Use of technologies in thyroid surgery: Latin American Thyroid Society Surgical Affairs Committee Expert Opinion. Part 1.

Thyroidectomyis the most frequent endocrine surgical treatment for problems such as goiter, thyroid cancer, and Graves' disease. The global incidence of goiter ranges from 5%-20%, with a notably high frequency in less wealthy countries, and the incidence of thyroid cancer is on the rise due to the greater use of diagnostic imaging. Despite medical options, surgery remains essential. Surgical advancements such as blood vessel sealing technology, intraoperative laryngeal nerve neuromonitoring (IONM), remote access surgery, and parathyroid fluorescence have transformed thyroid surgery. Feasibility of in-home monitoring for people with glaucoma: the I-TRAC mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a chronic disease of the optic nerve and a leading cause of severe visual loss in the UK. Once patients have been diagnosed, they need regular monitoring at hospital eye services. Recent advances in technology mean patients with glaucoma can now monitor their disease at home. This could be more convenient for patients and potentially reduce costs and increase capacity for the NHS. However, it is uncertain whether self-monitoring would be acceptable or possible for patients with glaucoma. OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to: identify which patients are most appropriate f

Early user perspectives on using computer-aided detection software for interpreting chest X-ray images to enhance access and quality of care for persons with tuberculosis.

Despite 30 years as a public health emergency, tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the world's deadliest diseases. Most deaths are among persons with TB who are not reached with diagnosis and treatment. Thus, timely screening and accurate detection of TB, particularly using sensitive tools such as chest radiography, is crucial for reducing the global burden of this disease. However, lack of qualified human resources represents a common limiting factor in many high TB-burden countries. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful complement in many facets of life, including for the inter

An AS-qPCR-based method for the detection of Alzheimer's disease-related SNPs.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most serious neurodegenerative diseases in the world and has a strong genetic predisposition. At present, there is still no effective method for the early diagnosis and prevention of AD. Accumulating evidence shows the association of several loci with AD risk, such as apolipoprotein E (APOE) and translocase of outer mitochondrial membrane 40 (TOMM40). However, for routine disease diagnosis in clinics, genotype detection methods based on gene sequencing technology are time-consuming and excessively costly. Thus, in this study, we developed a high-sensitivi

Rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis using a three-dimensional nanofiber paper-based electrochemical sensor.

Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death caused by a single infectious pathogen. Currently, a variety of conventional methods are widely used for detecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) or diagnosing TB, which have made significant contributions to controlling the TB epidemic. However, these existing TB diagnostic methods still face some difficulties and cannot provide rapid, low-cost, high-sensitivity, and high-accuracy diagnostic results simultaneously. Therefore, it is imperative to develop new TB diagnostic methods that are rapid, cost-effective, and sensitive through rigorous ev

Minute-scale detection of SARS-CoV-2 using a low-cost biosensor composed of pencil graphite electrodes.

COVID-19 has led to over 3.47 million deaths worldwide and continues to devastate primarily middle- and low-income countries. High-frequency testing has been proposed as a potential solution to prevent outbreaks. However, current tests are not sufficiently low-cost, rapid, or scalable to enable broad COVID-19 testing. Here, we describe LEAD (Low-cost Electrochemical Advanced Diagnostic), a diagnostic test that detects severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) within 6.5 min and costs $1.50 per unit to produce using easily accessible and commercially available materials.
