Overview of Cochrane systematic reviews for rehabilitation interventions in individuals with cerebral palsy: A mapping synthesis.

AIM: This overview of Cochrane systematic reviews (CSRs) reports on current evidence on the effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions for individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) and the quality of the evidence. METHOD: Following the inclusion criteria defined by the World Health Organization, all CSRs tagged in the Cochrane Rehabilitation database that were relevant for individuals with CP were included. A mapping synthesis was used to group outcomes and comparisons of included CSRs indicating the effect of rehabilitation interventions and the certainty of evidence. RESULTS: A total of eigh

Clinical Evolution of Tardive Cervical Dystonia from Antecollis to Retrocollis.

Tardive dystonia occurs after exposure, over months to years, to antipsychotics and other drugs that block dopaminergic receptors. Anterocollis is a rare form of cervical dystonia which is usually disabling for the patient. Here, we present the case of a 61-year-old woman with Alzheimer's dementia diagnosed eight years ago who was previously medicated with antipsychotics. Two years before admission, she was medicated with olanzapine. She presented to the emergency room with a sustained flexion posture of the neck that was difficult to feed. She had a marked and fixed anterocollis and severe ak

Interaction between anti-Alzheimer and antipsychotic drugs in modulating extrapyramidal motor disorders in mice.

Antipsychotics are often used in conjunction with anti-Alzheimer drugs to treat the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Here, we examined the effects of cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEIs), donepezil and galantamine, on antipsychotic-induced extrapyramidal side effects (EPS) in mice. The effects of serotonergic agents on the EPS drug interaction were also evaluated. Donepezil (0.3-3 mg/kg) did not induce EPS signs by itself; however, it significantly potentiated bradykinesia induction with a low dose of haloperidol (0.5 mg/kg) in dose-dependent and synergistic manners. [Etiology and clinical aspects of palatal myoclonus].

Palatal myoclonus is a movement disorder consisting of rhythmic myoclonus of the soft palate, pharynx, larynx, and other muscles derived from the embryonal branchial arches. These movements are continuous and involuntary, and the patients are, in general, unaware of them. In the majority of patients, palatal myoclonus persists for life. In oculopalatal myoclonus, the eyes can be involved in the form of a nystagmus. Often a clicking noise in one or both ears is the initial symptom which can be heard by the examiner. A variety of etiologies have been linked to palatal myoclonus. The most common

Use of electroconvulsive therapy for schizophrenia with comorbid Marfan syndrome.

The study of psychiatric disorders co-occurring with rare genetic syndromes has important therapeutic and pathophysiological implications. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in schizophrenia with comorbid Marfan syndrome is challenging in view of multiorgan involvement. We report successful use of ECT in a patient who presented to us with catatonia and Marfan syndrome. The report highlights the importance of careful evaluation of patients with schizophrenia and Marfan syndrome before ECT in liaison with other specialties.

Simultaneous determination of cyclodol and diprazin by thin layer chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography.

Ciklodol (trihexyphenidil)--the central and peripheral m-cholinoblocker is currently used with other antipsychotic drugs such as phenotiazines and tricycle antidepressants. For the purpose of simultaneous determination of ciklodol and diprazine, were selected two methods of analysis: Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). During development of TLC method was studied the 10 visualizing system and 24 mobile systems. For individual or simultaneous determination of ciklodol and diprazine were recommended the following solvents' systems: 1. Toluene-aceton

Hemichorea associated with non-ketotic hyperglycemia: a case report and literature review.

Hemichorea associated with non-ketotic hyperglycemia (HC-NH) is a rare neurological complication and is also considered a specific complication of diabetes. Its exact pathogenesis remains unclear. We report a case of a 79-year-old female patient with HC-NH. Her primary clinical presentation included involuntary movements in the right limbs that began 3 days prior to admission. These movements worsened during emotional agitation and could be accompanied by insomnia but resolved after falling asleep. Imaging studies revealed no significant intracranial lesions on CT. MRI showed hyperintensity on

TREX-1 related Aicardi-Goutières syndrome improved by Janus kinase inhibitor.

Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS) is a genetic interferonopathy classically characterized by early onset of severe neurologic injury with basal ganglia calcifications, white matter abnormalities, and progressive cerebral atrophy, along with lymphocytosis and raised interferon alpha (INFα) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Here, we report a 31/2 year-old patient born with prenatal onset AGS, first manifesting as intra-uterine growth retardation. Cranial ultrasonography and cerebral MRI revealed ventriculomegaly and periventricular and basal ganglia calcifications, along with cerebral atrophy. Pe

Analyzing gene expression profiles in dilated cardiomyopathy via bioinformatics methods.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by ventricular dilatation, and it is a common cause of heart failure and cardiac transplantation. This study aimed to explore potential DCM-related genes and their underlying regulatory mechanism using methods of bioinformatics. The gene expression profiles of GSE3586 were downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus database, including 15 normal samples and 13 DCM samples. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified between normal and DCM samples using Limma package in R language. Pathway enrichment analysis of DEGs was then performed. Me

Which psychoactive prescription drugs are illegally obtained and through which ways of acquisition? About OPPIDUM survey.

The objective of the study was to determine which psychoactive prescription drugs are illegally obtained and through which ways of acquisition. OPPIDUM is an annual national study. It is based on specialized care centers that included subjects presenting a drug dependency or under opiate maintenance treatment. All their psychoactive substances consumed are reported. This work focuses on the different ways of acquisition specially the illegal ways of acquisition (bought on the street, forged prescription, stolen, given, internet). For each medication illegally obtained, a ratio has been calcula

Adjunctive treatment of acute mania with risperidone versus typical antipsychotics: a retrospective study.

Few studies have directly compared atypical antipsychotics (e.g. risperidone) with typical antipsychotics as adjunctive therapy in patients hospitalized for acute mania, especially during a lengthy hospital stay. Our retrospective, case-controlled study is a chart review of 64 patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition, defined bipolar I disorder (current episode, mania). Patients were divided into two groups according to the adjunctive medications used: the risperidone group (mood stabilizers plus risperidone) and the control group (mood stabilizers plus

[Treatment of blepharospasm with botulinum toxin].

Blepharospasm is a relatively frequent cranial dystonia which may be seen either alone or related to orofacial-mandibular dystonia (Meige's syndrome). In its maximum degree it can cause functional blindness.Twelve patients with blepharospasm (4 essential and 8 Meige's syndrome) who had been previously treated unsuccessfully with drugs (trihexyphenidyl, biperiden, carbamazepine, lithium, baclofen, lisuride, imipramine, clonazepam and butyrophenones) were treated for 12 months with periocular injections of botulinum toxin (BOTOX). A "low" dose of 12,5 U per eye was employed. With this dose, elev

[Status of microhemodynamics and features of capillary permeability in schizophrenia].

Using a complex of physiological methods developed by the author the initial state of bilateral permeability of the capillaries, the supply of tissues with blood through the capillaries, and the character of changes of those parameters in the conditions of the adaptational activity of microcirculation in schizophrenic patients were studied. It has been found that three types of microcirculation disturbances leading to tissue hypoxia can be distinguished in schizophrenia depending on the process type and stage. The types of the capillary permeability disturbances in various forms of the schizop

Skeletal muscle necrosis following membrane-active drugs plus serotonin.

Administration of imipramine plus serotonin (5-HT) to rats has been proposed as an animal model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. We studied the skeletal muscle necrosis produced in male rats given 5-HT after pretreatment with imipramine, other tricyclic antidepressants, or antihistamines, which like the tricyclic antidepressants, can block neuronal reuptake of 5-HT. Following one of these agents plus 5-HT, 20 mg/kg subcutaneously (s.c.), necrosis was more severe in the soleus muscle than the quadriceps. There was no significant difference in the incidence of necrosis in the soleus and quadricep

Spanish consensus statement on the diagnosis and treatment of sialorrhoea in children with cerebral palsy.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior sialorrhoea, or "drooling," is the involuntary loss of saliva due to an inability to manage oral secretions. In cerebral palsy (CP), drooling results from oral motor dysfunction, significantly impacting the quality of life of both patients and their caregivers. Despite its physical and psychological repercussions, the clinical approach to sialorrhoea remains poorly defined. OBJECTIVES: This document aims to provide a guideline for the evaluation and management of sialorrhoea in children with CP, based on the best available evidence and expert consensus. Additionally, it

Lower limb involvement in adult-onset primary dystonia: frequency and clinical features.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Despite the growing number of reports describing adult-onset primary lower limb dystonia (LLD) this entity has never been systematically evaluated in the general population of patients with primary adult-onset dystonia. METHODS: From outpatients with adult-onset primary dystonia attending nine Italian University centres for movement disorders we consecutively recruited 579 patients to undergo a standardized clinical evaluation. RESULTS: Of the 579 patients assessed, 11 (1.9%) (8 women, 3 men) had LLD, either alone (n = 4, 0.7%) or as part of a segmental/multifocal dys

Early-Onset Parkinson's Disease in a 36-Year-Old Woman with Uncomplicated Vaginal Birth: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder that is rare in women of reproductive age, with limited literature describing pregnancy outcomes. Clinical management during gestation requires balancing symptom control with medication safety, while delivery planning should consider both neurological and obstetric factors. CASE ILLUSTRATION: A 36-year-old woman, G4P3A0, at 36-37 weeks of gestation, presented with regular uterine contractions starting two hours prior to hospital admission. She had a 4-year history of Parkinson's disease and was on regular treatment w

Parkinson disease treatments on national essential medicines lists, African Region.

The prevalence of Parkinson disease is increasing globally. Despite the existence of effective and affordable medicines for Parkinson disease, access to these medicines is limited in the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region. Several factors influence accessibility, including lack of prioritization of Parkinson disease, shortage of a trained health workforce, barriers to health financing and lack of inclusion of medicines in national essential medicines lists. We determined alignment of the most recent national essential medicines lists of 47 countries in the WHO African Region with t
