-ray showed an elevation of left diaphragm with a hugely dilated stomach. A nasogastric tube was inserted. Endoscopy was performed. There was no active bleeding, but it wa

A 36-year-old woman, who was 19 weeks pregnant presented with epigastric pain and a one-week history of repeated vomiting. Endoscopy revealed twisted stomach. CT scan of the chest showed figure of eight stomach consistent with gastric volvulus. Confirmation of diagnosis was made by laparatomy in which reduction of the oedematous stomach and excision of ischemic omental patch and repair of a huge paraesophageal hernia were performed. Two days after operation, abortion took place. Few days later, rapid deterioration in renal and hepatic function occurred followed by maternal death.

Gastric volvulus (GV) is rare in the pediatric age group. The presentation is varied, and surgery in the form of gastropexy is recommended. We examine the place of gastric fixation in the management of these patients. The authors retrospectively reviewed five cases of gastric volvulus treated at their institute and noted presenting symptoms and signs, studies performed, associated anomalies, surgery done, and outcome. All patients had associated diaphragmatic abnormalities. Two patients had acute volvulus; three had a chronic presentation. Chest X-ray and barium meal were diagnostic. All patie

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a commonly used, safe diagnostic modality for evaluation of epigastric pain and rarely its major complications include perforation, haemorrhage, dysrhythmias and death. Gastric volvulus has been reported to complicate percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy but its occurrence after diagnostic EGD has not yet been reported in literature. The successful management relies on prompt diagnosis and gastric untwisting, decompression and gastropexy or gastrectomy in full thickness necrosis of the stomach wall. A 38-year-old woman presented with epigastric pain and EGD s

AIM: We evaluated patients with gastric volvulus secondary to diaphragmatic pathology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight patients (5 males and 3 females) presented to the author in a tertiary care center during 1997-2006 were analyzed in terms of age, sex, symptomatology, diagnosis and predisposing factors.
OBSERVATIONS: Six had an acute presentation and rest had chronic symptomatology. The two patients who had total gangrene stomach died postoperatively and one patient died preoperatively due to aspiration. All the cases presented with acute symptoms had diaphragmatic pathology, and out of these

Acute gastric volvulus occurs when the stomach or a part of it rotates more than 180 degrees which leads to obstruction (closed loop syndrome), that finally concludes to incarceration and ischemia of the organ. It can be observed as a result of diaphragmatic hernia, a gap of the diaphragm, pancreatic or gastric cancers, traumatic injuries and fixation anomalies. Parï first described acute gastric volvulus in 1579, in a patient with diaphragmatic injury after trauma. The first reports of successful surgical repair and anatomo-pathologic findings were published in 1866 and 1897.

Gastric volvulus can be a medical emergency with life-threatening complications. Early surgical intervention is important to avoid potential ischemic complication that may lead to infarction of the stomach. The condition has been reported in children and in the elderly, but the majority of cases are reported in the fifth decade of life. We present a case of a complication arising from corrective laparoscopic surgery for gastric volvulus, whereby most of the small bowel herniated around the anterior laparoscopically performed gastropexy. The herniation was reduced during a laparotomy, and the s

INTRODUCTION: Gastric volvulus is an important cause of nonbilious emesis that must be recognized early to ensure a good outcome. We reviewed 7 cases from our institution, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (Egleston campus). In addition, we reviewed all gastric volvulus cases in children published to date in the English literature to draw general conclusions about the presentation and treatment of this unusual disease.
METHODS: An electronic literature search was performed to find all published cases of pediatric gastric volvulus. The care of all children from January 2002 to December 2007 who

A middle-aged man presented at 4:00 with tense distended abdomen, severe pain and numb legs. His medical background included poorly controlled insulin-dependent diabetes. Abdominal x-ray showed a massively distended, featureless viscus on the left side of the abdomen thought to be a sigmoid volvulus. CT scan was delayed due to respiratory compromise from diaphragmatic splinting. Nasogastric and flatus tube decompression were attempted. Eventually CT was obtained and provisionally reported as a sigmoid volvulus. Emergency laparotomy was performed due to the risk of impending perforation. Operat

Acute gastric volvulus is an extremely rare but possibly lethal condition within the pediatric population and is defined by the abnormal rotation of the stomach that can lead to serious complications like ischemia, perforation, or splenic involvement if not promptly diagnosed and managed. We report the case of a 2-year-old male with a history of Chromosome Alignment-Maintaining Phosphoprotein 1 (CHAMP1) mutation and prior gastric ulcers who presented with hematemesis, retching, and feeding intolerance. Abdominal radiograph showed nonspecific dilation of the gastric bubble, and contrast-enhance

Gastric volvulus is a rare condition in pediatric population in which there is an abnormal rotation of one part of the stomach around itself. It's a surgical emergency. We report a six year old female admitted in the emergency due to upper abdominal distention, nausea without vomiting, physical exam revealed upper abdominal distention and abdominal tenderness, no bowel sounds. Laparotomy was performed and a gastric volvulus with occlusive vascular involvement was found. In the post operative period she required a second laparotomy due to adhesions in small bowel.

UNLABELLED: Acute gastric volvulus is a rare complication affecting 4% of hiatal hernias. It is described as an abnormal rotation of the stomach around a transverse or longitudinal axis and can be intra-abdominal or intrathoracic. Intrathoracic gastric volvulus can lead to tension gastrothorax, which is defined as the presence of a massive gastric distension in the chest cavity causing a mediastinal shift with haemodynamic instability and a risk of cardiorespiratory arrest. We report a case of intrathoracic gastric volvulus with probable tension gastrothorax. Early diagnosis of gastrothorax wi

When performing endoscopic reduction in patients with gastric volvulus, it is important to maintain a low level of intragastric pressure and to fix the endoscope in the duodenum. Gel immersion endoscopy is a new method for securing the visual field by injecting clear gel. The balloon-attached endoscope makes it easier to fix the tip in the duodenum without mucosal damage. We report successful reduction of a mesenteroaxial gastric volvulus using an endoscope with a balloon in combination with gel immersion endoscopy. A 3-year-old Japanese male developed gastric volvulus. Since gastric decompres

Only 52 cases of gastric volvulus have been reported in children and infants. The pathophysiology of the condition relates to an abnormal rotation of the stomach. The authors report a case of an 11-month-old infant who presented with an 8-hour history of retching and obtundation. Abdominal distension and left upper-quadrant tenderness were the predominant physical findings. A diagnosis of mesenteroaxial gastric volvulus with eventration of the left hemidiaphram was made by means of plain-films and an upper gastrointestinal series. The child underwent laparotomy and gastrostomy, made a smooth r
