Epidemiology and some prognostic factors in osteosarcoma in Sweden.

Since 1958, there are about 80 cases of primary malignant bone tumours registered each year to the Central Cancer Registry. During the first 10 years, that is 1958--1968, 242 cases of osteosarcoma were registered (28.8% of all bone tumours--22.9% for chondrosarcoma) the incidence should be calculated at 2-3 cases per 1 million a year. The distribution according to age and sex is the same as found in most western countries. In a group of osteosarcoma patients, Dr Broström could study the longitudinal growth from birth until the age of diagnosis and relationship with tooth eruption. It was found

Incidence and survival curves of cystic fibrosis in Sweden.

A registry of all patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) in Sweden has been kept since 1968. During the 10-year period 1968-1977 the number of CF patients in Sweden increased by about 8-9 per year, i.e. from 116 to 200, the median age of patients increased from 5 to 11 years, the percentage of patients above 18 years of age increased from 3 to 9 of the total CF population, and the median survival age increased from 7.5 to 16 years. For CF patients born without meconium ileus the median survival age in 1973-1977 was 17.8 years. From these figures the incidence of CF in Sweden is estimated to be 1 :…

Babesia motasi in sheep on the island of Gotland in Sweden.

Serological survey with an IFA-test showed that 58% (73/125) of the lambs and 88% (46/52) of the ewes on the island of Gotland (Sweden) has antibodies against Babesia motasi. It is likely that such a high incidence of the blood protozoan organisms plays an important part in causing the often observed anaemia in sheep on that island.

Overprescribing iron tablets to elderly people in Sweden.

Iron should not be prescribed to middle-aged men or older women with anaemia unless the possibility that the iron deficiency is caused by a … iron prescription could be found in the record. Thus it is concluded that iron is overprescribed in Sweden, particularly for elderly people. It should not be prescribed until the possibility of a bleeding gastrointestinal tumour has been excluded.

Congenital dislocation of the hip joint in northern Sweden.

The incidence of neonatally diagnosed congeital dislocation of the hip joint (CDH) was found to vary between three hospitals in Northern Seden. The incidence was 10.0, 7.1 and 3.5 per thousand in hospitals A, B and C, repectively. The incidence increased during the period 1960-73 in hospitals A and B, but not in hospital C. At these hospitals the number of cases needing prolonged orthopaedic treatment showed an inverse relationship to the incidence of neonatally diagnosed CDH.

The status of infant mortality in Sweden and the United States.

A study was made of live birth rates, infant, neonatal, and postneonatal death rates, late fetal death ratios, and perinatal death ratios for Sweden and the United States for selected years, 1950-1973. Sweden has lower live birth rates, infant, neonatal, and postneonatal death rates, as well as lower perinatal death ratios. Data available on low-birth-weight live births for selected years, 1959-1970, for both countries indicated that rates in the United States were almost twice those in Sweden. Implications of these findings for the United States are discussed in light of the quantity, quality…

Prevalence of echinococcosis in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) in Sweden.

In Sweden echinococcosis is uncommon in domestic animals. In reindeer in the most northern part of the country echinococcosis was found. Of 1453 pairs of lungs, 23 pairs (1.6 %) were infected with hydatid cysts. These were of two types: typical well-developed hydatid cysts, which were found in nine of the 23 infected lungs, and collapsed hydatid cysts, which were found in 13 of the lungs. In only one lung pair both types of cysts were seen.

Congenital heart defects: familial recurrence patterns in Sweden.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Congenital heart defects (CHD) aggregate in families, but recurrence patterns across kinships and generations remain incompletely understood. In light of improved survival and diagnostic precision, updated population-based estimates are needed. This study aimed to investigate familial recurrence patterns of CHD among relatives using nationwide Swedish register data. METHODS: A retrospective, population-based case-control study was conducted, including 51 778 individuals with CHD born between 1987 and 2017 and 522 543 matched controls. Relatives (parents, full siblings, ha

Media coverage and pandemic behavior: Evidence from Sweden.

We study the effect of media coverage on individual behavior during a public health crisis. For this purpose, we collect a unique dataset of 200,000 newspaper articles about the Covid-19 pandemic from Sweden-one of the few countries that did not impose lockdowns or curfews. We show that mentions of Covid-19 significantly lowered the number of visits to workplaces and retail and recreation areas, while increasing the duration of stays in residential locations. Using two different identification strategies, we show that these effects are causal. The impacts are largest when Covid-19 news stories…

Characterization of Pipistrellus pygmaeus Bat Virome from Sweden.

Increasing amounts of data indicate that bats harbor a higher viral diversity relative to other mammalian orders, and they have been recognized as potential reservoirs for pathogenic viruses, such as the Hendra, Nipah, Marburg, and SARS-CoV viruses. Here, we present the first viral metagenomic analysis of Pipistrellus pygmaeus from Uppsala, Sweden. Total RNA was extracted from the saliva and feces of individual bats and analyzed using Illumina sequencing. The results identified sequences related to 51 different viral families, including vertebrate, invertebrate, and plant viruses. These viral …

Heat Wave-Associated Vibriosis, Sweden and Finland, 2014.

During summer 2014, a total of 89 Vibrio infections were reported in Sweden and Finland, substantially more yearly infections than previously have been reported in northern Europe. Infections were spread across most coastal counties of Sweden and Finland, but unusually, numerous infections were reported in subarctic regions; cases were reported as far north as 65°N, ≈100 miles (160 km) from the Arctic Circle. Most infections were caused by non-O1/O139 V. cholerae (70 cases, corresponding to 77% of the total, all strains were negative for the cholera toxin gene). An extreme heat wave in norther…

Photoallergic contact dermatitis from ketoprofen in southern Sweden.

The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ketoprofen is widely used for topical treatment. In Sweden, ketoprofen has been available for topical application since 1995. Photoallergic contact dermatitis from ketoprofen-containing topical preparations usually includes severe eczematous reactions. Ketoprofen is derived from propionic acid, and it is also a substituted benzophenone and therefore structurally similar to fenofibrate and sunscreen agents based on benzophenones. During the last 2 years, 35 patients have been refereed to our department with suspected photoallergic or allergic reactions a…

Mental health among Sweden Finns: A systematic scoping review.

Sweden Finns are one of five officially recognized national minority groups in Sweden. As a group, Sweden Finns have been socioeconomically underprivileged in comparison with the Swedish majority population, and tend to be worse off in terms of somatic health. However, the literature on mental health among Sweden Finns has not previously been systematically appraised. The aim of this scoping review was to synthesize the available evidence on mental health among Sweden Finns or, when the minority terminology is not used in the literature, among individuals in Sweden with a Finnish background (i…
