Hurricane Katrina-related maternal stress, maternal mental health, and early infant temperament.

To investigate temperament in infants whose mothers were exposed to Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, and to determine if high hurricane exposure is associated with difficult infant temperament. A prospective cohort study of women giving birth in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, LA (n = 288) in 2006-2007 was conducted. Questionnaires and interviews assessed the mother's experiences during the hurricane, living conditions, and psychological symptoms, 2 months and 12 months postpartum. Infant temperament characteristics were reported by the mother using the activity, adaptability, approach, inten…

The distinct temperament profiles of bipolar I, bipolar II and unipolar patients.

BACKGROUND: Despite a plethora of studies, controversies abound on whether the long-term traits of unipolar and bipolar patients could be differentiated by temperament and whether these traits, in turn, could be distinguished from subthreshold affective symptomatology. METHODS: 98 bipolar I (BP-I), 64 bipolar II (BP-II), and 251 unipolar major depressive disorder (UP-MDD) patients all when recovered from discrete affective episodes) and 617 relatives, spouses or acquaintances without lifetime RDC diagnoses (the comparison group, CG) were administered a battery of 17 self-rated personality sca…

Markers for vulnerability to psychopathology: temperament traits associated with platelet MAO activity.

The functional linkage between platelet MAO activity and psychopathology was explored by analyzing temperamental correlates in 40 male subjects by means of scales from the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), the Zuckerman Sensation Seeking Inventory, and the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP). Linear correlations were found with two sensation seeking scales, replicating earlier findings. However, nonlinear correlations predominated. Subjects with intermediate platelet MAO activity had higher scores in conformity scales and lower scores in anxiety and hostility scales than low and high…

The study aimed to develop a Structured Interview for Temperament and Character (SIT-C) and examine its psychometric properties, including interrater reliability, internal consistency, and convergent, discriminant, and incremental validity. METHODS: In a cross-sectional design with two samples (c…

METHODS: A representative sample of 1384 Korean adults over 18 years old (58 % female) were assessed with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). Multivariate anal…

Insulin Resistance, Temperament and Personality Traits Are Associated with Anhedonia in a Transdiagnostic Sample.

Anhedonia constitutes a core symptom of major depressive disorder (MDD) mediating the ultimate goal of MDD treatment: functional remission. Anhedonia is also present in other clinical populations, including patients with chronic pain. Recent data links anhedonia to insulin resistance (IR). Some researchers have underlined a different dimension of anhedonia as a temperament/personality trait. The objective of this post-hoc analysis was to explore the links between anhedonia (main outcome) and (1) IR, (2) temperamental, personality, and schizotypy traits (exposures). The study population include…

We aimed to assess the effects of clinical factors, affective temperaments, and attachment on overall functioning in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder. METHODS: Sixty-three patients with bipolar disorder and 61 healthy controls participated in this study. The assessment involved Hamilton Depression Rating Scale; Young Mania Rating Scale; Relationship Scales Questionnaire; Temperament Evaluation of Mem…

Prefrontal influences on the function of the neural circuitry underlying anxious temperament in primates.

Anxious temperament, characterized by heightened behavioral and physiological reactivity to potential threat, is an early childhood risk factor for the later development of stress-related psychopathology. Using a well-validated nonhuman primate model, we tested the hypothesis that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) is critical in regulating the expression of primate anxiety-like behavior, as well as the function of subcortical components of the anxiety-related neural circuit. We performed aspiration lesions of a narrow 'strip' of the posterior orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) intended to disrupt both corte…

The relationship between impulsivity and panic disorder-agoraphobia: The role of affective temperament.

There are opinions regarding that impulsivity may play a role in the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between impulsivity and panic disorder (PD) in the patient group, to compare impulsivity and affective temperamental traits between patients and healthy controls and to investigate whether there is a relationship between impulsivity and affective temperamental traits. Participants comprised 70 patients with PD and 58 healthy volunteers. The Panic Agoraphobia Scale (PAS), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) and the Temper…

Distinct temperament and character profiles in first onset vitiligo but not in alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata (AA) and vitiligo (V) are diseases that are correlated with psychiatric disorders before, during and after diagnosis. The Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) is a well-established approach for investigating personality traits in various psychosomatic diseases. The aim of this study is to compare and investigate the differences in the TCI between patients with first onset AA, patients with V and healthy controls (HC). Participants in the study included 42 patients with first onset AA, 50 adult patients with V and 60 HC who had no history or diagnoses of psychiatric or derm…

Temperament and character modify risk of drug addiction and influence choice of drugs.

BACKGROUND: Drug addiction and alcoholism involve a complex etiopathogenesis with a variable degree of risk contributions from the host (person), environment, and addictive substances. In this work, temperament and character features of individuals addicted to opiates or alcohol are compared with normal controls to study personality factors in the overall risk for drug addiction. METHODS: The study was done in a permissive environment, with easy access to alcohol and heroin, which facilitated analyses of personality factors in drug choice. Participants included 412 consecutive patients (312 o…

Equine behaviour and heart rate in temperament tests with or without rider or handler.

The aim of the present study was to compare horses' heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (RMSSD, pNN50) and behaviour in the same temperament test when being ridden, led, and released free. Behavioural measurements included scores and linear measurements for reactivity (R), activity (A), time to calm down (T) and emotionality (E), recorded during the approach (1) and/or during confrontation with the stimulus (2). Sixty-five horses were each confronted 3 times (1 ridden, 1 led, 1 free running in balanced order) with 3 novel and/or sudden stimuli. Mixed model analysis indicated that leading r…

The relationship between obstetric complications and temperament in eating disorders: a mediation hypothesis.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have hypothesized that perinatal complications might increase the risk of developing eating disorders. However, it is unclear which pathways might link obstetric complications and eating disorders. The present study aimed at exploring the relationship between obstetric complications and temperament in eating disordered subjects. METHODS: The sample was selected among subjects who took part in a prevalence study carried out on a representative sample of the general population and from among people with anorexia and bulimia nervosa referred to an outpatient specialist …

The influence of temperament and character of psychotic individuals on the possibility of committing criminal offences.

Cloninger's theoretical biosocial model of personality represents the personality as a hierarchical organisational system consisting of 4 temperament dimensions and 3 character dimensions as 3 aspects of self-concept. It attempts to define behavioural and bio-genetic aspects of temperament, and the neuroanatomical and biochemical brain network responsible for activation, maintenance and inhibition of behaviour. The basic objective of this research is to establish whether temperament and character act as measures of personalities in psychotic persons on the possibility of committing criminal of…
