Electron microscopy of vesicular stomatitis virus replicative ribonucleoproteins.

The objective of this investigation was to examine by electron microscopy the replicative ribonucleoprotein (RNP) structures synthesized in vesicular stomatitis virus-infected HeLa cells. Pulse-labeled in vivo products of vesicular stomatitis virus replication and transcription can be separated by centrifugation in Renografin gradients. Transcription complexes are dissociated, allowing nascent messenger RNPs to remain at the top of the gradient, whereas RNPs biochemically consistent with replication complexes sediment to the middle of the gradient. Examination of these structures by electron m…

[Intraoral UV irradiation in gingivitis and ulcerative stomatitis].

The different specific and non-specific general effects of ultra-violet rays are discussed. Intro-oral ultra-violet irradiation is indicated in all ulcerous and ulcero-aphthous diseases of the gingiva and the remaining oral mucosa. The author's experience does not plead for other applications, e. g., in case of parodontopathia inflammata and parodontopathia dystrophica, which is sometimes recommedned. The technique of ultra-violet irradiation is described. It is emphasized that a stomatological nurse may give this treatment, which relieves the stomatologist

Nonspecific stomatitis-a presenting sign in pernicious anemia.

Recurrent nonspecific stomatitis may be an oral sign of pernicious anemia. Repeated examinations and blood studies are important when the cause of stomatitis is not clear on initial evaluation of a complaint of sore mouth. Three cases of pernicious anemia are presented to illustrate the similarities and differences in oral signs of pernicious anemia.

Stomatal aperture, VPD and transpiration - The chicken or the egg?

Stomata regulate gas exchange and water loss by closing in response to high vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Yet, it remains unclear whether stomata directly sense external conditions (e.g., relative humidity [RH] or temperature) or instead respond to internal changes associated with VPD (e.g., transpiration rate [E] or water status). Moreover, the stomatal response to VPD integrates both passive hydraulic and active metabolic mechanisms and involves inherent coupling between E and RH, which complicates our understanding of stomatal signal perception and response. In addition, recent findings cha

An exuberant case of uremic stomatitis in an older adult.

OBJECTIVE: To report the case of an older adult with uremic stomatitis. BACKGROUND: Uremic stomatitis is a rare condition, with only 57 cases documented in the literature. Gerodontologists may be unfamiliar with this condition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 71-year-old male patient, undergoing oncological treatment and with chronic kidney disease (CKD), presented with an asymptomatic, exuberant tongue lesion which had persisted for 3 months. The lesion was characterised by a white-yellowish plaque with a rough, warty surface covering the entire dorsum and lateral borders of the tongue. Blood test…

Efficacy of alum for treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common painful ulcers of oral mucosal which can cause many sufferings. Treatment of RAS often includes administration of corticosteroids, analgesics and regulators of the immune system. However, considering the side effects of these medications, even their topical application must be done with caution. Alum is used in traditional medicine for treatment of oral ulcers without significant side effect. This study sought to assess the effect of topical application of alum on aphthous ulcers. METHODS: This clinical randomized double-blind…

The Denture-Associated Oral Microbiome in Health and Stomatitis.

While investigation of the microbiome on natural oral surfaces has generated a wealth of information, few studies have examined the microbial communities colonizing dentures and their relationship to oral health. To address this knowledge gap, we characterized the bacterial community associated with dentures and remaining teeth in healthy individuals and patients with denture stomatitis. The microbiome compositions of matched denture and tooth plaque samples of 10 healthy individuals and 9 stomatitis patients were determined by 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing. The microbial communities colonizing…

Two cases of an atypical presentation of necrotizing stomatitis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this report was to describe the clinical and microbiological characteristics of two rare cases of necrotizing stomatitis, and the outcomes of a non-invasive treatment protocol applied in both cases. METHODS: We report two cases of necrotizing stomatitis in a rare location in the hard palate of a 40-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man. Neither had a relevant medical history and both presented with highly painful ulceration in the palate and gingival margin that was accompanied by suppuration and necrosis. 3% hydrogen peroxide was applied to the lesions using sterile sw…

Opportunistic microorganisms in individuals with lesions of denture stomatitis.

The aim of this study was to isolate, quantify, identify, and compare opportunistic microorganisms (Candida and Staphylococcus genera and Enterobacteriaceae/Pseudomonadaceae families) from prosthesis-fitting surfaces, the hard palate, and mouth rinses of individuals wearing removable maxillary prosthesis with (50) and without (50) lesions of denture stomatitis (DS). The strains were collected and identified using phenotypic, biochemical and molecular tests. The counts of microorganisms were significantly higher in the group of individuals with DS (P < 0.05). C. albicans was the most frequently…

The effect of ascorbate on minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

AIM: Minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis (MRAS) is a common, painful and inflammatory ailment of the oral cavity with juvenile onset and unknown aetiology. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of ascorbate (vitamin C) to reduce the frequency of MRAS and severity of pain. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixteen MRAS patients (9 boys and 7 girls: mean age, 12.0 +/- 2.4 years old) were assigned to take an oral dosage of 2000 mg/m(2)/day ascorbate. SUBJECTS: Their baseline frequency of outbreaks and the level of pains were compared during the treatment; in addition, a crossover clinical…

[Stomatitis, glossitis, and esophagitis in a patient treated with minocycline].

After 10 days of minocycline therapy, stomatitis, glossitis and esophagitis were seen in a 62-year-old male patient, who had previously tolerated minocycline for > 20 years without complications. This typical side effect of minocycline was initially misinterpreted in the differential diagnosis and was only diagnosed, when the patient was reexposed to a new 7-day minocycline therapy. Healing was achieved by termination of the minocycline therapy and the initiation of antimycotic treatment.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis in the diagnosis of Behçet's disease.

Recurrent aphthous stomatits (RAS) is also known as recurrent oral ulcers, recurrent aphthous ulcers, or simple or complex aphthosis. RAS is the most common inflammatory ulcerative condition of the oral mucosa in North American patients. RAS has been the subject of active investigation along multiple lines of research including epidemiology, immunology, clinical correlations and therapy. Clinical evaluation of the patient requires correct diagnosis of RAS and classification of the disease based on morphology (MIAU, MJAU, HU) and severity (simple versus complex). In order to properly diagnose a

[The use of hemosorption in treating severe forms of stomatitis].

Analyzes the results of hemoperfusion used in multiple-modality treatment of 33 patients with grave forms of stomatitis. Enumerates indications for such therapy, methods of homeostasis control, and for assessment of hemoperfusion efficacy. Reduction of treatment periods from 23.4 days in controls to 19.0 days in experimental group indicate a high efficacy of hemoperfusion in the treatment of grave stomatitis.
