Incident Lung Cancer and Mortality: Data From Health ABC Using Periodontal Status and Tooth Loss.

AIM: To evaluate whether periodontal parameters and tooth loss are associated with lung cancer incidence and mortality among older adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data are from the Health, Aging and Body Composition (Health ABC) study, which included 1136 older adults who received a periodontal examination and were followed for up to 16 years. Pocket depth and clinical attachment level were assessed for all present teeth. Adjusted Cox regression models were used to examine the relationship between periodontal parameters and number of natural teeth with lung cancer incidence and mortality. RES…

Tooth loss in breast cancer patients: A comparison between tamoxifen-treated and non-treated patients.

BACKGROUND: Tooth loss (TL) affects quality of life and general health. The literature suggesting that tamoxifen treatment in patients with breast cancer (BC) could be associated with alterations in oral health, increasing the risk of TL, is still scarce. This work aimed to determine the relationship between TL and tamoxifen consumption in patients with BC. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study was carried out from July to September 2023 in the medical oncology services of the "Virgen de la Puerta" - ESSALUD High Complexity Hospital and "Dr. Luis Pinillos Ganoza" - IR…

Semaphorin 3A protects against alveolar bone loss during orthodontic tooth movement in mice with periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effect of local semaphorin 3A (Sema3A) administration on alveolar bone loss during OTM in a mouse model of periodontitis. BACKGROUND: Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) for patients with periodontal disease is known to increase the risk of exacerbating alveolar bone loss due to inflammation of the periodontal tissue. However, its mechanism of action and prevention remains unclear. METHODS: Mice (male 7-8 weeks old, C57BL/6J, n = 12) were divided into six groups: untreated group (control), without OTM and recovered from induced periodontitis (RP), with OTM

Association between alcohol dependence and both periodontal disease and tooth loss: a cross-sectional study.

The impact of alcohol consumption on periodontal disease and tooth loss is still under debate. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the association between alcohol dependence and both periodontal diseases and tooth loss in Brazilian native Indians. Full mouth periodontal examination was performed and tooth loss was clinically evaluated in a representative sample of 225 Indians (≥ 19 years). Sociodemographic, oral health-related data, and alcohol dependence were evaluated using structured questionnaires. The subjects were categorized as either alcohol-dependent or non-dependent…

Periodontal disease, tooth loss, and cancer risk in male health professionals: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that tooth loss and periodontal disease might increase the risk of developing various cancers; however, smoking might have confounded the reported associations. We aimed to assess whether periodontal disease or tooth loss is associated with cancer risk. METHODS: The analysis was done in a prospective study (the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study [HPFS]), which was initiated in 1986 when US male health professionals aged 40-75 years responded to questionnaires posted by the Department of Nutrition, Harvard University School of Public Health, Boston, MA, USA. In ad…

Etiologic aspects and orthodontic treatment of unilateral localized arrested tooth-development combined with hearing loss.

In this study a case has been presented involving localized, arrested maxillary tooth development, asymmetric maxillary development, and unilateral loss of hearing. No similar case seems to have been described before. The orthodontic treatment comprised extraction of four permanent tooth germs in the maxilla and autotransplantation of mandibular teeth, followed by the use of fixed orthodontic appliances and a one-unit bridge restoration. Etiologic aspects are discussed. It is suggested that a severe attack of mumps that involved massive swelling of the parotid glands immediately after chicken

The DentoNeural Axis: A Piezo channel-mediated mechanosensory pathway linking tooth loss to cognitive decline.

BACKGROUND: Two independent meta-analyses-one of 18 cohort studies (n = 356,297) and one dose-response analysis of 14 longitudinal studies (n = 34,074)-demonstrate dose-dependent associations between tooth loss and dementia. The latter reported hazard ratio (HR) 1.48 (95% CI 1.18-1.87) for cognitive impairment and HR 1.28 (95% CI 1.09-1.49) for dementia; the former reported relative risk (RR) 1.20 and 1.15 for the same outcomes. The 2024 Lancet Commission expanded modifiable dementia risk factors to 14 yet omitted oral health. The mechanism remains unknown. THE HYPOTHESIS: We propose the "Den…

Cotinine, trans-3'-hydroxycotinine, and nicotine metabolite ratio indicate association between smoking and tooth loss.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has indicated a potential connection between smoking and tooth loss, but it remains unclear how the metabolites of nicotine, cotinine (COT) and trans-3'-hydroxycotinine (HC), and the nicotine metabolite ratio (NMR) affect the occurrence and progress of tooth loss. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between tooth loss and smoking metabolites, then verify how the systemic immunoinflammatory index (SII) or monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) levels mediate this process. METHODS: The cross-sectional study data were collec…

Urinary total 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanonol is positively associated with tooth loss.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Epidemiological studies had confirmed a fundamental association between smoking and tooth loss, but it remains unclear whether metabolites of tobacco products such as total 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanonol (TNNAL) play a role in the incidence and progress of tooth loss. This study aims to investigate the relationship between TNNAL and tooth loss as well as how systemic inflammatory indexes mediate this process. METHODS: The cross-sectional study data were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in the United States. After sc…

How hidden is hidden hearing loss? Self-reported listening problems in charcot Marie tooth disease.

INTRODUCTION: Laboratory studies have revealed hidden hearing loss in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, the most prevalent inherited neuropathy, which may impact their quality of life. The current study distinguished between CMT type 1, which involves demyelination of the peripheral nerves, and type 2, which concerns dysfunction of peripheral nerves due to axonopathy. The self-reported effects were investigated of CMT1 and CMT2 on listening problems and related social and attentional problems in everyday communicative situations. METHODS: Data were collected from 42 CMT1 patien

Association of Tooth Loss with New-Onset Parkinson's Disease: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Tooth loss is associated with poor oral hygiene. During insufficient oral sanitation, focal infection and inflammation can occur and these reactions may induce systemic inflammation. Systemic inflammatory reaction may be related to the degeneration of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra. We hypothesized that tooth loss is related to increased risk of new-onset Parkinson's disease. METHODS: Between 2003 and 2006, we included 153,165 participants from the national health insurance system-health screening cohort in Korea. The incidence of new-onset Parkinson's disease was defi…

Maxillary sinus floor pneumatization and alveolar ridge resorption after tooth loss: a cross-sectional study.

This is a cross-sectional study that aimed to estimate maxillary sinus floor (MSF) pneumatization in single missing tooth of posterior maxil … resenting LSP obtained HR < 5 mm, which indicates sinus lift surgery. The present study showed that tooth loss in posterior maxilla favors sinus pneumatization and the identification of LSP at molar roots seems to indicate a greater necessity for sinus lift surgeries.

Severe tooth loss after root damage caused by predrilled intermaxillary fixation screw: a case report.

Intermaxillary fixation (IMF) with screws is routinely used as a conservative therapy or to obtain normal occlusion during the surgical procedure of open reduction and internal fixation for treating mandibular fractures. The risk of iatrogenic dental damage caused by interdental drilling is widely known. Several side effects are described, including loss of response to pulp sensibility testing, root fracture, and, loss of the tooth. This is a case report about a young man who had undergone temporary IMF treatment with a single proven root damage. The patient did not appear for follow-up but he

Loss of epithelial FAM20A in mice causes amelogenesis imperfecta, tooth eruption delay and gingival overgrowth.

FAM20A has been studied to a very limited extent. Mutations in human FAM20A cause amelogenesis imperfecta, gingival fibromatosis and kidney problems. It would be desirable to systemically analyse the expression of FAM20A in dental tissues and to assess the pathological changes when this molecule is specifically nullified in individual tissues. Recently, we generated mice with a Fam20A-floxed allele containing the beta-galactosidase reporter gene. We analysed FAM20A expression in dental tissues using X-Gal staining, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, which showed that the ameloblas
