Severe Aplastic Anemia Developed after Thymectomy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Thymus neoplasms are frequently related to paraneoplastic autoimmune manifestations. Its most common associations are myasthenia gravis and pure red cell aplasia. Aplastic anemia has been increasingly documented as an initial presentation of thymoma. Nevertheless, its development after successful surgical resection of thymoma is a rare condition. We report a case of a 53-year-old man with severe aplastic anemia preceded by amegakaryocytic thrombocytopenia three years after thymectomy with no signs of disease recurrence. He underwent immunosuppressive therapy with cyclosporine 5 mg/kg/day and p…

Lymphoma versus thymoma: A diagnostic challenge.

T-cell acute lymphoblastic lymphoma is a common hematological malignancy of childhood. It can involve the bone marrow, blood, or tissues like the thymus, lymph nodes as well as extra-nodal sites. Two aspects of the disease make early diagnosis critical - the clinically aggressive nature of the neoplasm, and availability of effective chemotherapy against the disease. Diagnosis is largely based on clinical suspicion and confirmation by histopathological examination of the affected tissue. However, biopsy results may not always be helpful in establishing the diagnosis. We describe the case of an

Thymoma and Synchronous Primary Mediastinal Seminomas with Florid Follicular Lymphoid Hyperplasia in the Anterior Mediastinum: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Thymoma is the most common neoplasm of the anterior mediastinum and has malignant potential. Germ cell tumors (GCTs) found in the anterior mediastinum are usually benign, and malignant GCTs, such as seminomas, are rare. Histologically, mediastinal seminoma is indistinguishable from testicular seminoma except for site-associated morphological features such as lymphoid follicular hyperplasia. Therefore, excluding metastasis is very important. Recently, we treated a young adult patient with multiple thymic masses that occurred simultaneously. The patient underwent a thymectomy for the removal of

Superior vena caval syndrome and ipsilateral pleural effusion: A rare presentation of anterior mediastinal thymoma.

Incidence of thymic malignancies is very low. Thymoma, a tumor of thymus gland, is of epithelial origin and is most common anterior mediastinal tumor. In most cases, thymomas are localized and locally advanced thymomas may rarely present with superior vena caval obstruction (SVCO) and malignant pleural deposits. Microscopically, capsular invasion is noted in case of locally advanced thymomas, which behave like a malignant neoplasm. Complete surgical removal of the tumor along with intact capsule is the treatment modality of choice in case of localized tumors. Neoadjuvant radiotherapy (RT) and

[Inhibitory effect of Biejiajianwan pills on tumor growth and proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression in mice bearing H22 cell-induced tumor].

OBJECTIVE: To study the anti-tumor effect of Biejiajianwan pills and explore its mechanism. METHODS: Mice bearing neoplasm induced by H22 cell inoculation were randomized into 4 groups, namely the negative control group, positive control group (with cyclophosphamide treatment), and high- and low-dose Biejiajianwan pill group. The tumor-bearing mice received corresponding treatments for 15 consecutive days, after which their thymuses and spleens were isolated and weighed to calculate the thymus and spleen indices. The tumor mass was also weighed and the tumor inhibition rate calculated. Immuno

Extrarenal malignant rhabdoid tumour of the heel--a case report.

Malignant rhabdoid tumour is a rare soft-tissue neoplasm that occurs in children and young adults. Cases have involved numerous extrarenal sites, including the thymus, liver, paravertebral region, central nervous system, heart, prostate, pelvis, chest wall, extremities, as well as soft tissues. Given their highly aggressive nature, early diagnosis of rhabdoid tumours is essential; indeed, survival times after initial presentation are typically in the range of months rather than years. The low incidence of rhabdoid tumours and confusion between this type of tumour and other tumours has preclude

Alterations of the immune system in thymic malignancies.

Normal thymic architecture is essential for the proper development of T-lymphocytes. Immature T-cell progenitors enter the thymus where through interactions with cortical and medullary thymic epithelial cells (TECs) they undergo positive and negative selection and become competent cells that do not react with self-antigens. This process requires normal thymic architecture, expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II, and normal expression of the autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene. Thymomas are rare neoplasms of the TECs that often generate lymphocytes that mature into CD4+ and

Brain metastases from a thymoma: Case report for a rare secondary localization.

Thymomas are benign epithelial neoplasms originating from the thymus gland and are among the most common primary mediastinal tumors. Malignancy is typically determined by evidence of pathological invasion beyond the capsule, with local invasion being the primary mode of spread to adjacent organs. Distant metastases are exceedingly rare. We present the case of a 63-year-old man who exhibited symptoms suggestive of increased intracranial pressure and motor deficit. Brain imaging revealed multiple intracranial lesions. Surgical intervention was performed to excise the largest lesion. Subsequent b

FIP1L1-PDGFRA fusion gene in T-lymphoblastic lymphoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: T-lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL) is an aggressive malignancy of T-lymphoid precursors, rarely co-occurring with myeloid/lymphoid neoplasms with eosinophilia (M/LNs-Eo), with consequent rearrangement of tyrosine kinase (TK)-related genes. The FIP1L1-PDGFRA fusion gene is the most frequent molecular abnormality seen in eosinophilia-associated myeloproliferative disorders, but is also present in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), T-lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (TLL), or both simultaneously. T-LBL mainly affects children and young adults, involving lymph node, bone marrow, and thymus. It

A novel potent tumour promoter aberrantly overexpressed in most human cancers.

The complexity and heterogeneity of tumours have hindered efforts to identify commonalities among different cancers. Furthermore, because we have limited information on the prevalence and nature of ubiquitous molecular events that occur in neoplasms, it is unfeasible to implement molecular-targeted cancer screening and prevention. Here, we found that the FEAT protein is overexpressed in most human cancers, but weakly expressed in normal tissues including the testis, brain, and liver. Transgenic mice that ectopically expressed FEAT in the thymus, spleen, liver, and lung spontaneously developed

Original report of bilateral carotid body tumors with 2 rare concomitant anatomic findings, an ectopic parathyroid gland and cervical thymus, with literature review.

BACKGROUND: Carotid body tumors are uncommon neoplasms with unique epidemiology and management demands. Cervical embryology is complex. Developmental abnormalities can result in ectopic displacement of native tissues. METHODS: We present the case of a 21-year-old female with bilateral carotid body paragangliomas who presented to our clinic seeking excision of the symptomatic right-sided tumor. RESULTS: The patient was successfully treated with surgical excision. Two rare anatomic variants were identified in her surgical specimen: a carotid sheath parathyroid gland and ectopic thymus tissue.

Endocardial schwannomas in the Wistar rat.

Endocardial neoplasms were observed in 13 Wistar rats, 15-30 months old, from a 30-month inhalation study. Eight of the rats were dissected at 30 months and the other five between 15 and 29 months. Histologically, the lesions in the heart were diagnosed as endocardial schwannomas. Two of the 13 schwannomas were malignant, while the rest were benign. One malignant schwannoma metastasized to the thymus and the other metastasized to the aorta, oesophagus, liver and spleen. Some schwannomas appeared as early lesions limited to the endocardium consisting of round to ovoid cells interspersed with sp

CD30: expression and function in health and disease.

CD30 was originally described as a marker of Hodgkin's and Reed-Sternberg cells in Hodgkin's lymphoma. Cloning and characterization of cDNAs encoding CD30 and its ligand (CD30L) established these proteins as members of the tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamilies, respectively. Expression of CD30 is mostly restricted to virus-infected lymphocytes, neoplasms of lymphoid origin and a subset of activated T cells which produce Th2-type cytokines. The ligand is present on activated T cells, resting B cells, granulocytes, and the medulla of the thymus (epit

Morphologic lesions in aging Syrian hamsters.

The oldest members of most short- and long-lived mammalian species develop many similar morphologic changes. This suggests that the combined occurrence of a variety of age-associated lesions in a group can be used as an indicator of its advanced biological age. Males and females from our colony of aging Syrian hamsters were previously shown to have an equally high incidence of atrial thrombosis and myocardial degeneration, despite the females' much shorter life-span. Other age-associated lesions were then examined histopathologically to determine whether females age faster than males. Hepatic,

Over-expression of endoglin (CD105): a marker of breast carcinoma-induced neo-vascularization.

The commencement of the complex process of carcinogenesis, and subsequent, rapid tumor growth and progression of mammalian neoplasms, including breast carcinomas (BCs), depends upon the continuous de novo formation of capillaries [i.e. neovascularization (NV)/neoplasm-related angiogenesis (NRA)]. The generation of a malignant, invasive cellular immunophenotype (CIP) and distant metastases, as aspects of tumor progression, are also NRA-dependent processes. Endothelial cells undergo rapid proliferation during mammary carcinoma-related angiogenesis. Human endoglin (CD105/EDG), is a homodimeric ce

Thymolipoma, report of a case suggesting an origin from thymic true hyperplasia.

The authors describe a rare case of thymolipoma in a 26-year-old, otherwise healthy woman presenting with general fatigue. Radiological examinations disclosed a large anterior mediastinal mass. Macroscopically, the resected tumor was approximately 5 × 10 cm², with nodular configuration, and microscopically, 3 components were identified: a normal thymic rim, hyperplastic thymic tissue, and a typical thymolipomatous component at the periphery of the hyperplastic area. The predominant component of the tumor was hyperplastic thymic tissue. The tumor was diagnosed as thymolipoma at the initial stag

[Congenital anomalies of thymic origin in the neck].

RATIONALE: A symptomatic mass in the thymus is due to anomalies in the development of the pharyngeal pouches and is also an unusual cause of consultation. These anomalies may be found anywhere along the natural path of the embryonic thymus, from the angle of the jaw to the upper mediastinum. AIM: To review the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of congenital anomalies of thymic origin in the neck. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A MEDLINE search was carried out, using the Cochrane methodology, for articles published from January 1980 to January 2007 using the terms "thymus gland," "c

Pathology of thymoma-where are we today?

Thymoma is the commonest epithelial neoplasm arising from thymus gland. Tumour is slow growing and in the absence of metastasis, surgery is the treatment of choice. Complete resection and bland morphology are important prognostic features. However, a significant proportion of these tumours tend to recur. These recurrent tumours, advanced thymomas and thymic carcinomas require platinum-based combination chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Efforts are being made to explore additional treatment modalities to control disease with the aim of improving survival. Number of thymoma cases worldwide is small
