BACKGROUND: Dermatophyte identification in tinea capitis is essential for choosing the appropriate treatment and in tinea infections to identify the possible source. The failure of fungi to grow in cultures frequently occurs, especially in cases of previous antifungal therapy.
OBJECTIVES: To develop a rapid polymerase chain reaction (PCR) sequencing assay for dermatophyte identification in tinea capitis and tinea corporis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fungal DNA was extracted from hair and skin samples that were confirmed to be positive by direct mycological examination. Dermatophytes were identifi…

BACKGROUND: In mid-2024, German media reported increasing fungal infections by Trichophyton tonsurans linked to visits to barbershops. However, epidemiological data confirming a rise in tinea capitis and tinea corporis due to Trichophyton tonsurans are lacking.
OBJECTIVES: This study assesses dermatophyte species and clinical types of infections in German university hospitals in 2018 and 2023.
PATIENTS/METHODS: This retrospective, multicentre study analyses mycological culture results from three Departments of Dermatology in Freiburg, Tübingen and Munich. The dermatophyte, along with the sam…

A total of 350 clinically suspected cases of dermatomycoses were examined for causative fungi during July 1997 to September 1998. Mycotic infection was demonstrable by microscopy and culture in 199 (56.8%) cases. The most common superficial mycotic infections were tinea pedis (35.2%) followed by tinea capitis (23.1%), tinea unguium (21.6%) and tinea corporis (10.6%). Most of the infected patients were 1-9, 20-29 and 30-39 years old. Men were mainly infected with tinea cruris and tinea pedis, while women were infected with tinea pedis, tinea unguium and tinea capitis. The frequencies of etiolog…

Tinea infections (often called ringworm) are caused by dermatophyte fungi and classified by the body site involved. Tinea corporis and tinea capitis are most common in prepubertal children, and tinea cruris, tinea pedis, and tinea unguium (most common type of onychomycosis) are more likely in adolescents and adults. Clinical diagnosis without testing may be unreliable because other conditions can resemble tinea infections (eg, tinea corporis can be confused with eczema, and onychomycosis with dystrophic toenails from repeated low-level trauma or psoriasis). Tinea corporis, tinea cruris, and ti…

BACKGROUND: Fungal dermatological diseases are significant public health issues. Dermoscopy is a useful bedside assessment tool that helps clinicians diagnose various skin neoplasms and general dermatological diseases.
AIM: This brief review aims to update clinicians on the dermoscopic features of cutaneous fungal infections such as tinea capitis, tinea corporis, tinea incognito, onychomycosis, and pityrosporum folliculitis.
METHODS: The PubMed database was searched using the terms "dermoscopy" or its synonyms, "tinea capitis", "tinea corporis", "tinea incognito", "onychomycosis" and "pityro…

Trichophyton tonsurans has long been recognized as an important, but hitherto uncommon, cause of tinea capitis in the United States. Today it is known to be more common, but infection of the glabrous skin by this organism is still not well appreciated. In an epidemiologic study during the two decades from 1961 to 1980, 1,292 isolates of thirteen species of dermatophytes were obtained from patients at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. During the last 3 years of study, T. tonsurans accounted for 207 cases (96%) of tinea capitis and ninety-seven cases (75%) of tinea corporis. Ninety-five percent of …

Our knowledge of ecology and epidemiology of dermatophytes and the factors influencing their transmission has helped us understand better the natural history of dermatophytoses. It seems that the anthropophilic agents of scalp infection are being eradicated in developing nations. The exception is Trichophyton tonsurans-related tinea capitis in North America. Microsporum canis is a prevalent agent of tinea capitis in many regions of the world, and this could be related to close association of humans with their pets. Trichophyton violaceum is endemic in certain parts of Eastern Europe, Africa, A…

Tinea capitis is generally thought to be a common disease in children but not in adults. When infection does occur in adults, it may have an atypical appearance. We report an elderly female with inflammatory tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton rubrum. She had numerous pustular lesions throughout the scalp with alopecia, initially treated for bacterial infection. We concluded that tinea capitis should remain in the differential diagnosis of elderly patients with alopecia and pyoderma like presentations and culture test should be routinely done in such patients to avoid complications.

Tinea capitis, folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and pediculosis capitis are four common scalp conditions. Although tinea capitis and seborrheic dermatitis are found more commonly in patients with skin of color and highly textured hair, all of these conditions have special diagnostic or management considerations in these populations. This article reviews the diagnosis and management of these common scalp conditions.

We studied dermatophyte infections in patients attending the Dermatology Outpatients Clinic of S. Matteo hospital Pavia, Italy, during the p … aceum. The most common dermatophyte infections included tinea corporis, tinea pedis, tinea unguium, tinea capitis and tinea cruris. Zoophilic dermatophytes were most commonly recovered from children and adolescents with tinea capitis and tinea corporis. Anthropophilic species were identified mostly in adults with tinea pedis, tinea cruris and onychomycosis.

555 clinically suspected cases of dermatomycoses were studied for causative fungi and their detailed clinical manifestations. The fungi were demonstrated on routine KOH mount and/or by culture in 464 cases (83.6%). Tinea corporis was the predominant fungal infection (30.6%) and T. rubrum was the main etiologic agent. Favus (T. schoenleini) was found only in cases from Jammu and Kashmir valleys. There was a high incidence of tinea capitis among children. Trichophyton tonsurans was isolated in cases of tinea corporis, tinea cruris, and tinea pedis. Trichophyton ferrugineum and T. verrucosum were…

This article describes common cutaneous mycoses in children: mucocutaneous candidiasis, pityriasis versicolor, tinea corporis, tinea pedis, onychomycosis and tinea capitis. Topical therapy is effective in tinea corporis and pedis, pityriasis versicolor and cutaneous candidiasis. It is ineffective in tinea capitis, in immunocompromised children and onychomycosis. Griseofulvin has been the main treatment until now in children, but it is only fungistatic, may cause interactions and has to be given for long periods. Ketoconazole has not been widely accepted for use in children because of hepatotox…

Fluconazole has excellent absorption and good persistence in tissues that suggests it may be useful in superficial fungal infections. The predominant use in pediatric superficial fungal infection has been for tinea capitis, and successful treatment has been shown with both daily and weekly fluconazole regimens. The data regarding fluconazole use in superficial fungal infections in children are somewhat limited; however, it seems that there is good potential for the safe use of fluconazole to treat tinea capitis in children. Further studies need to be conducted, particularly in cases of tinea c…

The first cases of Trichophyton tonsurans infection outbreaks were reported in Japan beginning around the turn of the 21th century. Initial reports were of group infections among high school and college combat sports athletes. Gradually, the spread of infection to younger age groups, such as junior high school students, was confirmed. Today, T. tonsurans is considered one of the major causative organisms of tinea corporis and tinea capitis in Japan. The most common clinical manifestations of T. tonsurans infection are tinea corporis and tinea capitis. Tinea corporis can be difficult to disting…
