Coinfection with malaria alters the fecundity and within-host persistence of an intestinal nematode.

Infections with soil transmitted helminths (STHs) are highly prevalent in humans living in the intertropical region. While, in most cases, STHs can establish chronic infections, the dynamics of the infection can be altered when other parasites exploit the same host. These changes can have consequences in terms of the health of the host, the epidemiology of the disease (e.g., the duration of the infection and the inter-host transmission success) and the fitness of the parasite. Here, we investigated if the coinfection with Plasmodium yoelii alters the dynamics (fecundity and with-host persisten

Ecoepidemiology of Angiostrongylus cantonensis in Mediterranean rats: spatial heterogeneity, low genetic diversity and precipitation-driven transmission.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a neurotropic zoonotic nematode that has recently expanded into Mediterranean Europe, with reports from Mallorca, Valencia, and Naples. On Mallorca, the parasite circulates in gastropods and wildlife, yet no autochthonous human cases have been reported to date. In this context, information on its dynamics in definitive hosts remains limited. We conducted a 2.5-year surveillance study of A. cantonensis in rats on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca (Spain), integrating spatial, host-related, ecological, climatic, seasonal, and genetic data. Using a volunteer-assi

Passage of Angiostrongylus cantonensis through the trophic web: an experimental study on reptiles.

The rat lungworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a zoonotic metastrongyloid nematode, currently considered an emerging pathogen approaching Europe. In tropics and subtropics, it is an important food-borne neurotropic parasite of medical and veterinary importance. Sources of infection for mammals and birds include gastropod intermediate hosts and poikilothermic vertebrates (paratenic hosts). To evaluate the relevance of reptiles in the rat lungworm circulation, we performed an experimental series focused on long-term survival of third stage larvae (L3) of A. cantonensis in reptiles and potential

Metabarcoding characterization of gastrointestinal strongyle nematodes in captive Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) and white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum) in a private zoo, Thailand.

Gastrointestinal strongyle nematodes pose significant health risks to captive megaherbivores, including Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) and white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum). Traditional diagnostic methods often fail to accurately identify species due to morphological similarities, limiting understanding of parasite diversity and host-specificity. This study is among the first in Southeast Asia to apply high-throughput internal transcribed spacer-2 (ITS-2) rDNA metabarcoding to characterize strongyle nematode communities in these endangered hosts. Fecal samples from six rhinoceroses a

Snail coprophagy: the encounter filter, food preferences, and rat lungworm (Angiostrongylus cantonensis) prevalence.

Understanding the factors driving infection prevalence among host species is crucial for effective disease mitigation. Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the rat lungworm, causes neuroangiostrongyliasis and serves as an excellent model for studying infection dynamics across hosts. This study investigates the relative impact of encounter rates on A. cantonensis prevalence in snail hosts by assessing their coprophagic tendencies. Multiple-choice feeding assays were conducted with four snail species (Parmarion martensi, Laevicaulis alte, Lissachatina fulica, and Veronicella cubensis) differing in A. ca

A systematic review and meta-analysis of impact of strongyle parasitism on growth rates in young cattle.

BACKGROUND: To identify any universal impact of strongyle parasite burden on the growth rate of young cattle. METHODS: A meta-analysis and meta-regression of the relationship between differences in strongyle parasite burden between cohorts and average daily weight gain was conducted. Publications were identified from a search of databases applying PRISMA 2020 principles. Eligible studies had at least two groups of growing cattle on the same farm that were identical in composition, management and diet except for parasite exposure and were subject to body weight gain or average daily gain and f

Case Report: Angiostrongylus cantonensis Infection Presenting as Small Fiber Neuropathy.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is an emerging parasite that is the most common cause of eosinophilic meningitis worldwide. Human infection typically presents with headache, neck stiffness, and paresthesia. We report a case of a woman with PCR positive A. cantonensis infection who presented with symptoms of small fiber neuropathy (SFN) but no headache. SFN was confirmed by skin biopsy. After failing standard medications for neuropathy, she was treated with intravenous lidocaine with considerable improvement. However, she required medications for 1 year to treat her chronic neuropathy. Infection by

Neuroangiostrongyliasis: Global Spread of an Emerging Tropical Disease.

Neuroangiostrongyliasis (NAS) is an emerging parasitic disease caused by the neurotropic nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis. Since it was first discovered, in rats in southern China in the 1930s, this tropical to subtropical parasite has spread to much of Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands (including Hawaii), Australia, Japan, South America, the southeastern United States, the Caribbean, Africa, the Canary Islands, and the Balearic Islands. The parasite completes its natural life cycle in snails and slugs (intermediate hosts), and rats (definitive hosts). Humans become accidental hosts afte

Epidemiological, clinical and laboratory aspects of Angiostrongylus cantonensis infection: an integrative review.

This integrative literature review study analyzes the findings of the last 5 years of the parasite Angiostrongylus cantonensis. It is known that this nematode is found in the pulmonary arteries of rats, where it remains as a definitive host. From mice, the cycle spreads to animals, such as snails, which in contact with humans can trigger the disease. In humans, the parasite causes several neurological, abdominal manifestations and mainly meningitis. Based on the review of studies, its epidemiology shows worldwide distribution, although there are endemic cases for this parasite, such as asian c

Biomphalaria glabrata infected with Angiostrongylus cantonensis: Proteomic changes in the snail host.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the main cause of human eosinophilic meningitis. Humans are accidental hosts, becoming infected due to ingestion of raw intermediate (snails and slugs) or paratenic hosts. Once ingested, the larvae migrate towards the brain where they die, causing the disease. To develop better mollusk control strategies, it is important to first understand what happens in the snail during infection, therefore our purpose was to characterize proteomic, metabolic and immunologic changes in Biomphalaria glabrata 24 h after infection with A. cantonensis. For this purpose, proteins w

The Fine-Scale Landscape of Immunity and Parasitism in a Wild Ungulate Population.

Spatial heterogeneity in susceptibility and exposure to parasites is a common source of confounding variation in disease ecology studies. However, it is not known whether spatial autocorrelation acts on immunity at small scales, within wild animal populations, and whether this predicts spatial patterns in infection. Here we used a well-mixed wild population of individually recognized red deer (Cervus elaphus) inhabiting a heterogeneous landscape to investigate fine-scale spatial patterns of immunity and parasitism. We noninvasively collected 842 fecal samples from 141 females with known rangin

First record of Halocercus sp. (Pseudaliidae) lungworm infections in two stranded neonatal orcas (Orcinus orca).

Orca (Orcinus orca) strandings are rare and post-mortem examinations on fresh individuals are scarce. Thus, little is known about their parasitological fauna, prevalence of infections, associated pathology and the impact on their health. During post-mortem examinations of two male neonatal orcas stranded in Germany and Norway, lungworm infections were found within the bronchi of both individuals. The nematodes were identified as Halocercus sp. (Pseudaliidae), which have been described in the respiratory tract of multiple odontocete species, but not yet in orcas. The life cycle and transmission

Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection leads to impaired reference memory and myeloid cell interference.

Hookworm infection is endemic in developing countries, leading to poor cognitive function-among other disruptions. In this study, the effects of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection (a murine model of Necator Americanus) on cognitive function were investigated. Though impaired cognition has been extensively reported, the exact domain of cognition affected is still unknown, hence requiring investigation. The objective of this study was to identify possible cognitive changes during Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection in mice, using the Morris water maze. Here, we show for the first time tha

Characterisation of the vascular pathology in Sigmodon hispidus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) following experimental infection with Angiostrongylus costaricensis (Nematoda: Metastrongylidae).

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus costaricensis is a nematode that causes human abdominal angiostrongyliasis, a disease found mainly in Latin American countries and particularly in Brazil and Costa Rica. Its life cycle involves exploitation of both invertebrate and vertebrate hosts. Its natural reservoir is a vertebrate host, the cotton rat Sigmodon hispidus. The adult worms live in the ileo-colic branches of the upper mesenteric artery of S. hispidus, causing periarteritis. However, there is a lack of data on the development of vasculitis in the course of infection. OBJECTIVE: To describe the hist

Helminths and immunological tolerance.

Current immunosuppression regimens for solid-organ transplantation have shown disappointing efficacy in the prevention of chronic allograft rejection and carry unacceptable risks including toxicity, neoplasia, and life-threatening infection. Achievement of immunological tolerance (long-term antigen unresponsiveness in an immunocompetent host) presents the exciting prospect of freedom from immunosuppression for transplant recipients. It is now 60 years since the first demonstration of immunological tolerance in animal models of transplantation, but translation into routine clinical practice rem

Abdominal angiostrongyliasis with involvement of liver histopathologically confirmed: a case report.

Human abdominal angiostrongyliasis is a zoonotic disease caused by ingestion of the L3 larvae of Angiostrongylus costaricensis. The human infection gives rise to a pathological condition characterized by acute abdominal pain, secondary to an inflammatory granulomatous reaction, marked eosinophilia and eosinophilic vasculitis. Most commonly this disease is limited to intestinal location, primary ileocecal, affecting the mesenteric arterial branches and intestinal walls. We present one of the few cases reported around the world with simultaneous involvement of the intestines and liver, including

Abdominal angiostrongyliasis caused by Angiostrongylus cantonensis: a possible cause of eosinophilic infiltration in human digestive tract.

We report the pathological findings of a serologically proven case of Angiostrongylus cantonensis presenting with localized peritonitis followed by eosinophilic meningoencephalitis. The neurological involvement developed 3 days after the occurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms. Similarly to the life cycle in rats, it takes about 2 or 3 days for the larvae to reach the nervous system. The pathological section of the sigmoid colon showed focal eosinophilic infiltration with serosal vessel invasion. In the case reported here, we describe a new possible cause of eosinophilic infiltration in the hu

Existence of Angiostrongylus cantonensis in rats (Rattus norvegicus) in Grenada, West Indies.

The zoonotic rat lung worm, Angiostrongylus cantonensis is endemic to Asia, North America, Africa and Australia. The parasite is expanding geographically and has recently been recorded in some of the Greater Antilles in the northern part of the Caribbean. In this study A. cantonensis is reported for the first time in the Lesser Antilles in one of the southernmost islands, Grenada. Between September 2005 and September 2006, 192 rats (Rattus norvegicus) were trapped throughout the island. The rats were anesthetized, exsanguinated, necropsied and the lungs were fixed whole in 10% buffered formali

Epidemiological study and risk factors of equine (Equus ferus caballus) gastrointestinal helminth infections in the north and northeast of Iran.

Understanding the epidemiology of gastrointestinal (GI) helminth infections in equines is critical for investigating drug resistance patterns and developing effective strategies to control and prevent these infections. There is a lack of data regarding horse GI helminths and risk factors in the north and northeast of Iran. Hence, the present study aimed to identify GI helminths in horses in these regions and determine their risk factors. A total of 340 fecal specimens from horses of north (n = 141) and northeast (n = 199) Iran were coprologically examined for GI helminth infections. The polyme
