Evaluation of a simplified oscillation technique for assessing airway obstruction in sleep apnoea.

The forced oscillation technique (FOT) is a noninvasive method that is useful for assessing airway obstruction and for titrating continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in patients with sleep apnoea. The aim was to evaluate the routine applicability of a simplified FOT set-up based on recording pressure and flow at the level of the CPAP device, i.e. obviating the need for connecting the transducers to the nasal mask. A correction to account for the tubing and the exhaust port was applied. This simplified FOT was evaluated on nine patients with moderate or severe sleep apnoea during routine

Intrauterine manometry: technique and application to fetal pathology.

A technique is described for measuring pressure within the amniotic cavity and within fetal vessels and/or body compartments. Two saline-filled catheters were connected at one end to needles inserted during indicated invasive procedures and at the other to silicon strain gauge transducers. In 36 pregnancies with normal liquor volume, stable intra-amniotic pressure (IAP, range 1-14 mmHg) increased with gestation (r = 0.48, p less than 0.01). In pregnancies complicated by severe oligohydramnios, IAP was less than or equal to 1 mm Hg and rose to normal levels with saline amnioinfusion. Raised IAP

An ultrasensitive multimodal intracranial pressure biotelemetric system enabled by exceptional point and iontronics.

The accurate monitoring of vital physiological parameters, exemplified by heart rate, respiratory rate, and intracranial pressure (ICP), is of paramount importance, particularly for managing severe cranial injuries. Despite the rapid development of implantable ICP sensing systems over the past decades, they still suffer from, for example, wire connection, low sensitivity, poor resolution, and the inability to monitor multiple variables simultaneously. Here, we propose an ultrasensitive multimodal biotelemetric system that amalgamates an iontronic pressure transducer with exceptional point (EP)

Performance analysis of the T-DOC® air-charged catheters: An alternate technology for urodynamics.

AIMS: Urodynamics (UDS) is widely used for the diagnosis of lower urinary tract dysfunction. Air-Charged catheters (ACC), one of the newer technologies for UDS pressure recording, has been adopted in growing numbers around the world for the past 15 years. Currently, there is a lack of published studies characterizing specific performance of the ACC. Since linearity, hysteresis, pressure drift, and frequency response are important components in characterizing accuracy for catheter-manometer systems; this study aimed to assess these four aspects in ACC. METHODS: A total of 180 T-DOC® ACC were u

A wheelchair cushion designed to redistribute sites of sitting pressure.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the diversity of wheelchair cushions currently in clinical use, pressure on bony prominences continues to be a major problem for wheelchair-bound patients, and the incidence of pressure ulcers remains high. No static surface has been reported to reduce resting pressure under the ischial tuberosities to below that of capillary pressure, which may well be the threshold for inducing tissue damage. An entirely new form of seating was designed to decrease absolute pressure using a prosthetic fitting technique analogous to a below-the-knee prosthesis. DESIGN: A repeated measures

Comparative study of air and water measurements of peak and stabilized static urethral pressures.

Air and water were forced through female dogs' urethras to determine static urethral pressures. The cauda equina was sectioned to eliminate reflex responses to urethral manipulation, and the urethras were compressed circumferentially with inflatable Silastic cuffs. The peak and stabilized urethral pressures were recorded at flow rates between 20 and 150 ml./min. while cuff pressures were varied between 0 and 100 cm. of water. When the fluid recordings of static urethral pressure were compared with Millar transducer tip catheter measurements of urethral pressure, there were no statistically sig

Pressure-induced basilar membrane position shifts and the stimulus-evoked potentials in the low-frequency region of the guinea pig cochlea.

We have used the guinea pig isolated temporal bone preparation to investigate changes in the non-linear properties of the tone-evoked cochlear potentials during reversible step displacements of the basilar membrane towards either the scala tympani or the scala vestibuli. The position shifts were produced by changing the hydrostatic pressure in the scala tympani. The pressures involved were calculated from measurements of the fluid flow through the system, and the cochlear DC impedance calculated (1.5 x 10(11) kg m-4 s-1, n = 10). Confocal microscopic visualization of the organ of Corti showed

Upper airway extraluminal tissue pressure fluctuations during breathing in rabbits.

Transmural pressure at any level in the upper airway is dependent on the difference between intraluminal airway and extraluminal tissue pressure (ETP). We hypothesized that ETP would be influenced by topography, head and neck position, resistive loading, and stimulated breathing. Twenty-eight male, New Zealand White, anesthetized, spontaneously breathing rabbits breathed via a face mask with attached pneumotachograph to measure airflow and pressure transducer to monitor mask pressure. Tidal volume was measured via integration of the airflow signal. ETP was measured with a pressure transducer-t

A system for producing controlled elevation of intraocular pressure in awake Brown Norway rats.

Animal models that help us understand how elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) causes axonal injury will lead to new glaucoma therapies. Because reliable measurements are difficult to obtain in chronic models, we developed the controlled elevation of IOP (CEI) approach. Here, a cannula connected to an elevated balanced salt solution (BSS) reservoir is inserted into the anterior chamber of anesthetized Brown Norway rats. The extent and duration of IOP exposure is controlled by adjusting the reservoir height. We now describe a method for creating CEI in awake animals. A Pinport, which has a silic

Biliary lithotripsy can be enhanced with proper ultrasound probe position.

We have demonstrated in our in vitro system that an extracorporeal lithotripter utilizing a movable ultrasound probe can fragment gallstones more effectively when the ultrasound probe is not partially blocking shock waves. Using a pressure transducer we measured the pressures in the focal volume of a Wolf Piezolith 2300 lithotripter with the ultrasound probe fully extended and fully retracted. We also chose 12 pairs of twin gallstones, each taken from the same gallbladder. One stone from each pair was subjected to shock waves while the ultrasound probe was fully extended and the other treated

A tri-coil bellows-type round window transducer with improved frequency characteristics for middle-ear implants.

A number of methods to drive the round window (RW) using a floating mass transducer (FMT) have been reported. This method has attracted attention because the FMT is relatively easy to implant in the RW niche. However, the use of an FMT to drive the RW has been proven to produce low outputs at frequencies below approximately 1 kHz. In this study, a new tri-coil bellows-type transducer (TCBT), which has excellent low frequency output and is easy to implant, is proposed. To design the frequency characteristics of the TCBT, mechanical and electrical simulations were performed, and then a comparati

Application of tensile load at the tympanic membrane by an eardrum-contact transducer.

Safety of hearing devices attached to the tympanic membrane depends on applied forces and resulting movements of the ossicles when pulling off the device. A robotized temporal bone measurement setup was designed to apply and measure defined pull-off forces and as well as the corresponding displacements of the round-window membrane via Laser-Doppler-vibrometry. Here, we investigate in five temporal bones the pull-off dynamics of the Vibrosonic Hearing Contact Lens® the silicone membrane of which being formed to match the tympanic-membrane shape of individual temporal bones. Hearing of the African lungfish (Protopterus annectens) suggests underwater pressure detection and rudimentary aerial hearing in early tetrapods.

In the transition from an aquatic to a terrestrial lifestyle, vertebrate auditory systems have undergone major changes while adapting to aerial hearing. Lungfish are the closest living relatives of tetrapods and their auditory system may therefore be a suitable model of the auditory systems of early tetrapods such as Acanthostega. Therefore, experimental studies on the hearing capabilities of lungfish may shed light on the possible hearing capabilities of early tetrapods and broaden our understanding of hearing across the water-to-land transition. Here, we tested the hypotheses that (i) lungfi

Effect of heel height on in-shoe localized triaxial stresses.

Abnormal and excessive plantar pressure and shear are potential risk factors for high-heeled related foot problems, such as forefoot pain, hallux valgus deformity and calluses. Plantar shear stresses could be of particular importance with an inclined supporting surface of high-heeled shoe. This study aimed to investigate the contact pressures and shear stresses simultaneously between plantar foot and high-heeled shoe over five major weightbearing regions: hallux, heel, first, second and fourth metatarsal heads, using in-shoe triaxial force transducers. During both standing and walking, peak pr

Splenic reflex modulation of central cardiovascular regulatory pathways.

The splenorenal reflex induces changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP) and renal function. We hypothesized that, in addition to spinal pathways previously identified, these effects are also mediated through central pathways. We investigated the effect of elevated splenic venous pressure on central neural activation in intact, renal-denervated, and renal + splenic-denervated rats. Fos-labeled neurons were quantified in the nucleus of the tractus solitarius (NTS), paraventricular nucleus (PVN), supraoptic nucleus (SON), and subfornical organ (SFO) after 1-h partial splenic vein occlusion (SVO) i

P0.1 during exercise in normal subjects breathing mixtures of gas with varying densities.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The aim of the study was to re-examine the occlusion pressure measured simultaneously in the mouth (P0.1) and the oesophagus (Poes.1) during exercise in normal subjects submitted to different gas mixtures. METHODS: 7 healthy men breathing random gas mixtures containing 21% oxygen with either by 79% helium (He-O2) or sulphur hexafluoride (SF6-O2) and room-air, were studied during a steady-state 90w exercise performed on a cyclo-ergometer. Ventilatory parameters were derived from the flow signal recorded by a pneumotachograph calibrated with the different gas mixtures. Three

The ANF-RGC gene motif (669)WTAPELL(675) is vital for blood pressure regulation: biochemical mechanism.

ANF-RGC is the prototype membrane guanylate cyclase, both the receptor and the signal transducer of the hormones ANF and BNP. After binding them at the extracellular domain, it, at its intracellular domain, signals activation of the C-terminal catalytic module and accelerates production of the second messenger, cyclic GMP. This, in turn, controls the physiological processes of blood pressure, cardiovascular function, fluid secretion, and others: metabolic syndrome, obesity, and apoptosis. The biochemical mechanism by which this single molecule controls these diverse processes, explicitly blood

Natriuretic Peptides as Cardiovascular Safety Biomarkers in Rats: Comparison With Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, and Heart Weight.

Cardiovascular (CV) toxicity is an important cause of failure during drug development. Blood-based biomarkers can be used to detect CV toxicity during preclinical development and prioritize compounds at lower risk of causing such toxicities. Evidence of myocardial degeneration can be detected by measuring concentrations of biomarkers such as cardiac troponin I and creatine kinase in blood; however, detection of functional changes in the CV system, such as blood pressure, generally requires studies in animals with surgically implanted pressure transducers. This is a significant limitation becau

Non-invasive measurement of intracranial pressure changes by otoacoustic emissions (OAEs)--a report of preliminary data.

Up to now changes of intracranial pressure can only be objectively assessed by invasive measurement tools e.g. epidural transducers or intraventricular or intraparenchymatous catheters. Changes of intracranial pressure (ICP) are known to influence the inner ear since the subarachnoid space is linked to the perilymphatic space of the inner ear via the cochlear aquaeduct. A new method for assessing cochlear disorders is based on otoacoustic emissions (OAE) which are generated by the outer hair cells (OHCs) of the inner ear. The aim of the present study was to find out whether changes of intracra

[Measurement of the intra abdominal pressure in clinical practice].

In recent years, significant interest has been observed in intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndromes. Intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) has been defined as a static pressure between organs in the abdominal cavity. Continuous or recurrent increase in the IAP above 12 mm Hg (1.6 kPa) is regarded as abdominal hypertension (IAH). Among the most common causes of IAH are massive fluid resuscitation after major injuries or burns, and ischemia of intestines after major vascular surgery. Abdominal compartment syndrome has been defined as a continuous intra-abdominal pressure above 2
