PURPOSE: Autoimmune thyroid disease seems to occur more often in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) than in the general pediatric population. We investigated the prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto's thyroiditis) in young patients with JIA in Greece, which has not been evaluated previously.
METHODS: This descriptive study included patients with JIA followed up at the Pediatric Rheumatology Unit of the Second Department of Pediatrics of a tertiary general hospital in Thessaloniki, Greece. All patients were diagnosed and sorted according to the classification criteria

AIM: Clinical studies indicate that there is an association between high levels of thyroid autoantibodies and psychiatric disorders, independent of impairment of thyroid function. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between thyroid autoimmunity and mood disorders in euthyroid girls with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) in a case-control study.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We recruited 82 participants: 41 pubertal female patients with thyroiditis from endocrine outpatient clinics and a control group of 41 healthy pubertal girls from the University Hospital. Age ranged from 12 to 18 years;

COVID-19 is a severe acute respiratory syndrome. Recent reports showed that autoimmune thyroiditis might occur following COVID-19 infection. We aimed to review the literature to assess the prevalence, clinical features and outcome of autoimmune thyroid disorders triggered by COVID-19. We reviewed case reports, case series, and observational studies of autoimmune thyroiditis including Graves' disease, Hashimoto thyroiditis, and silent thyroiditis developed in COVID-19 patients by searching PubMed, SCOPUS and Web of Science and included in the systematic review. Our search yielded no prevalence

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is still controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of coexistence of PTC with AT versus that of the coexistence of benign nodules with AT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional retrospective study including patients operated on for thyroid nodules from January 2011, to April 2021. The frequency of papillary carcinomas cooccurring with AT was compared to that of benign nodules cooccurring with AT, which was assessed based on cytopathological diagnosis after thyr

The use of sugar substitutes (artificial sweeteners or non-nutritive sweeteners) has increased dramatically in the past few decades. They have been used as a substitute for sucrose (table sugar) in various diet-related disorders. Their excessive use has been linked to hyperphagia and obesity-related disorders. Hashimoto's thyroiditis (chronic autoimmune thyroiditis) is a disease that involves the immune-mediated destruction of the thyroid gland, gradually leading to its failure. Animal studies report that artificial sweeteners affect the immune system. Moreover, animal studies show that sucral

Autoimmune thyroiditis is a polygenic disease which is the result of a combination of genetic factors and the environmental conditions, both of which are not yet completely understood. The relationship between the intake of vitamin D and the risk of Hashimoto's disease is the subject of this article. Vitamin D is known, first of all, for the role it plays in the regulation of calcium-phosphate homeostasis. Nowadays, it is known that vitamin D has a lot of different functions in the human organism, including acting as immunomodulatory factor. Receptors for 1,25(OH)2D3 have been found (among oth

Depression and chronic autoimmune thyroiditis are common diseases. The aim of this study was to determine whether the frequency of depression is elevated in patients with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis and normal thyroid function. A total of 201 subjects were included, of whom 107 and 94 participants were healthy or had euthyroid chronic autoimmune thyroiditis, respectively. Serum thyroid hormone levels and thyroid auto-antibodies were measured in all subjects. All participants were evaluated with Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). HDRS scores of patients with euthyroid chronic autoimmun

Adult-onset Still's disease is a rare inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology and has same clinical characteristics of the systemic form of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. A 17 years old white female had arthralgias of multiple joints including small joints of hands. She had fever, rash, hepatosplenomegaly, and CRP-122mg/dl, ESR-91mm in 1st hour. She had also TSH - 6.24μIU/mL, fT3 - 2.1pg/mL, fT4 - 1.36ng/dL and diagnosed as Adult-onset Still's disease with autoimmune thyroiditis. It is an inherited condition and is more common in women than in men.

Increased iodide intake has been linked to the development of hypothyroidism and/or autoimmune thyroiditis in humans and animals, but the mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. Increased ingestion of iodide is likely to have pleiotropic effects on either metabolic or immunological processes. Within the latter domain, recent interest has been focused on two areas: a) the role of iodinated peptides in thyroglobulin (Tg)--the molecular site of biosynthesis and storage of iodotyrosines and iodothyronines--in triggering an autoimmune cascade, and b) the role of iodine-induced apoptosis/necro

Chemokines, a group of proinflammatory chemotactic cytokines, function to recruit leukocytes to inflammation sites, but they also play important roles in tumor growth, angiogenesis, organ sclerosis, and autoimmunity. In recent years, increasing evidence has accumulated to support the concept that thyroid epithelial cells (TEC) as well as the lymphocytes infiltrating into the thyroid are capable of producing CC and CXC chemokines. They, in turn, promote the initiation and maintenance of an inflammatory response, resulting in the development of autoimmune thyroiditis. This review focused on the

Environmental factors can play an important role in the development of autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) and other autoimmune diseases. This article reviews the role of heavy metals and infectious agents in AT. Currently, the genes responsible for a metal-induced pathology are known in experimental animals but similar knowledge is lacking in man. Metals such as nickel or mercury induce delayed type T cell hypersensitivity (allergy) which is relatively common, especially in women. T-cell allergy can be studied with the lymphocyte transformation test, LTT-MELISA. It has been found that patients with A

UNLABELLED: Selenium as an essential trace element is capable of exerting complex effects on the endocrine and immune system by its antioxidant capacity. The role of selenium is important because the level of free oxygen radicals is elevated in the physiological thyroid hormone synthesis.
THE AIM OF STUDY: was to determine whether selenium therapy can influence the level of antithyroid peroxidase and antithyroglobulin antibodies or whether there is a correlation between antioxidant capacity and the titer of autoantibodies.

Thyroid hormones play an important role in the growth of the kidney and maintenance of its functions. Prolonged hypothyroidism is known to be accompanied by changes in renal morphology such as thickening of the glomerular and tubular basement membranes as well as increased mesangial matrix. Increased transcapillary leakage of plasma proteins leading to proteinuria and generalized edema is also a known complication of hypothyroidism. In particular, autoimmune thyroiditis is associated with proteinuria. Most previous reports of autoimmune thyroiditis with nephrotic syndrome have demonstrated mix

Autoimmune thyroiditis is often related to non-specific autoimmune organ diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome, systemic sclerosis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus or polymyalgia rheumatica. Etiology of autoimmune diseases has not been clearly discovered yet. In many aspects, mechanisms leading to organ-specific autoimmune diseases are identic with mechanisms causing organ-nonspecific autoimmune disease. In many cases genetic disposal combined with specific antigens can be seen. Another possible factor in terms of endogenesis is genus. External factors are important too, such

The CTLA-4-mediated signal is a critical step in the down-modulation of immune responses. The therapeutic potential of this signal to induce tissue-specific tolerance was investigated by using an anti-CTLA-4 antibody that was coupled to an antibody specific for the thyrotropin receptor. After in vivo administration, this bispecific antibody (BiAb) accumulated in the thyroid and prevented development of experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT) in mice immunized with mouse thyroglobulin (mTg). Lymphocytes from BiAb-treated mice showed a significant reduction in their ability to proliferate, and

We report the case of a 63-year-old patient with sudden onset of an acute syndrome of auditory hallucinations and delusions. Considering the anamnesis, course of the illness, and organopathologic results, we assumed an organic schizophreniform disorder within the scope of pre-existing autoimmune thyroiditis. Under treatment with high-potency neuroleptics, we observed partial regression and, after strumectomy, complete regression of the psychotic symptoms. Apparently, the acute organic schizophreniform disorder was caused by a changed metabolic situation with a transition to hyperthyroidism coi
