Feline mandibular fractures: a significant surgical challenge.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Mandibular fractures occur commonly in cats and appropriate treatment is vital to ensure restoration of dental occlusion and masticatory function. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Historically, a relatively high complication rate has been reported in association with mandibular fracture repair, and these complications can represent a significant challenge for the veterinary surgeon. AUDIENCE: General practitioners as well as specialists in small animal surgery are presented with fractures of the mandible on a regular basis. PATIENT GROUP: Cats of all ages can suffer mandibular frac

Is Pseudomonas aeruginosa a possible aetiological agent of periodontitis in dogs?

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal diseases are the most frequently diagnosed problem in small animal veterinary medicine. Although their exact cause is not fully understood, bacteria play an important role in their development. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterium. The living environment of this bacterium may be soil and water; however, it can also be found in humans and animals. Antibiotic treatment of periodontitis may be complicated by the carbapenem resistance of some P. aeruginosa strains, if these bacteria are found to be an aetiological agent. The a

Evaluation for Postoperative Infections Following Cutaneous Punch Biopsies in Dogs and Cats: 154 Cases (2013-2018).

Antimicrobial stewardship is becoming more important every day with increasing bacterial resistance and limitations on antibiotics. Prophylactic antibiotics are not necessary with all procedures, which has been shown previously with a variety of human and veterinary surgeries. Medical records were retrospectively evaluated for cases who had a cutaneous punch biopsy performed between 2013 and 2018 including the following information: species, signalment, concurrent diseases, concurrent medications, location of biopsy, histopathologic diagnosis, and bacterial infections postoperatively. The prev

Nasal Colonization of Antimicrobial-Resistant and Biofilm-Producing Staphylococcus spp. in Surgical Canine Patients From Italy.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus spp. commonly colonise the skin and mucosal surfaces of dogs and may act as opportunistic pathogens under favourable conditions. Antimicrobial resistance and biofilm formation are key traits that may contribute to bacterial persistence and reduced susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterise the antimicrobial resistance profiles and biofilm-forming ability of Staphylococcus spp. isolated from the nasal cavities of dogs admitted to the Surgical Unit of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Naples, Italy. METHODS: Nasal swabs wer

Small-intestinal volvulus in cattle: 35 cases (1967-1992).

Medical records of 35 cattle with small-intestinal volvulus were reviewed. Surgical correction was performed on 32 cattle, and 17 of these cattle were discharged from the hospital. Mean duration of clinical signs for survivors was not significantly different from that for nonsurvivors, and the most commonly recorded clinical signs were abdominal pain, anorexia, lethargy, abdominal distention, and dehydration. Physical examination of cattle with intestinal volvulus revealed tachycardia, tachypnea, and normothermia. Rectal examination findings included distended small intestine, scant feces or m

Viscoelastic materials in veterinary ophthalmology.

Viscoelastic materials have applications in both human and veterinary ophthalmology and orthopedics and for humans in otorhinolaryngology, urinary incontinence, cosmetic surgery and cosmetics. In ophthalmology, viscoelasties are most commonly used in facilitating cataract and other anterior segment surgeries, but also have applications in posterior segment surgery and in the topical management of keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Viscoelastics are routinely used during anterior segment surgery in filling and maintaining the anterior chamber, repositioning the iris, and to coat and protect the cornea

Complications associated with administration of detomidine into the caudal epidural space in a horse.

A 364-kg (800-lb) 15-month-old sexually intact cryptorchid male Quarter Horse was admitted to the veterinary teaching hospital for castration. The horse was placed in standing stocks, and a caudal epidural injection of 18 mg of detomidine hydrochloride (50 micrograms/kg [23 micrograms/lb] of body weight) was administered. Fifteen minutes after injection, the horse unexpectedly collapsed to the floor, first into sternal, and then into lateral, recumbency. Because the horse would not get up, the decision was made to perform the surgery with the horse under general anesthesia. The horse required

The development of a novel virtual reality simulation module for canine laparoscopic ovariectomy.

Canine ovariectomy is a commonly performed procedure in veterinary practice and can be done via an open celiotomy or a laparoscopic approach. Laparoscopy requires different psychomotor skills from those involved in open surgery. Many of these basic skills can initially be acquired through simulation-based training. Surgical simulation training benefits both the surgeon and the patient by offering the acquisition of new skills in a less stressful environment while lowering the risk for the patient. Virtual reality (VR) simulation training is well established in human medicine, but no VR modules

Acupuncture for the treatment of thoracolumbar and cervical disc disease in the dog.

Thoracolumbar disc disease (TLDD) and cervical disc disease (CDD) occur quite regularly in veterinary small animal practice, occurring predominantly in chondrodystrophic breeds and mostly around the age of 5-6 years. CDD is responsible for +/- 15% and TLDD for +/- 85% of disc herniations. Treatments may consist of surgery or medication or both. Acupuncture can also be used as a treatment for TLDD and CDD. With a few exceptions, the results of acupuncture treatment for TLDD and CDD are favorable and comparable to those of surgical treatments. The acupuncture techniques presented here are relati

Complete laparoscopic excision of a hepatic cyst and omentopexy in a Persian cat.

CASE SUMMARY: Congenital or acquired hepatic cystic lesions in cats are a rare condition. Congenital hepatic cysts are often present as part of a systemic polycystic disease involving several organs. Most cats with hepatic cysts remain clinically normal for their lives, although some patients may show abdominal distension, vomiting, abdominal pain and jaundice. An 11-year-old female neutered Persian cat was presented to our institution 3 days after the onset of inappropriate defecation and urination. This patient had a history of polycystic kidney disease and a small hepatic cystic lesion. Phy

Review on the Clinical, Imaging, and Therapeutic Aspects of Cardiac Masses in Dog.

Cardiac tumors in dogs, although rare in the past, have shown an increasing incidence due to advances in veterinary imaging, especially echocardiography, CT, and MRI with contrast agents. Right atrial hemangiosarcoma is the most common form of tumor associated with pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade, followed by chemodectoma, which is more common in brachycephalic breeds. The diagnosis is based on echocardiographic examination, supplemented by advanced methods and possibly biopsy. Clinical signs are often non-specific, requiring an integrated approach. Treatment includes pericardiocent

Left lateral and left middle liver lobe torsion in a Saint Bernard puppy.

A 5-month-old, male Saint Bernard was presented for acute collapse and abdominal discomfort. Significant findings were a cranial abdominal mass, hemorrhagic abdominal effusion, anemia, and disseminated intravascular coagulation. An exploratory surgery revealed torsion of both the left lateral and middle liver lobes, a condition that has not been previously described in the veterinary literature. Torsion of one or more hepatic lobes is a rare condition but should be considered as a differential diagnosis for acute abdomen syndrome in both young and mature dogs. Early diagnosis and prompt surgic

Identification of spayed and neutered cats and dogs: Veterinary training and compliance with practice guidelines.

Spay/neuter identification tattoos and ear-tipping are simple and cost-effective methods to minimize the likelihood of unnecessary anesthesia and surgery in companion animals or the misidentification of sexually intact animals. This study assessed training of sterilization identifiers in US and Canadian veterinary schools and practitioner compliance with guidelines for identifiers via surveys conducted in 2019. Faculty in all 34 schools responded to the survey, reporting that curricula included sterilization identifiers in 31% of lecture-based training, 75% of spay/neuter laboratory-based trai

Later-age neutering causes lower risk of early-onset urinary incontinence than early neutering-a VetCompass target trial emulation study.

There is growing evidence supporting clinically important associations between age at neutering in bitches and subsequent urinary incontinence (UI), although much of this evidence to date is considered weak. Target trial emulation is an innovative approach in causal inference that has gained substantial attention in recent years, aiming to simulate a hypothetical randomised controlled trial by leveraging observational data. Using anonymised veterinary clinical data from the VetCompass Programme, this study applied the target trial emulation framework to determine whether later-age neutering (≥

Development and Formative Evaluation of a Low-Fidelity Equine Castration Model for Veterinary Education.

Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) are units of activity that early-stage professionals perform in the workplace that necessitate simultaneous integration of multiple competencies. EPA #6 requires students to perform a common surgical procedure on a stable patient, including pre-operative and post-operative management. Castration is one of the most common surgeries performed by equine primary care practitioners and is considered an "entry-level competency" for veterinary graduates entering equine private practice, however, to our knowledge there are no equine castration models availabl

Successful phage-antibiotic therapy of P. aeruginosa implant-associated infection in a Siamese cat.

Antibiotic-resistant pathogens are a growing global issue, leading to untreatable infectious diseases in both humans and animals. Personalized bacteriophage (phage) therapy, the use of specific anti-bacterial viruses, is currently a leading approach to combat antibiotic-resistant infections. The implementation of phage therapy has primarily been focused on humans, almost neglecting the impact of such infections on the health and welfare of companion animals. Pets also have the potential to spread resistant infections to their owners or the veterinary staff through zoonotic transmission. Here,
