The international journal of tuberculosis and lung disease : the official journal of the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease2002eng
OBJECTIVE: To compare the characteristics of patients with pulmonary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis and to describe the organ involvement, diagnosis and treatment of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients with a diagnosis of tuberculosis treated by the Hong Kong Government Tuberculosis and Chest Service (Chest Service) in 1996 were studied.
RESULTS: Of the 5757 patients treated, 13.7% had extra-pulmonary tuberculosis alone and 8.6% had both extra-pulmonary tuberculosis and pulmonary tuberculosis. Extra-pulmonary tuberculosis was more common in women under 30 and

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is a great public health concern. Disseminated tuberculosis carries a high mortality. Polyneuropathy is a rare but serious complication in patients with tuberculosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 26-year-old female who presented with shortness of breath, anorexia, nausea, black stools, hoarseness, generalized weakness, and progressively worsening skin tingling sensation in the bilateral lower extremities. The patient rapidly developed respiratory failure, and required endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation. Severe disseminated tuberculosis was diagnosed,

Intestinal tuberculosis (TB) typically presents with gastrointestinal symptoms, and cardiac conduction abnormalities associated with isolated intestinal TB have rarely been reported. We describe a 37-year-old male presenting with abdominal pain, constipation, and significant weight loss, with epidemiological exposure to cattle and raw milk. During hospitalization, he developed sinus bradycardia with a lowest corrected heart rate of approximately 46 beats per minute. The bradycardia persisted despite treatment with propantheline and atropine. Colonoscopy revealed terminal ileitis, and histopath

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic intestinal inflammatory disorder, the etiology of which remains unknown, and is characterized by symptoms such as chronic abdominal pain, diarrhea, obstruction, and perianal lesions. Histopathology is widely regarded as the preferred method for diagnosing CD, although the histological diagnosis may lack specificity. The identification of granulomas is commonly believed to be the most reliable diagnostic indicator for CD, surpassing all other clinical features in significance. Nevertheless, research indicates that the detection rate of granulomas in

Two cases of specific tubercular processes in the ceco-appendicular zone and the urinary system in men aged 25 and 30 years are described. Both patients reported abdominal pain and persistent fever that did not respond to treatment. Surgery revealed ulcerated appendix, intraperitoneal serous exudate, ascitic liquid, peritoneal ulcerocaseous nodules, and fibrous adhesions. Histological sections revealed a tubercular puchet in the ceco-appendicular zone. Subsequent x-ray test in response to reports of frequent painful urination showed specific lesions in the papillae and renal ureteral ampullae,

The significance of gut microbiota in human health is well recognized, yet its effects on pulmonary infectious diseases like tuberculosis (TB) are not thoroughly comprehended. While anti-TB drugs and preventive strategies are indispensable, the incorporation of adjunct therapies, including probiotics and their bioactive compounds, could provide potential biotherapeutic benefits. This review strives to collate the recent experimental and clinical investigations into the manipulation of the gut microbiome through probiotics, exploring their potential to sustain eubiosis, enhance recovery from TB

Abdomen is involved in 11% of patients with extra-pulmonary tuberculosis; The most common site of involvement is the ileocaecal region, other locations of involvement, in order of descending frequency, are the ascending colon, jejunum, appendix, duodenum, stomach, oesophagus, sigmoid colon, and rectum. Apart from the basic work up, Investigations like CT scan, EUS, Capsule endoscopy, Balloon enteroscopy, Ascitic fluid ADA, TB-PCR, GeneXpert, Laproscopy are being increasingly used to diagnose tuberculosis.Therapy with standard antituberculous drugs is usually highly effective for intestinal TB.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to elucidate the profile of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with second-line anti-tubercular treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: ADR profile of diagnosed drug-resistant tuberculosis cases on supervised second-line anti-tubercular drug regimen under Programmatic Management of Drug-resistant Tuberculosis under Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme, were studied over two years' period. Adverse reactions were categorised into mild, moderate and severe types with subsequent systematic data-analysis.
RESULTS: Out o

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) has plagued humanity for tens of thousands of years, yet still remains a threat to human health. Its pathology is largely associated with pulmonary tuberculosis with symptoms including fever, hemoptysis, and chest pain. Mtb, however, also manifests in other extrapulmonary organs, such as the pleura, bones, gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system, and lymph nodes. Compared to the knowledge of pulmonary tuberculosis, extrapulmonary pathologies of Mtb are quite understudied. Lymph node tuberculosis is one of the most common extrapulmonary manifestations of

Blastocystis hominis and nonpathogenic enteric protozoa were diagnosed in 300 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis mainly of its infiltrative form and 500 with Stages II and III HIV infection; the patients received antituberculosis therapy (ATT) and antiretroviral therapy (ART), respectively. Control groups included 200 Tashkent dwellers and 350 patients with various noninfectious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Triple coproscopy was made. B. hominis was significantly more frequently detected in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and those with HIV infection than in healthy individua

Tuberculosis in children involves many organs and systems including lymphatics, lungs, CNS, GIT and genitourinary. Although the mainstay of treatment is medical, surgery has a definite role under specific circumstances. It is important to differentiate atypical mycobacterial infection wherein surgery is the primary modality of treatment. The lung is most commonly involved in tuberculosis and besides bronchoscopy, thoracic procedures range from tube thoracostomy to decortication and lung resection. Neurotuberculosis constitutes almost half the cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis and tuberculou

BACKGROUND: Primary duodenal tuberculosis is very rare. Due to a lack of specificity for its presenting symptoms, it is easily misdiagnosed clinically. Review of the few case reports and literature on the topic will help to improve the overall understanding of this disease and aid in differential diagnosis to improve patient outcome.
CASE SUMMARY: A 71-year-old man with a 30-plus year history of bronchiectasis and bronchitis presented to the Gastroenterology Department of our hospital complaining of intermittent upper abdominal pain. Initial imaging examination revealed a duodenal space-occup

Tuberculous enteritis is a clinical rarity even in immunocompromised patients. We present a case of miliary tuberculosis with gastrointestinal involvement. A 47-year-old homosexual male from Philippines with no significant medical history presented with productive cough, night sweats, subjective fevers, shortness of breath, watery diarrhea, and 25-pound weight loss in past one year. On physical exam he was afebrile, mildly hypotensive, tachycardic, and tachypneic, but saturating well on room air. He was cachectic with oral thrush and bilateral fine rales. Chest X-ray revealed a miliary pattern
