PURPOSE: Proton pump inhibitors have failed to control symptoms in some patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease. We investigated the effect of alginate and sucralfate capsules (ALSUC) in patients who had not responded to proton pump inhibitors.

In a multi-centre placebo-controlled double-blind study, the therapeutic effectiveness of sucralfate (aluminium sucrose sulphate, four times 1 g daily) was tested on 66 out-patients with endoscopically confirmed reflux oesophagitis.
