1 In anaesthetized rats electrical stimulation of the intact cervical sympathetic nerve produced frequency-dependent lower eyelid contractions and tachycardia. 2 The tachycardia was caused by excitation of efferent fibres since it was equally evident in the pithed rat preparation, and the right nerve was more effective than the left. By contrast, no differences were seen between the responses to right and left vagal stimulation in either rats or rabbits. 3 Guanethidine inhibited both cardiac and eyelid responses, propranolol only the former and phentolamine only the latter, therby revealing th

Estrogen induces rapid and extensive degeneration of rodent uterine myometrial sympathetic innervation. To clarify the underlying mechanisms, we used explant cultures to assess whether estrogen affects the myometrium's ability to induce sympathetic neuritogenesis and the sympathetic neuron's ability to respond. Superior cervical ganglion explants from ovariectomized adult donors extended neurites when cultured alone in serum-free medium, and their numbers increased 2.3-fold in the presence of myometrial explants from ovariectomized adult rats. The myometrium's ability to induce neuritogenesis

Nearly 3% of the population has hyperhidrosis. Quality of life is affected, impacting on social relationships and professional activity, and social anxiety disorder can sometime develop. We review the definition and causes of hyperhidrosis and the clinical evaluation of patients. After describing the different clinical aspects of the condition, we discuss the medical and surgical treatments. Of such treatments currently available, particular mention is made of the use of botulinum toxin in some forms of hyperhidrosis as an intermediate option between the traditional treatments and surgery. We

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present work was to study the effect of long-term cyclosporine (CSA) administration on norepinephrine (NE) metabolism and adrenergic-evoked secretion in the rat submandibular gland (SMG).
METHODS: Dose-response curves to adrenergic agonists (methoxamine, isoproterenol, NE) were performed in control and CSA (10 and 30 mg/kg every 2 days for 1 month)-treated rats after SMG duct cannulation. In SMG tissue neuronal NE uptake, release, synthesis and endogenous content were determined. In addition phosphoinositide intracellular signaling was also investigated.
RESULTS: C

To investigate the effect of hypoxia on endogenous norepinephrine (NE) release from cardiac sympathetic nerve ending, we administered sodium cyanide (NaCN) for 30 min into the myocardial interstitial space through a dialysis probe and measured dialysate NE levels. During the NaCN perfusion, a marked and concentration-dependent increase in dialysate NE was observed. This cyanide-induced NE response was suppressed by pretreatment with despiramine (a membraneous NE transport inhibitor). Furthermore, the cyanide-induced NE response was suppressed by pretreatment with TMB-8 (intracellular Ca(2+) an

To test the contribution of sympathetic postganglionic neurons (SPGNs) to adrenergic excitation of cutaneous nociceptor activities in adjuvant-inflamed rats (AI rats), we studied the effects of norepinephrine (NE) in a group of sympathectomized AI rats. Sympathectomy was complete in 4-6 weeks by guanethidine (30-50 mg/kg). NE excited polymodal receptor units in the saphenous nerve at an incidence (25-30%) similar to that in AI rats, while CH-38083 blocked such excitation. These results show that alpha 2-adrenoceptors in SPGNs are not involved in the norepinephrine excitation of cutaneous nocic

The striking similarity of certain pain symptoms and neurologic changes in RSD and the findings of severe thoracic outlet and inlet syndrome were the reason why clinical diagnostic studies of this dystrophy were also completed by radiologic examinations of the vessel system. Surprisingly, more or less striking and differently configurated stenoses in the area of the subclavian vein, with a resulting impairment of the venous run-off, were found. Those findings have been documented in 20 of 21 patients with RSD since 1984 by functional venography and, in the meantime, they were confirmed intraop

Extracellular recordings were made from postganglionic branches or ganglion cells of the 9th or 10th ganglia of the paravertebral sympathetic chain of the bullfrog in vitro. Tetanic preganglionic stimulation, applied to nerve fibers between the 7th and 8th ganglia, elicited cholinergic (muscarinic) and non-cholinergic synaptic responses in nicotinized preparations. These were an early after-discharge (EAD) and a late after-discharge (LAD), respectively. Brief application (3-10 min) of catecholamines augmented the LAD and this augmentation continued for 90-120 min after catecholamine withdrawal

Three patients developed a postganglionic Horner syndrome during the course of an ipsilateral uncomplicated middle ear infection. The mechanism may be an effect on the middle ear caroticotympanic sympathetic plexus, for which there is considerable anatomic and physiologic evidence. Why Horner syndrome does not occur more often after middle ear infection is a mystery.

The kinetic properties of voltage-gated Na(+) currents in two groups of glandular postganglionic sympathetic neurons were assessed. The first group of neurons remained innervated by preganglionic axons until the day of current recordings, while the second--decentralized 4 weeks prior to recordings. An increase of maximum current amplitude and density was noted in decentralized neurons. Na(+) currents activated and time-dependently inactivated more slowly in decentralized than in control neurons. Furthermore, after decentralization the currents steady-state inactivated at less hyperpolarized po

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether spinal interneurons play a role in the regulation of sympathetic activity in spinally intact rats. In acutely spinally transected rats, we have described a population of spinal interneurons that, by virtue of correlations between their ongoing firing rates and the magnitude of ongoing renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA), are candidates for generators of sympathetic activity. Further evidence for a sympathetic role for these neurons comes from our observation that cervical spinal stimulation that reduces RSNA also reduces their disch

An asynchronous firing or afterdischarge (AD) was recorded in vitro from the postganglionic internal carotid nerve of the rat superior cervical ganglion following repetitive stimulation of the preganglionic nerve when ganglion transmission was blocked by chlorisondamine, nicotine or hexamethonium, but was rarely observed in untreated ganglia. A stimulus frequency of at least 5 Hz was required to induce AD and as few as 100 pulses caused a significant response. The amplitude and duration of AD varied with the number of pulses. Low calcium solutions resulted in AD in the absence of ganglion bloc

A quantitative relationship between power densities of blood pressure (PBP) and sympathetic nerve activity (PSNA) in a low-frequency range (LF, 0.016-0.85 Hz), expressed as PSNA=PBPxax10bx(frequency) was proposed in pentobarbital-anesthetized rats. For evaluating the general applicability of this equation, the quantitative relationship of power density ratio Hf=PBP/PSNA across frequency was tested in a conscious state. Wistar rats were chronically instrumented with a femoral artery catheter and recording electrode around the renal sympathetic nerve. The blood pressure and renal sympathetic ner

The rat submandibular gland is innervated by both sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system which, in turn, regulate the secretory function of the gland. Parasympathetic innervation of rat submandibular glands is present at birth; in contrast, sympathetic innervation reaches the glands by postnatal day 5. Isoproterenol (IPR), a beta-adrenoreceptor agonist, induces hypertrophic and hyperplastic enlargement of rat salivary glands, and induces the expression of a number of genes, including cystatin S (Cys S), a member of family 2 of the cysteine proteinase inhibitor

Cholinergic innervation of hippocampus and cortex is required for some forms of learning and memory. Several reports have shown that activation of muscarinic m1 receptors induces a long-term depression (mLTD) at glutamate synapses in hippocampus and in several areas of cortex, including perirhinal and visual cortices. This plasticity likely contributes to cognitive function dependent upon the cholinergic system. In rodent models, degeneration of hippocampal cholinergic innervation following lesion of the medial septum stimulates sprouting of adrenergic sympathetic axons, originating from the s

To investigate the influence of the thoracic autonomic neuronal hierarchy on atrial arrhythmia formation, we compared the characteristics of atrial tachyarrhythmias induced by electrical stimulation of 1) the right vagosympathetic nerve complex at the cervical level and 2) the more caudal juxta-cardiac mediastinal nerves located on the anterior surface of the superior vena cava. Unipolar electrograms were recorded from 191 sites on the entire epicardial atrial surface and, in some experiments, from 63 right atrial endocardial sites. The sites of origin of initial beats at the onset of atrial t

Catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine) are synthesised and produced by the adrenal medulla and postganglionic nerve fibres of the sympathetic nervous system. It is known that essential hypertension has a significant neurogenic component, with the rise in blood pressure mediated at least in part by overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. Moreover, novel therapeutic strategies aimed at reducing sympathetic activity show promise in the treatment of hypertension. This article reviews recent advances within this rapidly changing field, particularly focusing on the role of genetic p

AIMS: To verify whether spectral components of atrial electrograms (AE) during sinus rhythm (SR) correlate with cardiac ganglionated plexus (GP) sites.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirteen patients undergoing atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation were prospectively enrolled. Prior to radio frequency application, endocardial AE were recorded with a sequential point-by-point approach. Electrical stimuli were delivered at 20 Hz, amplitude 100 V, and pulse width of 4 ms. A vagal response was defined as a high-frequency stimulation (HFS) evoked atrioventricular block or a prolongation of RR interval. Spectra
