Rates of iron(III) reduction coupled to elemental sulfur or tetrathionate oxidation by acidophilic microorganisms and detection of sulfur intermediates.

Bioleaching processes and acid mine drainage (AMD) generation are mainly driven by aerobic microbial iron(II) and inorganic sulfur/compound oxidation. Dissimilatory iron(III) reduction coupled to sulfur/compound oxidation (DIRSO) by acidophilic microorganisms has been described for anaerobic cultures, but iron reduction was observed under aerobic conditions as well. Aim of this study was to explore reaction rates and mechanisms of this process. Cell-specific iron(III) reduction rates for different Acidithiobacillus (At.) strains during batch culture growth or stationary phase with iron(III) (∼…

Mechanism of sulfur-oxidizing inoculants and nitrate on regulating sulfur functional genes and bacterial community at the thermophilic compost stage.

The emission of H2S odors predominantly occurred at the thermophilic phase of composting, which could cause odorous gas pollution and reduce the fertilizer value of composting products. And sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) possess oxidative capacities for inorganic sulfur compounds with nitrate applied as electron acceptors. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effectiveness of combined additives (SOB inoculants and nitrate) on the bacterial community diversity, sulfur-oxidizing gene abundances, and metabolic function prediction at the thermophilic stage of sewage sludge composting. The hi…

The current state of environmental pollution with sulfur dioxide (SO2) in Poland based on sulfur concentration in Scots pine needles.

The current air pollution by SO2 due to anthropogenic pressure in Poland was assessed based on sulfur concentrations in pine needles (Pinus sylvestris L.). On 308 monitoring sample plots located in pine stands distributed across Poland, measurements were conducted in mineral soil layers (0-10 cm, 10-40 cm, 40-100 cm) and in the soil organic layer (+5-0 cm). Samples of Scots pine foliage (current-year needles) were then collected, and the sulfur concentration in these needles was determined. Based on these data, a map of the spatial variability of sulfur concentrations in pine needles was drawn…

Triple sulfur-oxygen-strontium isotopes probabilistic geographic assignment of archaeological remains using a novel sulfur isoscape of western Europe.

Sulfur isotope composition of organic tissues is a commonly used tool for gathering information about provenance and diet in archaeology and paleoecology. However, the lack of maps predicting sulfur isotope variations on the landscape limits the possibility to use this isotopic system in quantitative geographic assignments. We compiled a database of 2,680 sulfur isotope analyses in the collagen of archaeological human and animal teeth from 221 individual locations across Western Europe. We used this isotopic compilation and remote sensing data to apply a multivariate machine-learning regressio…

Relating summer ambient particulate sulfur, sulfur dioxide, and light scattering to gaseous tracer emissions from the MOHAVE Power Project.

Project MOHAVE was initiated in 1992 to examine the role of emissions from the 1580 MW coal-fired MOHAVE Power Project (MPP) on haze at the Grand Canyon National Park (GCNP), located about 130 km north-north-east of the power plant. Statistical relationships were analyzed between summertime ambient concentrations of a gaseous perfluorocarbon tracer released from MPP and ambient SO2, particulate sulfur, and light scattering to evaluate whether MPP's emissions could be transported to the GCNP and then impact haze levels there. Spatial analyses indicated that particulate sulfur levels were strong…

Simultaneous Sulfur Black 1 dye removal and Na2S recovery via a sulfur-circular process: Advancing closed-loop textile wastewater treatment.

Sulfur Black 1 (SB1) is a widely used dye in the textile industry. Its dyeing process generates significant amounts of wastewater containing high-molecular-weight, refractory, and toxic organic pollutants, along with sulfate. This study proposed a novel sulfur-circular process integrating persulfate-based advanced oxidation process (AOP), microbial sulfate reduction, and gas stripping-adsorption to simultaneously remove SB1 and recover sodium sulfide (Na2S) from dyeing wastewater. In a 542-day trial, persulfate activation by zero-valent iron particles generated sulfate radicals (SO4•-) and hyd…

Protective mechanisms of sulfur against arsenic phytotoxicity in Brassica napus by regulating thiol biosynthesis, sulfur-assimilation, photosynthesis, and antioxidant response.

The contamination of agricultural soils with Arsenic (As) is a significant environmental stress that restricts plant growth, metabolism, and productivity worldwide. The present study examined the role of elemental sulfur (S0) in protecting Brassica napus plants from Arsenic (As) toxicity. Arsenic (100, and 200 mg As kg-1 soil) in soil caused detrimental effects on five Brassica napus cultivars (Neelam, Teri-Uttam Jawahar, Him Sarson, GSC-101, and NUDB 26-11). The As toxicity inhibited the growth and photosynthesis indices in all cultivars with more deterioration effects in NUDB 26-11. Plant ab…

Direct detection of the sulfur trioxide radical anion during the horseradish peroxidase-hydrogen peroxide oxidation of sulfite (aqueous sulfur dioxide).

The ESR spectrum of SO3- is observed directly during the oxidation of (bi)sulfite to sulfate by horseradish peroxidase. This radical exhibits a single line at g = 2.0031. The SO3-radical can be trapped with nitrosobenzene, yielding an ESR spectrum with coupling constants AN = 12.3 G,AHp = AHo = 2.4 G, and AHm = 0.9 G, and a g-value of 2.0053. SO3- is an intermediate in the two-step reduction of peroxidase Compound I by (bi)sulfite at physiological pH. At low pH, no SO3- is observed, which indicates a direct, one-step, two-electron reduction of Compound I. The pH at which the mechanism changes

Simultaneous cyanide detoxification and sulfur immobilization in low-sulfur cyanide tailings via sustainable oxidation roasting: process optimization and mechanistic insights.

This study presents a novel, cleaner oxidation roasting technology for the harmless treatment of low-sulfur cyanide tailings, enabling simultaneous cyanide detoxification and sulfur immobilization. Following systematic process optimization, the total cyanide concentration in the roasted products was reduced below the detection limit (<0.04 mg/kg), and the S immobilization rate reached 82.22%. Addition of CaO as a fixation agent further increased the S immobilization rate to 98.78%, effectively minimizing SO2 emissions. The underlying mechanisms of cyanide detoxification and synchronous sulfur …

Phosphorus accelerate the sulfur cycle by promoting the release of malodorous volatile organic sulfur compounds from Microcystis in freshwater lakes.

Volatile organic sulfur compounds (VSCs) released by algae are of great significance in sulfur cycle, climate regulation and biological information transmission, and they also caused taste and odor in freshwaters. However, the categories, sources, and environmental regulatory factors of VSCs in freshwaters were less known. Here, we show that eight common freshwater cyanobacterium Microcystis, which bloom in freshwaters over the world, are found to be important producers of VSCs. Dimethyl sulfide (DMS), dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and isopropyl methyl sulfide (IPMS) are the main VSCs with the hig…

DABCO-bis(sulfur dioxide), DABSO, as a convenient source of sulfur dioxide for organic synthesis: utility in sulfonamide and sulfamide preparation.

The charge-transfer complex generated from the combination of DABCO and sulfur dioxide, DABSO, is a bench-stable colorless solid suitable for use in organic synthesis as a replacement for gaseous sulfur dioxide. The complex can be combined with Grignard reagents to form sulfinates, which can then be converted in situ to a series of sulfonamides. Alternatively, reaction with anilines and iodine leads to the formation of a series of sulfamides. Cheletropic addition between DABSO and 2,3-dimethylbutadiene provides the corresponding sulfolene.

Biochemistry and transcriptional regulation of bacterial sulfur oxidation.

Sulfur is one of the most important and versatile elements in biology and forms the basis of energy metabolism in many prokaryotes. Its extensive large-scale redox transformations drive the global biogeochemical sulfur cycle and profoundly influence environmental chemistry. In dissimilatory sulfur oxidizers, the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds is directly coupled to energy conservation via photosynthetic or respiratory electron transport chains. Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and archaea are remarkably diverse, reflecting both the wide range of habitats they inhabit and the variety of metabol…

Electronic quenching of sulfur induced by argon collisions.

An accurate potential energy model, explicitly designed for studying scattering and treating the spin-orbit and nonadiabatic couplings on an equal footing, is proposed for the S + Ar system. The model is based on the Effective Relativistic Coupling by Asymptotic Representation (ERCAR) approach, building the geometry dependence of the spin-orbit interaction via a diabatisation scheme. The resulting full diabatic model is used in close-coupling calculations to compute inelastic scattering cross sections for de-excitation from the S(1D2) fine structure level into the 3P multiplet. The energy grid
