Focused ultrasound in veterinary medicine.

The rising global pet population and increased integration of pets into households over the past five years have significantly increased veterinary caseloads, contributing to higher rates of veterinarian burnout. This has highlighted that current treatment options for pets often fail to support clinical efficiency and animal welfare as they are often high in cost, ineffective, induce adverse side effects, and require excessive time to treat and manage disease. Focused ultrasound is an emerging non-invasive therapeutic technology that addresses these limitations by reducing treatment time, side

Breaking Barriers With Sound: Focused Ultrasound in the Brain.

Focused ultrasound (FUS) is rapidly redefining the landscape of brain therapy, offering a noninvasive, highly precise alternative to traditional neurosurgical techniques. Enabled by advances in phased-array transducer technology, MRI-guided targeting and thermometry, and sophisticated treatment planning software, FUS delivers sub-millimeter accuracy through the skull while sparing surrounding tissue. This article provides a comprehensive yet accessible overview of the core technologies that make FUS possible, including phase correction for skull variability and real-time imaging for safety. We

Guided Waves in the Skull.

Skull bone is the main obstacle for transcranial ultrasound therapy and imaging applications. Most efforts in characterizing ultrasonic properties of the skull have been limited to a narrow frequency range and normal incidence. On the other hand, acoustic guided waves in plates have been used in non-destructive evaluation of materials and also to assess the strength of long bones. Recent work has likewise revealed the existence of skull-guided waves (SGWs) in mice and humans when performing measurements over a broad range of frequencies and incidence angles. Here we provide an overview on the

Traditional Multiwell Plates and Petri Dishes Limit the Evaluation of the Effects of Ultrasound on Cells In Vitro.

Ultrasound accelerates healing in fractured bone; however, the mechanisms responsible are poorly understood. Experimental setups and ultrasound exposures vary or are not adequately characterized across studies, resulting in inter-study variation and difficulty in concluding biological effects. This study investigated experimental variability introduced through the cell culture platform used. Continuous wave ultrasound (45 kHz; 10, 25 or 75 mW/cm2, 5 min/d) was applied, using a Duoson device, to Saos-2 cells seeded in multiwell plates or Petri dishes. Pressure field and vibration quantification

Effect of Ultrasound Pulse Length on Sonoreperfusion Therapy.

In recent years, long- and short-pulse ultrasound (US)-targeted microbubble cavitation (UTMC) has been found to increase perfusion in healthy and ischemic skeletal muscle, in pre-clinical animal models of microvascular obstruction and in the myocardium of patients presenting with acute myocardial infarction. There is evidence that the observed microvascular vasodilation is driven by the nitric oxide pathway and purinergic signaling, but the time course of the response and the dependency on US pulse length are not well elucidated. Because our prior data supported that sonoreperfusion efficacy i

Intravascular forward-looking ultrasound transducers for microbubble-mediated sonothrombolysis.

Effective removal or dissolution of large blood clots remains a challenge in clinical treatment of acute thrombo-occlusive diseases. Here we report the development of an intravascular microbubble-mediated sonothrombolysis device for improving thrombolytic rate and thus minimizing the required dose of thrombolytic drugs. We hypothesize that a sub-megahertz, forward-looking ultrasound transducer with an integrated microbubble injection tube is more advantageous for efficient thrombolysis by enhancing cavitation-induced microstreaming than the conventional high-frequency, side-looking, catheter-m

The use of high frequency waves to treat onychomycosis: preliminary communication of three cases.

The research evaluated the efficacy of high frequency waves in the treatment of onychomycosis in three patients during twelve months through the clinical examination of nails and also through mycological examination. The causative agent of the mycosis, in the three patients, was the dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum and after application of high frequency, it was possible to notice a great improvement in the appearance of nails and also growth inhibition in culture despite the fact that the mycological examination remained positive. The preliminary study of the three cases demonstrated that the

Laparoscopic resection of a noncommunicating, rudimentary uterine horn using the harmonic scalpel: a report of 3 cases.

BACKGROUND: Noncommunicating, rudimentary uterine horns are often removed to prevent potential pregnancy complications or to treat patients who develop pain from functional endometrium within the horn. Historically, these have been removed via laparotomy. Recently, resections of noncommunicating uterine horns have been performed laparoscopically using many different devices. We report 3 patients who underwent laparoscopic resection using the harmonic scalpel. CASES: Three patients were diagnosed with this condition at our institution between 2000 and 2003. All underwent laparoscopic resection

Management of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome affects approximately 3 percent of adults in the United States. Pain and paresthesias in the distribution of the median nerve are the classic symptoms. While Tinel's sign and a positive Phalen's maneuver are classic clinical signs of the syndrome, hypalgesia and weak thumb abduction are more predictive of abnormal nerve conduction studies. Conservative treatment options include splinting the wrist in a neutral position and ultrasound therapy. Orally administered corticosteroids can be effective for short-term management (two to four weeks), but local corticosteroid injec

The use of external ultrasound combined with superficial subdermal liposuction.

Superficial subdermal liposuction (SSL) was presented by the authors as an evolution in traditional liposuction in 1989. It allows one to treat the superficial fat to obtain better skin retraction during every liposuction procedure. The use of ultrasound (US) in liposuction began 10 years ago as the direct application of this energy to the adipose tissue using a probe to obtain the selective destruction of fat, followed by its aspiration. This technique gave rise to many complications and thus many concerns. The external delivery of US has been proposed to overcome some of the drawbacks associ

[Non-surgical therapy of impotence: infiltration, iontophoresis, ultrasound, laser].

Surgical therapy is the only useful correction in congenital fibrosis or in hypoplasia of the 'corpora cavernosa', associated with hypospadia or not. On the contrary in not congenital fibrosis of the 'corpora cavernosa' (Peyronie's disease, consequences of priapism, or trauma, complications of pharmaco-prosthesis) are allowed pharmaco-physical treatments (infiltrations, ionophoresis, ultrasound, laser). Pharmaco-physical therapy can be used as the only treatment, which is often resolutive, but it is also useful before or after the surgical operation of the 'corpora cavernosa'. These diseases c

[Neurologic component and resulting therapeutic concept of patellar chondropathy and chondromalacia].

Observations of nerve root lesions in spontaneous peripatellar pain led to new aspects concerning the etiology of periarticular pain and chondromalacia patellae. We regard the spontaneous peripatellar pain as an enthesiopathia resulting from an innervation disorder. We believe that also chondromalacia can be caused by nerve root lesions. As a consequence, a change in conservative and operative management is necessary. The aim is a balanced gliding and rotational stability of the patella. This means a muscular compensation of the weakened muscle part and stabilisation of the lumbar and hip regi

Application potential of therapeutic ultrasound in oral diseases.

PURPOSE: To review the literature on the application potential of ultrasound in the treatment of various oral and dental diseases. METHODS: Two reviewers carried out a computer-based literature search using PubMed and Web of Science to identify papers published up to February 2025. The keywords used in the investigation were "therapeutic ultrasound", " low-intensity pulsed ultrasound", and various words related to oral and dental disease (oral submucosal fibrosis, burning mouth syndrome, periodontitis, orthodontic tooth movement, and tooth trauma or caries). RESULTS: Therapeutic ultrasound,
