Bilaminar technique in the treatment of a deep cervical abrasion defect.

New materials (restorative and adhesive) for the treatment of cervical abrasions have produced better results in terms of esthetics (choice and stability of colors) and duration (marginal fit and wear resistance). Nevertheless, conservative restoration of cervical abrasion cannot be considered the most suitable treatment in certain clinical situations: (1) when the abrasion defect involves the root surface, either exclusively or primarily; (2) when a site has difficult esthetic demands resulting from excessive tooth length with gingival recession; and (3) in the presence of root caries. The ai

Comparison of conventional film with different digital and digitally filtered images in the detection of simulated internal resorption cavities--an ex vivo study in human cadaver jaws.

OBJECTIVE: To determine observers' ability to detect experimentally induced simulated internal resorption cavities using conventional film, digital images and digitally filtered images. STUDY DESIGN: In the coronal plane, 11 single-rooted teeth with radiographically visible pulps were split in half. Four artificial internal resorptions were simulated in each tooth at the coronal, cervical, mid-root, and apical locations of the buccal/labial wall. Conventional and digital radiographs were taken from 3 different views in 4 steps. Three observers examined conventional, digital, and digitally fil

An overview of delayed passive eruption.

The condition of delayed or altered passive eruption exists in adults when the gingival unit remains positioned on the convex prominence of the enamel rather than at or in proximity to the cementoenamel junction. Treatment protocol is based on periodontal, esthetic, and prosthetic considerations. In addition, the gingival/osseous relationship becomes important for proper diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of this article is to increase awareness of the pathognomonic signs and symptoms of delayed passive eruption so that appropriate treatment can be rendered.

Alveolar bone height of primary and first permanent molars in healthy seven- to nine-year-old children.

The purpose of the study was to establish baseline values of the alveolar bone height of the primary molars and first permanent molars in sample of healthy U.S. seven- to nine-year-old children. Direct measurements of the distance from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) to the alveolar crest (AC) on 223 pairs of bitewing radiographs from 223 subjects were made using a digimatic caliper under standardized conditions. The distance from the CEJ to the AC had medians from 0.58 mm to 1.39 mm (range 0.0 to 4.44 mm) for the primary molars and from 0.00 mm to 0.64 mm (range -1.35 to 2.15 mm) for the mes

Expression of adhesion molecules during tooth resorption in feline teeth: a model system for aggressive osteoclastic activity.

Tooth resorption, a common feline dental problem, is often initiated at the cemento-enamel junction and hence is called cat 'neck' lesion. Studies have demonstrated that osteoclasts/odontoclasts are increased and activated at resorption sites, and that areas of resorption are partly repaired by formation of tissues resembling bone, cementum, and possibly dentin. However, the cellular/molecular mechanisms/factors involved in resorption and repair are unknown. In this study of tissues from cats with 'neck' lesions, we used specific antibodies and immunohistochemical analyses to examine adhesion

Cervical tooth wear and sensitivity: erosion, softening and rehardening of dentine; effects of pH, time and ultrasonication.

BACKGROUND: Cervical dentine wear is commonly observed and may be associated with dentine hypersensitivity. Erosion is thought to play a part in both conditions but compared to enamel has been little studied in dentine. AIM: The aims of these studies in vitro were to: (i) determine the effects of citric acid on dentine at different pH values and over time; (ii) measure the depth of dentine demineralisation or softening using ultrasonication; (iii) determine whether softened dentine can be remineralised or rehardened using artificial saliva. METHODS: Groups of flat dentine specimens prepared

Eruptive and functional changes in periodontal ligament fibroblast orientation in CD44 wild-type vs. knockout mice.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblasts establish principal fibers of the ligament during tooth eruption, and maintain these fibers during occlusion. PDL development and occlusal adaptation includes changes in the orientation of PDL fibroblasts; however, the mechanism for these changes in orientation is unclear. The objective of this study was to compare PDL fibroblast orientation in different stages corresponding with first molar eruption and occlusion in CD44 wild-type (WT) and knockout (KO) mice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: CD44 WT and KO mice were raised to six postnata

Nonsurgical Management of Horizontal Root Fracture with Necrotic Apical Segment and Coronal Cervical Abfraction using Mineral Trioxide Aggregate: Case Report.

Horizontal root fractures are relatively rare dental findings and often pose diagnostic and treatment challenges. In addition to a horizontal root fracture, this case report also demonstrates a finding of a noncarious cervical abfraction lesion, which involves the loss of dental hard tissue from the cervical areas of teeth through processes unrelated to caries. A 22 -year-old healthy female patient was complaining of the maxillary left first premolar area with a history of dental trauma. Clinically, the tooth presented with a noncarious cervical abfraction lesion. Endodontic testing showed a n

CCTV study of cemental annulations in determining the age from single tooth.

Cementum in human tooth is a hard tissue in its root deposited around dentin in layers throughout the life. Microscopically each layer is seen as a set of alternating dark and light bands and called as Cemental Annulations. Intact teeth obtained from subjects of either sex and of known ages processed by ground sectioning manually and mounted on a glass slide. The cemental annulations were then counted by light microscope using CCTV Screen, at the junction of cervical with middle third of root. Age was then determined by adding the eruption age in years of tooth in study to the annulations coun

Root resorption after leveling with super-elastic and conventional steel arch wires: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this prospective study was to compare root resorption after the leveling phase of treatment, performed by either super-elastic or conventional multi-stranded stainless steel arch wires. METHODS: From a total of 156 future orthodontic patients in a private clinic, 82 were included in the study after excluding those who earlier had orthodontic or endodontic treatment or signs of resorption. Patients were equally arbitrary allocated into two groups, where leveling was performed either with super-elastic heat-activated or conventional multi-stranded stainless steel arch wir

Periodontal attachment level of extractions presumably performed for periodontal reasons.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The aim of this study was to analyse the residual periodontal attachment in teeth extracted by East German dentists in order to determine a possible 'forceps level'. METHODS: Out of about 8000 extracted teeth collected from a dental waste disposal company, 500 teeth were randomly selected. After exclusion of wisdom teeth and premolars extracted for orthodontic reasons (intact teeth with attachment > 90%), coronal and root caries, fillings, pulp exposure and incomplete root fillings (based on X-rays) were registered. The periodontal ligament was stained with 1% Fuchsin Red and

CBCT Compared to Transgingival Probing as a Tool for Estimating Alveolar Bone Crest Level in Patients with Altered Passive Eruption.

OBJECTIVES: Alveolar bone crest level is essential in determining the need for bone removal in subjects with altered passive eruption (APE). This study assessed the validity of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and transgingival probing. METHODS: Patients presenting with APE were assessed. Transgingival probing was performed to clinically assess the distance between the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and the crest of the bone at the mid-point of upper anterior teeth. CBCT was used to assess this distance at the same point. Upon reflection of a full mucoperiosteal flap the actual distance was

A scanning electron microscopy study of idiopathic external tooth resorption in the cat.

BACKGROUND: Multiple idiopathic root resorption (MIRR) is a rare condition in man characterized by cervical resorption leading to significant tooth loss. A similar condition, feline osteoclastic resorptive lesions (FORL), affects up to 70% of domestic cats and thus provides a valuable model for investigating the etiopathogenesis of MIRR. The aim of the present study was to establish changes in the surface microanatomy of the tooth in late stage FORL and to identify whether its location has a surface bias. METHODS: Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the surface features of
