Accuracy of Different Imaging CBCT Systems for the Detection of Natural External Radicular Resorption Cavities: An Ex Vivo Study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the sensitivity and specificity of 3 different systems of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the detection of natural external root resorption (ERR) cavities using microtomography as the gold standard. METHOD: A sample of 126 ex vivo teeth were submitted to a microtomography examination to verify the presence/absence of ERR cavities. Then, they were divided into the control group: 85 teeth that did not present with an ERR cavity; and experimental group: 41 teeth that presented with 1 or more ERR cavities. The size of the natural ERR cavitie

Multimodular assessment of a calcified extraradicular deposit on the root surfaces of a mandibular molar.

AIM: To achieve a better understanding of a calcified extraradicular deposit on the apical root surfaces of a mandibular first molar associated with a radicular cyst and a sinus tract. A multimodular approach was applied using a combination of multiple investigation methods. SUMMARY: This case report presents a mandibular first molar with a calcified extraradicular deposit on the apical root surfaces of both roots. An apical periodontitis lesion was present and a sinus tract served as the only communication with the oral cavity. Diagnosis and treatment planning were based on clinical, radiogr

In vitro study assessing apical leakage of sealer-only backfills in root canals of primary teeth.

AIM: To assess the sealing ability of zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE), Apexit, and Sealapex used as sealer-only backfills in root canals of primary teeth using the high-pressure replica technique. METHODOLOGY: Two hundred and seventy root canals of deciduous molars as well as primary anterior teeth were randomly assigned to three groups (n=90). Root canals were prepared to size 35 and filled with either zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE), Apexit, or Sealapex using a lentulo filler. Twenty-four hours after setting of the materials the roots were nail-varnished (except for the apical tip), and half of the speci

Quantitative and Qualitative Correlation of Mandibular Lingual Bone with Risk Factors for Third Molar Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography.

BACKGROUND: Lingual plate thickness, density, and proximity to the tooth are linked as risk factors for various complications associated with third molar extraction. The present study aimed to assess the lingual plate thickness, and density in the mandibular third molar region using cone beam computed tomography and to estimate its correlation with type and level of impaction, number of roots, age, and gender as the risk factors. METHODS: This was a retrospective study on CBCT images of 648 mandibular third molars. The lingual plate thickness at three different root levels - cervical, mid-roo

Root-like apical hard-tissue structure associated with apical periodontitis in an immature permanent tooth: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Normal root formation depends on the developing apical complex (DAC), which coordinates root and periodontal tissue development. Root-like apical hard-tissue development is a rare odontogenic finding that has been reported in association with developmental disturbances, trauma, and inflammatory conditions. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 15-year-old male presented with pain in the lower right premolar (tooth 45). Cone-beam computed tomography and histopathological revealed chronic periapical periodontitis associated with a root-like apical hard-tissue structure con

Contribution of cone beam computed tomography to the detection of apical root resorption after orthodontic treatment in root-filled and vital teeth.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether root-filled teeth are similar to vital pulp teeth in terms of apical root resorption (ARR) after orthodontic treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An original sample of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 1256 roots from 30 orthodontic patients were analyzed. The inclusion criteria demanded root-filled teeth and their contralateral vital teeth, while teeth with history of trauma had to be excluded to comply with exclusion criteria. CBCT images of root-filled teeth were compared before and after orthodontic treatment in a split-mouth design study. Tooth

Idiopathic root resorption of the entire permanent dentition: systematic review and report of a case.

A rare case of idiopathic root resorption affecting the entire dentition was described. Root resorptions of all of the maxillary and mandibular teeth were coincidentally diagnosed on patient's radiographic examination. The patient's medical and dental findings were non-contributory, other than the increased mobility of upper incisors. No significant familial findings could be identified. Detailed radiographic examination revealed resorption affecting the apical part of the roots, resulting in vertical shortening of the teeth. The character of the resorption was as if a tapering occurred throug

Giant radicular cyst of the maxilla.

Radicular cysts are inflammatory odontogenic cysts of tooth bearing areas of the jaws. Most of these lesions involve the apex of offending tooth and appear as well-defined radiolucencies. Owing to its clinical characteristics similar to other more commonly occurring lesions in the oral cavity, differential diagnosis should include dentigerous cyst, ameloblastoma, odontogenic keratocyst, periapical cementoma and Pindborg tumour. The present case report documents a massive radicular cyst crossing the midline of the palate. Based on clinical, radiographical and histopathological findings, the pre

Apexification with calcium hydroxide and mineral trioxide aggregate: Report of two cases.

The completion of root development and closure of the apex occurs up to 3 years after the eruption of the tooth. The treatment of pulpal injury during this period provides a significant challenge for the clinician. The importance of careful case assessment and accurate pulpal diagnosis in the treatment of immature teeth with pulpal injury cannot be overemphasized. The treatment of choice for necrotic teeth is apexification, which is induction of apical closure to produce more favorable conditions for conventional root canal filling. The most commonly advocated medicament is calcium hydroxide,

Periodontal implications of surgical-orthodontic treatment of an impacted dilacerated maxillary incisor: A case report with a 2-year follow-up.

The treatment of an 8-year-old girl with a dilacerated maxillary incisor began in the mixed dentition; a modified palatal arch attached to the molars served as anchorage for the forced eruption of the dilacerated tooth to prevent the intrusion of the adjacent teeth and reduce the risk of root resorption. Two surgical sessions were planned: the first to permit the closed eruption; the second was an apically positioned flap to add attached gingiva to the labial side of the erupting tooth. The result was an optimal periodontal outcome; moreover, the roots of the adjacent teeth did not show any si

Intrusive Luxation in Primary Teeth: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Intrusive luxation, also called central dislocation, is often the result of an axial impact in the apical direction, moving the tooth within the alveolar bone. This is possibly one of the most traumatic injuries, since the displacement of a tooth within its socket implies extensive and acute involvement of the periodontal ligament, bone damage and rupture of the neurovascular bundle. The close relationship between the apexes of the primary teeth and the developing permanent successor in turn can lead to multiple complications, which are greater when the permanent tooth is affected

Impact on perceived root resorption based on the amount of incisal inclination as determined from conventional panoramic radiography.

INTRODUCTION: Our objective was to measure the impact on perceived root resorption based on the amount of anteroposterior incisal inclination as determined in vitro from conventional panoramic radiography. METHODS: A rapid prototyping model was created to mimic different maxillary and mandibular incisal anteroposterior inclinations. Two titanium beads were placed on the incisors at the apical and incisal edges. Panoramic radiographs were obtained, with the incisors changing relative inclination by 10° increments. The length was measured from the midpoint of the bead on the incisal edge to the

Saw-tooth cardiomyopathy.

We present an unusual case of cardiomyopathy in a two month old male infant with a grade-I systolic murmur. Echocardiographic examination disclosed left ventricular (LV), dysplasia with saw-tooth like inwards myocardial projections extending from the lateral walls towards the LV cavity. There was mild LV systolic dysfunction with apical hypokinesia. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance demonstrated in detail these cross bridging muscular projections originating from the inferior interventricular septum and lateral LV wall, along with areas of hypokinesis at the LV septum and apex in a noncoronary

Maxillary incisor root resorption in relation to the ectopic canine: a review of 26 patients.

A retrospective study of 26 patients with maxillary incisor root resorption relating to the presence of an ectopic canine was undertaken from case records. The group consisted of nine male and 17 female patients with a mean age of 12.5 years. There was a total of 35 resorbed teeth, 26 lateral and nine central incisors, and these were related to 32 ectopic canines. The resorption tended to be extensive, 30 teeth had pulpal involvement. In two-thirds of cases the pattern of resorption involved both apical and middle thirds of the root. Despite the extensive nature of the involvement there were f

Extensive idiopathic external apical root resorption on a 13 year old child.

External root resorption in permanent teeth can occur as a result of a multitude of local and systemic factors. Root resorption that is idiopathic or occurring without any identifiable underlying cause is an unusual phenomenon, especially in children. This article describes a rare case of extensive external apical root resorption affecting multiple teeth and occurring concomitantly with localized periodontitis in a 13 year-old child. No significant systemic, local or familial findings could be identified as a plausible cause for the root resorption.
