Direct contact ultrasound tempering of frozen pork: Effects on physicochemical properties, myofibrillar protein and microstructure.

Traditional ultrasound-assisted meat tempering usually adopts the water-immersion method, which requires water as a coupling medium and is inconvenient for application in most scenarios. Direct contact ultrasound tempering treatment was proposed to improve the tempering conveniency and retain the freshness of frozen meat products. In this study, the effects of water immersion ultrasound (WUT), direct contact ultrasound with water bag (CUTW), and direct contact ultrasound with ultrasonic couplant bag (CUTC) were compared with traditional air (AT) and water (WT) tempering on the tempering rate a

Elevated CO2 alters relative belowground carbon investment for nutrient acquisition in a mature temperate forest.

Forests are potential carbon (C) sinks that partially offset anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions via enhanced C assimilation and productivity. However, the question remains whether mature trees will express sufficient plasticity in nutrient acquisition strategies to support enhanced growth under elevated CO2 (eCO2). Trees may sustain growth by investing C belowground to enhance nutrient acquisition, e.g., by increasing root absorptive surfaces for greater soil available resource exploration (a "do-it-yourself" strategy) or utilizing C exudation or mycorrhizal associations as priming m

Air speed and direction affect metabolic and thermoregulatory responses during walking and running in a temperate environment.

Revisiting classical experiments on the impact of air resistance on metabolic rate, we aimed to overcome limitations of previous research, notably: low participant numbers (n = 1-3), highly turbulent wind, and confounding effects of rising body temperature. In a custom-built wind tunnel with reduced turbulence, 14 participants (8 males, 6 females) walked (5 km·h-1) and ran on a treadmill (70%V̇o2max) at 0, 2, 4, and 6 m·s-1 headwind or tailwind in a counterbalanced design, with rest breaks between each exposure to avoid rises in body core temperature. Oxygen consumption (V̇o2) exhibited strong

Isolation of Streptococcus mutans temperate bacteriophage with broad killing activity to S. mutans clinical isolates.

Bacteriophages are expected to be therapeutic agents against infectious diseases. Streptococcus mutans are involved in dental plaque formation related to dental caries and periodontitis. In S. mutans, lytic bacteriophages have been isolated previously, but the isolation of temperate bacteriophage has not been reported although their presence in the genome has been confirmed. Here, we report the isolation of temperate bacteriophage, φKSM96, from S. mutans. φKSM96 has a circular DNA 39,820 bp long and reveals Siphoviridae morphology. φKSM96 shows a broad range of susceptibility against S. mutans

Effects of temperature on incidence of bacillary dysentery in a temperate continental arid climate city in northwest China.

The effect of ambient temperature on health continues to draw more and more attention with the global warming. Bacillary dysentery (BD) is a major global environmental health issue and affected by temperature and other environmental variables. In the current study, we evaluated the effect of temperature on the incidence of BD from January 1st, 2008 to December 31st, 2011 in Jiayuguan, a temperate continental arid climate city in the Hexi Corridor of northwest China. A distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was performed to evaluate the lag effect of temperature on BD up to 30 days. Results sh

Comprehensive diagnosis of parasites in sheep kept under different zootechnical management in a region temperate in Mexico.

Parasites cause losses in animal production. Parasite infection in ruminants has been estimated to be a major problem causing more than 3 billion USD per year, from which 60% corresponds to the sheep industry. Treatment is based on the use of synthetic anthelmintics; however, repeated application or under dosage have resulted in the selection of nematodes resistant to anthelmintics. The objective of the present work was to perform a diagnosis of gastrointestinal parasites in sheep kept under different zootechnical management. Ninety female sheep were used, most of them pregnant. Sampling was p

Temperate Zone Plant Natural Products-A Novel Resource for Activity against Tropical Parasitic Diseases.

The use of plant-derived natural products for the treatment of tropical parasitic diseases often has ethnopharmacological origins. As such, plants grown in temperate regions remain largely untested for novel anti-parasitic activities. We describe here a screen of the PhytoQuest Phytopure library, a novel source comprising over 600 purified compounds from temperate zone plants, against in vitro culture systems for Plasmodium falciparum, Leishmania mexicana, Trypanosoma evansi and T. brucei. Initial screen revealed 6, 65, 15 and 18 compounds, respectively, that decreased each parasite's growth b

Influence of nutrient enrichment on temporal and spatial dynamics of dissolved oxygen within northern temperate estuaries.

In temperate estuaries of the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, intermittent seasonal anoxia coupled with phytoplankton blooms is a regular occurrence in watersheds dominated by agricultural land use. To examine the spatial relationship between dissolved oxygen and phytoplankton throughout the estuary to assist in designing monitoring programs, oxygen depth profiles and chlorophyll measurements were taken bi-weekly from May to December in 18 estuaries. In five of those estuaries, dissolved oxygen data loggers were set to measure oxygen at hourly intervals and at multiple locations within the estu

Delayed mortality effects of cold fronts during the winter season on Aedes aegypti in a temperate region.

The expansion of the invasive mosquito Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) towards temperate regions in the Americas is causing concern because of its public health implications. As for other insects, the distribution limits of Ae. aegypti have been suggested to be related to minimum temperatures and to be controlled mainly by cold tolerance. The aim of this study was to assess the daily mortality of immature stages of Ae. aegypti under natural winter conditions in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in relation to preceding thermal conditions. The experiment was performed outdoors, and one cohort of l

Host species influence on flea (Siphonaptera) infection parameters of terrestrial micromammals in a temperate forest of Mexico.

Studies of abundance and distribution of organisms are fundamental to ecology. The identity of host species is known to be one of the major factors influencing ectoparasitic flea abundance, but explanations are still needed regarding how host taxa influence abundance parameters of different flea species. This study was carried out at La Malinche National Park (LMNP), Tlaxcala, Mexico, where previously 11 flea species had been recorded on 8 host species. Our aims were to list micromammal flea species, to determine flea infection parameters [flea prevalence (FP) and flea mean abundance (FMA)] an

Potential contributions of dissolved organic matter to monomethylmercury distributions in temperate reservoirs as revealed by fluorescence spectroscopy.

The monomethylmercury (MMHg) concentrations, water quality parameters (e.g., pH, suspended particles, total phosphorus, sulfate, and chlorophyll-a), and compositions of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were analyzed to understand how the quality of DOM is related to the MMHg distributions in the surface waters of 14 reservoirs. The excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy identified six fluorescence peaks, and a parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) of EEM spectra identified three components of DOM: microbial humic-like (C1), terrestrial humic-like (C2), and protein-like DOM (C3).

Co-occurrence of viruses and mosquitoes at the vectors' optimal climate range: An underestimated risk to temperate regions?

Mosquito-borne viruses have been estimated to cause over 100 million cases of human disease annually. Many methodologies have been developed to help identify areas most at risk from transmission of these viruses. However, generally, these methodologies focus predominantly on the effects of climate on either the vectors or the pathogens they spread, and do not consider the dynamic interaction between the optimal conditions for both vector and virus. Here, we use a new approach that considers the complex interplay between the optimal temperature for virus transmission, and the optimal climate fo

Analysis of the First Temperate Broad Host Range Brucellaphage (BiPBO1) Isolated from B. inopinata.

Brucella species are important human and animal pathogens. Though, only little is known about mobile genetic elements of these highly pathogenic bacteria. To date, neither plasmids nor temperate phages have been described in brucellae. We analyzed genomic sequences of various reference and type strains and identified a number of putative prophages residing within the Brucella chromosomes. By induction, phage BiPBO1 was isolated from Brucella inopinata. BiPBO1 is a siphovirus that infects several Brucella species including Brucella abortus and Brucella melitensis. Integration of the phage genom

Dry deposition of O3 and SO2 estimated from gradient measurements above a temperate mixed forest.

Vertical profiles of O3 and SO2 concentrations were monitored at the Borden Forest site in southern Ontario, Canada from May 2008 to April 2013. A modified gradient method (MGM) was applied to estimate O3 and SO2 dry deposition fluxes using concentration gradients between a level above and a level below the canopy top. The calculated five-year mean (median) dry deposition velocity (Vd) were 0.35 (0.27) and 0.59 (0.54) cm s(-1), respectively, for O3 and SO2. Vd(O3) exhibited large seasonal variations with the highest monthly mean of 0.68 cm s(-1) in August and the lowest of 0.09 cm s(-1) in Feb

Effect of summer conditions and shade on the production and metabolism of Holstein dairy cows on pasture in temperate climate.

For dairy cattle on pasture in temperate regions, it is largely unknown to what degree hot summer conditions impact energy metabolism, milk yield and milk composition and how effective shade is in reducing these negative effects. During the summer of 2012, a herd of Holstein cows was kept on pasture without access to shade (treatment NS). During the summers of 2011 and 2013, the herd was divided into a group with (treatment S) and a group without (treatment NS) access to shade. Shade was provided by young trees combined with shade cloths (80% reduction in solar radiation). A weather station re

Is the use of cuttings a good proxy to explore phenological responses of temperate forests in warming and photoperiod experiments?

For obvious practical reasons, tree phenological data obtained in warming and photoperiod experiments are generally conducted on juvenile trees (saplings and seedlings) or on watered or rooted cuttings collected from adult trees. As juvenile trees differ from adult trees in their phenological response to environmental conditions, they represent inappropriate plant material to experimentally assess the phenological responses of forests to seasonality. Cuttings are physiologically closer to adult trees, but cutting itself and the disruption of hormonal signals may create artefacts. This study ai

Incidence of invasive macrophytes on methylmercury budget in temperate lakes: central role of bacterial periphytic communities.

Several studies demonstrated high mercury (Hg) methylation and demethylation in the periphyton associated with floating roots in tropical ecosystems. The importance of aquatic plants on methylmercury production in three temperate ecosystems from south-western France was evaluated through Hg species concentrations, and Hg methylation/demethylation activities by using stable isotopic tracers ((199)Hg(II), Me(201)Hg). Hg accumulation and high methylation and demethylation yields were detected in plant roots and periphyton, whereas results for sediment and water were low to insignificant. The pres

Solar radiation disinfection of drinking water at temperate latitudes: inactivation rates for an optimised reactor configuration.

Solar radiation-driven inactivation of bacteria, virus and protozoan pathogen models was quantified in simulated drinking water at a temperate latitude (34 degrees S). The water was seeded with Enterococcus faecalis, Clostridium sporogenes spores, and P22 bacteriophage, each at ca 1x10(5) mL(-1), and exposed to natural sunlight in 30-L reaction vessels. Water temperature ranged from 17 to 39 degrees C during the experiments lasting up to 6h. Dark controls showed little inactivation and so it was concluded that the inactivation observed was primarily driven by non-thermal processes. The optimis
