The prevalence of intestinal parasites in children living in an unincorporated area in rural northern Florida.

A survey was conducted to assess the prevalence of intestinal parasitism in 65 native-born preschool and school-age children living in an unincorporated area of northern Florida. Fifty-seven percent of the children were found to be infected with intestinal parasites. Sixty-eight percent of males surveyed and 47% of females had either single or multiple infections. Prevalence was greatest in the five-10-year-old age group. For the total child population surveyed, parasitic infections in order of most to least prevalent were ascariasis (32%); giardiasis (29%); trichuriasis (14%); and hookworm (2…

The parasitic diseases of school children in Lagos State, Nigeria.

A survey of 5,595 primary school children in Lagos State showed that most of the children were over-loaded with parasitic infestations which included malaria (37.7%), schistosomiasis (13.4%). ascariasis (74.2%), trichuriasis (75.8%), hookworm (29.5%) and tungiasis (49.5%). Multiple infections were observed with about 16.2% harbouring all the causative organisms of the parasitic diseases enumerated above. The high prevalence of parasitic infestations among these children is an index of the community's low level of health and also of inadequate health education, because most of these diseases ar…

A combined treatment regimen for Trichuris rhinopiptheroxella infection in Rhinopithecus roxellana in southern China.

The Sichuan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) is an endangered species in China and is susceptible to infection with Trichuris species. However, the worms are difficult to remove completely. A practical treatment regimen for trichuriasis was conducted over a seven-month period on 15 R. roxellana in a wildlife zoo in southern China. Initially, a combination of fecal examination, morphological observation, molecular identification of ITS1 and mitogenome, and infective pattern analysis revealed that R. roxellana was susceptible to Trichuris rhinopiptheroxella. Three rounds of treatment …

Trichuris trichiura (Linnaeus, 1771) From Human and Non-human Primates: Morphology, Biometry, Host Specificity, Molecular Characterization, and Phylogeny.

Human trichuriasis is a Neglected Tropical Disease, which affects hundreds of millions of persons worldwide. Several studies have reported that non-human primates (NHP) represent important reservoirs for several known zoonotic infectious diseases. In this context, Trichuris infections have been found in a range of NHP species living in natural habitats, including colobus monkeys, macaques, baboons, and chimpanzees. To date, the systematics of the genus Trichuris parasitizing humans and NHP is unclear. During many years, Trichuris trichiura was considered as the whipworm present in humans and p…

Suspected myelinolysis following rapid correction of hyponatremia in a dog.

A dog developed signs of neurological dysfunction five days after rapid correction of severe electrolyte derangements, including hyponatremia, caused by gastrointestinal parasitism (i.e., trichuriasis). History, laboratory findings, and onset of neurological signs following correction of hyponatremia led to a diagnosis of myelinolysis. Myelinolysis is a noninflammatory, demyelinating brain disease caused by sudden, upward osmotic shifts in central nervous system plasma, often a result of rapid correction of chronic hyponatremia. The pathogenesis is complex, but recovery is possible. Iatrogenic…

Treatment of Trichuris trichiura infection with a single dose of oxantel pamoate.

166 patients with trichuriasis have been treated at the Department of Tropical Diseases, Aurora Hospital, Helsinki, from January 1975 to October 1979. Final results could be confirmed in 141 patients. Thiabendazole was found discouraging, because of frequent side effects and low cure rate (29% of 24 in-patients). In contrast, a single dose of oxantel pamoate gave minimal side effects in 37 in-patients and in 80 outpatients with a high overall cure rate of 98%. Neither allergic nor adverse haematological reactions were encountered during 3 years and 10 months' experience of treatment with oxant…

Chronic diarrhea unveiled by colonoscopy.

A 62-year-old woman from Bogotá, Colombia, had chronic diarrhea for 4 years. The diarrhea was lienteric, occurring day and night, with mucus but no blood. She had no significant weight loss, abdominal pain, or other systemic symptoms, and no notable medical history. Initial stool tests showed leukocytes and blood but no parasites. Routine lab tests were normal. Due to the chronic symptoms and nocturnal diarrhea, a colonoscopy was performed. It revealed numerous mobile, white worms in the right colon, identified as Trichuris trichiura, causing friable mucosa. She was diagnosed with trichuriasis…

Oxantel-pyrantel pamoate for the treatment of soil-transmitted helminths.

A mixture of oxantel-pyrantel pamoate was given to 147 primary school children. A single daily dose of 15 mg per kg body weight was administered to cases with Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura infections. The same single daily dose was given for three consecutive days to 10 cases with hookworm infections. The cure rate was 93.7% for ascariasis and the egg reduction rate was 98.2%. A cure rate and an egg reduction rate for trichuriasis was 70.2% and 86.5% respectively. All cases with hookworm infection were cured. Side effects were light and did not cause any anxiety.

Mebendazole in treatment of severe Trichuris trichiura infection in Malaysian children.

Children with severe Trichuris trichiura infection pose significant social, clinical, and therapeutic problems in Malaysia. Thirty such children were investigated, and mebendazole was found to be safe and effective in the treatment of severe trichuriasis but it had to be given for a longer period than currently recommended. A poor correlation was found between egg load and worm burden in these children. Direct visualization of the rectal and colonic mucosa was the most reliable method of assessing severity in untreated cases, and response to treatment. The eggs of Trichuris that had been expos…

Trichuris trichiura Incidentally Detected by Colonoscopy and Identified by a Genetic Analysis.

Although trichuriasis, a zoonotic disease, has recently become rare in Japan due to improved environmental hygiene, we herein report a 79-year-old man in whom a worm was incidentally found in the ascending colon during colonoscopy for positive fecal occult blood and was endoscopically removed. A genetic analysis identified the worm as Trichuris trichiura possessing mixed sequences from non-human primate and human origins. Despite controversy regarding Trichuris trichiura infection originating from Japanese macaques, according to some studies, it originates primarily from humans. This report su…

Trends in parasitic diseases in the Republic of Korea.

In the Republic of Korea, cases of zoonotic, opportunistic and imported parasitoses are being detected increasingly. Vivax malaria disappeared in the late 1970s but re-emerged in 1993 and, currently, 1000-2000 cases occur annually. Brugian filariasis was endemic on offshore islands until 1990 but has now been eradicated. Soil-transmitted helminthiases (ascariasis, trichuriasis and hookworm infections) were highly prevalent until the 1970s but are now well controlled. However, food-borne trematode infections, such as clonorchiasis and intestinal trematodiases (including heterophyidiasis, echino…

[Clinical evaluation of ciclobendazole (C-C 2481) in the treatment of colonic helminth diseases].

A total of 105 patients with mild helminthiases have been treated with ciclobendazole, a benzimidazole derivative related to mebendazole. The treatment lasted 3 days. A group of 74 patients received 200 mg/day ciclobendazole while another 31 patients were given double this dose. The excretion rates achieved were very high at 84.2 and 83.3% respectively in trichuriasis and 93.3 and 100% respectively in ascariasis. In a relatively small number of cases of ankylostomiasis, the values were, however, considerable lower (38.5 and 20.0% respectively). Since ciclobendazole is well tolerated, there is …
