Divergent cytokine response following maximum progressive swimming in hot water.

Exercise promotes transitory alterations in cytokine secretion, and these changes are affected by exercise duration and intensity. Considering that exercise responses also are affected by environmental factors, the goal of the present study was to investigate the effect of water temperature on the cytokine response to maximum swimming. Swiss mice performed a maximum progressive swimming exercise at 31 or 38°C, and plasma cytokine levels were evaluated immediately or 1, 6 or 24 h after exercise. The cytokine profile after swimming at 31°C was characterized by increased interleukin (IL)-6 and mo…

Swimming-induced pulmonary oedema--a hazard in intensive military training?

Swimming-Induced Pulmonary Oedema (SIPE) has been described in military combat swimmers in both the US and Israeli Navies. The pathophysiology is explained by the immersion in cold water, and its effects on central vascular volume. SIPE has been hypothesized to be caused by pulmonary capillary stress failure (PCSF) due to elevations in pulmonary capillary transmural pressure. This leads to mechanical impairment and leakage of blood cells and proteins from capillaries. Patients with SIPE can present with pronounced dyspnoea, cough, hypoxemia and profuse frothy haemoptysis. Physical examination …

Cryptosporidium infections associated with swimming pools--Dane County, Wisconsin, 1993.

In March and April 1993, an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis in Milwaukee resulted in diarrheal illness in an estimated 403,000 persons (1). Following that outbreak, testing for Cryptosporidium in persons with diarrhea increased substantially in some areas of Wisconsin; by August 1, 1993, three of six clinical laboratories in Dane County were testing routinely for Cryptosporidium as part of ova and parasite examinations. In late August 1993, the Madison Department of Public Health and the Dane County Public Health Division identified two clusters of persons with laboratory-confirmed Cryptosporidi

Chloroform in alveolar air of individuals attending indoor swimming pools.

Alveolar air samples were collected from 163 subjects at indoor swimming pools and from 77 nonexposed subjects. Chloroform was present in all samples collected from exposed subjects (median = 695.02 nmol/m3). It was found at very low levels in 53% of samples from nonexposed subjects. Alveolar air chloroform levels from people attending indoor swimming pools (mean value within each sampling session) were correlated with environmental air concentration (r = 0.907, p = .002). Analysis of variance showed that levels of chloroform in alveolar air depend on environmental air concentration, age, inte…

A swimming pool-associated outbreak of Cryptosporidiosis in British Columbia.

An outbreak of Cryptosporidiosis occurred over three months in a British Columbia community, peaking in December 1990. Results of the case-control study and illness surveys support the hypothesis that transmission occurred in a public children's pool at the local recreation centre. Analysis using lab-confirmed cases revealed a matched odds ratio of 4.5 [95% CI 0.97, 20.83], and using clinical cases an unmatched odds ratio of 12.8 [95% CI 3.68, 46.77], associated with swimming in the children's pool within two weeks prior to onset of illness. Other risk factors were not significant. Attack rate…

[Exposure to chloroform in persons frequenting an indoor swimming pool].

Exposure to chloroform (CHCl3) in indoor swimming pool swimmers. CHCl3 presence has been evidenced many times in water and air of indoor pools as a consequence of water chlorination with sodium hypochlorite or other chlorinated disinfectants. In previous studies CHCl3 in environmental air appeared at a high concentration within one meter over the surface of the water and was correlated to the number of swimmers inside the pool. CHCl3 has also been evidenced in blood serum samples of people present at the swimming pool, at different levels depending on: the concentration in the environmental ai…

Prior cold water swim stress alters immobility in the forced swim test and associated activation of serotonergic neurons in the rat dorsal raphe nucleus.

Prior adverse experience alters behavioral responses to subsequent stressors. For example, exposure to a brief swim increases immobility in a subsequent swim test 24h later. In order to determine if qualitative differences (e.g. 19°C versus 25°C) in an initial stressor (15-min swim) impact behavioral, physiological, and associated neural responses in a 5-min, 25°C swim test 24h later, rats were surgically implanted with biotelemetry devices 1 week prior to experimentation then randomly assigned to one of six conditions (Day 1 (15 min)/Day 2 (5 min)): (1) home cage (HC)/HC, (2) HC/25°C swim, (3

Loratadine disrupts cardiovascular and swim bladder development in zebrafish.

The widespread presence of antihistamines such as loratadine in aquatic environments poses emerging ecotoxicological concerns, yet their dev … rea (p < 0.0001). Behavioral assays revealed impaired locomotion, with decreased total distance and swimming speed (p < 0.001). Molecular analyses showed that loratadine significantly altered the expression of cardiac genes (acta1b, atp2a2a, gata4, hand2, tbx5a) and suppressed key regulators of swim bladder development (fgf10a, smo, gli2a, fzd2, fzd5, wnt2 …

Rehabilitation Technologies for Chronic Conditions: Will We Sink or Swim?

INTRODUCTION: Chronic conditions such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, vestibular disorders, chronic pain, arthritis, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and heart disease are leading causes of disability among middle-aged and older adults. While evidence-based treatment can optimize clinical outcomes, few people with chronic conditions engage in the recommended levels of exercise for clinical improvement and successful management of their condition. Rehabilitation technologies that can augment therapeutic care-i.e., exoskeletons, virt

Pharmacological characterization of the forced swim test in Drosophila melanogaster.

The forced swim test is commonly used as a preclinical screen of antidepressant medication efficacy in rats and mice. Neckameyer and Nieto-Romero (Stress 18:254-66, 2015) adopted the forced swim test for use with the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster and showed that behavior in this test is sensitive to several physiologically relevant stressors. However, whether this test might be sensitive to the effects of antidepressant medications or other compounds is unknown. In the current studies, we fed drugs to male and female flies that we expected to either decrease or increase the duration of imm

The Impact of Resistance Training on Swimming Performance: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The majority of propulsive forces in swimming are produced from the upper body, with strong correlations between upper body strength and sprint performance. There are significant gaps in the literature relating to the impact of resistance training on swimming performance, specifically the transfer to swimming performance. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this systematic literature review are to (1) explore the transfer of resistance-training modalities to swimming performance, and (2) examine the effects of resistance training on technical aspects of swimming. METHODS: Four online database…

Skating by: low energetic costs of swimming in a batoid fish.

We quantify the oxygen consumption rates and cost of transport (COT) of a benthic batoid fish, the little skate, Leucoraja erinacea, at three swimming speeds. We report that this species has the lowest mass-adjusted swimming metabolic rate measured for any elasmobranch; however, this species incurs a much higher COT at approximately five times the lowest values recorded for some teleosts. In addition, because skates lack a propulsive caudal fin and could not sustain steady swimming beyond a relatively low optimum speed of 1.25 body lengths s(-1), we propose that the locomotor efficiency of ben…

An outbreak of norovirus gastroenteritis at a swimming club--Vermont, 2004.

John Snow's historic investigation of a severe epidemic of cholera traced the cause of infection to a common water source. Today, 150 years later, waterborne diseases remain a public health problem, and similar investigations are used to identify the source of infection. On February 3, 2004, the Vermont Department of Health (VDH) was notified of an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis among children whose only common exposure was attendance at a swimming club the previous weekend (January 31-February 1). This report summarizes the results of an investigation conducted by VDH and CDC, which determ…
