An analytical procedure for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of human lens tissue for polyol and aldose content is described. Profile samples are obtained by direct derivatization of lyophilized lenses. The components are analyzed as per-O-acetylpolyols (from the polyols) and per-O-acetylaldononitriles (from the aldoses). This procedure converts each component into a single derivative and terminal dissymmetry for each aldose is retained. The derivatives form in quantitative yield, give good chromatographic peaks, are thermally stable and readily volatilized. They are not subject to ad

BACKGROUND: Sugar distribution regulation, especially in the roots, is an important pathway for plants to cope with abiotic stress. Sugar transport proteins (STPs) mediate the transmembrane transport of hexoses such as glucose and fructose; however, the molecular mechanism underlying the response to salt stress remains unclear.
RESULTS: Here, we identified 22 STP genes in apple (Malus domestica) using genome-wide screening. Under salt stress, 17 genes were detected in the roots of the apple rootstock Malus robusta Rehd; of them, MrSTP3, MrSTP7, MrSTP14, and MrSTP20 showed stronger positive re

Glutamatergic input via NMDA and AMPA receptors within the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) pathway plays a critical role in the development of addictive behavior and relapse toward drugs of abuse. Although well-established for drugs of abuse, it is not clear whether glutamate receptors within the mesolimbic system are involved in mediating chronic consumption and relapse following abstinence from a non-drug reward. Here, we evaluated the contribution of mesolimbic glutamate receptors in mediating chronic sugar consumption and the sugar-deprivation effect (SDE), which is used as a measure of relapse-l

BACKGROUND Recent discoveries in the field of immunometabolism, and on the role of the serine-threonine kinase mTOR as a sensor of nutrients, integrator of cellular signaling pathways, and regulator of metabolism, have widened our understanding of the connection between nutrition, health, and diseases. Epidemiological studies have shown that higher sugar-sweetened beverage consumption is associated with increased risk of developing chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, gout, and rheumatoid arthritis and to wors

Human brain contains multiple forms of aldehyde-reducing enzymes. One major form (AR3), as previously shown, has properties that indicate its identity with NADPH-dependent aldehyde reductase isolated from brain and other organs of various species; i.e., low molecular weight, use of NADPH as the preferred cofactor, and sensitivity to inhibition by barbiturates. A second form of aldehyde reductase ("SSA reductase") specifically reduces succinic semialdehyde (SSA) to produce gamma-hydroxybutyrate. This enzyme form has a higher molecular weight than AR3, and uses NADH as well as NADPH as cofactor.

Most commercially available red wines undergo alcoholic fermentation by Saccharomyces yeasts, followed by a second fermentation with the lactic acid bacteria Oenococcus oeni once the initial process is complete. However, this traditional approach can encounter complications in specific scenarios. These situations pose risks such as stalled alcoholic fermentation or the growth of undesirable bacteria while the process remains incomplete, leaving residual sugars in the wine. To address these challenges and the issue of low acidity prevalent in warmer viticultural regions, several novel alternati

BACKGROUND: The effects of pomegranate juice (PJ) on the risk factors of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)/non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) have been reported previously; however, the effects on NAFLD and its prevention have not yet been clarified. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of PJ consumption with respect to the prevention of NAFLD/NASH development. Sprague-Dawley rats were fed either a high-fat, high sugar diet (model group); a high-fat, high sugar diet plus PJ (model+PJ); or a chow diet ad libitum for 7 weeks. Visible-wavelength Raman spectroscopy was used to investigate the uptake and metabolism of the five-carbon sugar alcohol xylitol by Gram-positive viridans group streptococcus and the two extensively used strains of Gram-negative Escherichia coli, E. coli C and E. coli K-12. E. coli C, but not E. coli K-12, contains a complete xylitol operon, and the viridans group streptococcus contains an incomplete xylitol operon used to metabolize the xylitol. Raman spectra from xylitol-exposed viridans group streptococcus exhibited significant changes that persisted even in progeny grown from the xylitol-e

The growing consumer demand for low-sugar and low-alcohol beverages has spurred increased research into flavor-enhancement strategies. This study systematically investigated the sweet taste enhancement effect of low-concentration ethanol (4%) using a combined approach of T1R2/T1R3-expressing HEK293 cellular models and computational simulations. The fluorescence change ratio (ΔF/F0) was measured to quantify cellular response to sweeteners and assess perceived sweetness intensity. The observation of a classic dose-dependent response to sucrose confirmed the functionality and reliability of the c

OBJECTIVE: Dietary intake has long been looked upon as a potentially modifiable risk factor for gallbladder disease (GBD), here defined as either having gallstones or having had surgery for gallstones. This paper reviews the epidemiological evidence for an association between dietary intake and GBD, focusing on six dietary factors that have received the most attention in studies in this area: energy intake, fatty acids, cholesterol, carbohydrates and fibre, calcium and alcohol. The objectives of this review are to evaluate the potential usefulness of altering the diet to prevent GBD and to con

BACKGROUND: High efficiency in terms of reaction yield and purity has led to the extensive utilization of copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) in various fields of chemistry. Its compatibility with low molecular weight alcohols promotes the application in surfactant synthesis to tackle the miscibility constraints of the reactants.
OBJECTIVE: For the tuning of surfactant properties, double click coupling of the antipode precursors was attempted. Failure of the CuAAC to provide the targeted product in combination with unexpected reaction outputs led to an investigation of the sid

Increased blood sugar levels may influence the refractive power of the lens in juvenile diabetics, and can lead to the rare true diabetic cataract ("snow-storm cataract"). Surplus glucose induces accumulation of the sugar alcohol within the cells, thus generating disturbances of the osmotic balance and finally causing cataract. The enzyme aldose reductase catalyzes the formation of sorbitol. Experiments with animals have shown that aldose reductase inhibitors can prevent the formation of such opacities with streptozotocin-induced diabetes in rats. Numerous aldose reductase inhibitors are now k

Glycerophosphodiester phosphodiesterases (GDPDs) enzymes are known to be involved in phospholipids degradation pathways, where glycerophosphodiesters are hydrolyzed to glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P) and corresponding alcohol. In plants, GDPDs are involved in phosphate deficiency adaptive responses and have been shown to impact root length, but the precise mechanism remains unclear. This study focuses on the rice GDPD5 gene and its role in regulating primary root growth. Our research demonstrates that OsGDPD5 encodes a functional GDPD enzyme and could hydrolyze glycerophosphocholine and glycerophos
