BACKGROUND: Large-bore arteriotomy for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) requires percutaneous vascular closure devices, but real-world data comparing different closure strategies are limited.
AIMS: We sought to compare a dual ProGlide strategy vs a combination of one ProGlide and one FemoSeal for vascular closure after TAVI.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 874 propensity score-matched patients undergoing TAVI at the Munich University Hospital from August 2018 to October 2020. From August 2018 to August 2019, a dual ProGlide strategy was used for vascular closure. From Octo…

Device migration is one of serious complications in neonates and infants undergoing transcatheter closure of the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). We hypothesize that neonates and young infants possess the distensibility of the ductus, which may be related to device migration. We retrospectively reviewed angiographic findings in 41 neonates and infants who underwent transcatheter closure of PDA. We measured diameters of the ductus at the pulmonary (PA) side, the center, and the aortic (AO) side before PDA closure, and the device center diameter after device closure. The distensibility index was

Surgical treatment of various septal defects has been long established. With the advances in transcatheter therapy dilatation techniques for valvular stenosis and vascular obstruction have become established procedures. Closure of septal defects in the catheterization laboratory has also been introduced; some of these have come into regular use in current practice. In 1967, Porstmann et al reported the use of Ivalon plug to close patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Since then, several devices have been used including Rashkind PDA ocluder (not being used now), Gianturco coils, detachable coils (for

Despite advances in device closure for atrial septal defect (ASD), post-closure heart failure observed in adult patients remains a clinical problem. Although right heart volume overload is the fundamental pathophysiology in ASD, the post-closure heart failure characterized by acute pulmonary congestion is likely because of age-related left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, which is manifested by acute volume loading with ASD closure. Aging also appears to play important roles in the pathophysiology of heart failure through several mechanisms other than diastolic dysfunction, including ventric

The Occlunix® septal occluder (OSO) is a new generation double disk occluder device for catheter closure of the secundum atrial septal defect (ASD). Fifty-six consecutive patients who underwent ASD device closure with the OSO between February 2022 and April 2024 were evaluated in this single-center observational study. All procedures were done under transesophageal echocardiography guidance. The OSO was successfully deployed in all patients (technical success 100%). Fifty-five patients had complete closure of the intervened ASD after device closure (procedural success 98.2%). The sole patient

Nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most frequent arrhythmia with a prevalence of 1%-2% in the general population. Its prevalence increases with age and its diagnosis benefits of improvement and simplification of technologies for its detection. Today, AF affects approximately 7% of individuals age>65years and 15%-20% of octogenarians. Due to stasis and activation of coagulation in a fibrillating atrium, patients are at increased risk of thromboembolism, in particular ischemic stroke, with an overall stroke risk of 5% per year. Since the left atrium itself is round and smooth-walled, th

Aortopulmonary window is a rare congenital heart disease occurring in 0.2-0.6% of all patients with congenital heart disease. It is usually nonrestrictive and is conventionally treated surgically at an early age to prevent the development of pulmonary vascular obstructive disease. In 10% of the patients, it is restrictive and case reports of its percutaneous closure are mostly limited to these patients. We report percutaneous device closure of nonrestrictive AP window in a 4 months old, 4 kg child. To the best of our knowledge this is the youngest child to have undergone percutaneous device cl

OBJECTIVE: Use of percutaneous suture closure devices after catheter-based interventions is increasing. We recently have seen several severe femoral arterial wall infections after use of such devices. The purpose of this study was to examine the incidence, comorbid associations, and management of femoral arterial infections associated with percutaneous suture closure devices.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all infectious complications that occurred after 2223 consecutive cardiac catheterization procedures performed over 12 months in a university-affiliated community teaching hospital. O

Fully percutaneous transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TF-TAVR) is currently the standard of the catheter-based treatment of severe aortic stenosis patients. Even though experience, lower delivery catheters profile and improved vascular closure devices performances have resulted in an overall reduction of both vascular and bleeding complications after TAVR, femoral pseudoaneurysm due to incomplete local hemostasis may occur, prolonging the in-hospital length of stay, causing discomfort to the patient and potentially evolving in serious consequences affecting the outcome. We re…

Various devices have been used for the percutaneous closure of fenestration and baffle leak associated with Fontan operation. We describe a 14-year-old male who had presented with increasing cyanosis and effort limitation following lateral tunnel Fontan operation. Apart from a fenestration in the lateral tunnel, there was an unusual baffle leak leading to significant right-to-left shunt. Following a test occlusion of the leak, an Amplatzer vascular plug was successfully used to occlude it, which resulted in significant improvement in systemic oxygen saturation. The advantages and disadvantages

When treating perimembranous ventricular septal defect, median sternotomy leads to unsightly scar, right subaxillary thoracotomy requires cardiopulmonary bypass, and transcatheter device closure constrained by vascular condition. Using small left intercostal incision, we employed transthoracic device closure to get around these issues. During this study, right subaxillary thoracotomy was used for surgical repair in 117 patients (Surgical group), whereas small left intercostal incision was used for transthoracic device closure in 131 patients (Device group). Retrospective data collection and an

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a deadly congenital disease in dogs if left untreated. Occlusion of the defect is the treatment of choice and can be achieved by surgical ligation or interventional closure. In this retrospective study of 16 dogs, an alternative to the classically used canine device which is placed by an arterial route is described. The Amplatzer Vascular Plug II® (AVPII) can be deployed by a transvenous approach, using a modified and simplified technique using a single catheter to perform angiography and device delivery. This allows the percutaneous treatment of smaller dogs

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter device closure of atrial septal defects (ASD) is an alternative to surgery, but experience is limited in adults, especially in those with large (> 26 mm) defects.
HYPOTHESIS: We investigated the safety, efficacy, and learning curve for closure of ASD and patent foramen ovale (PFO) using the Amplatzer device.
METHODS: In all, 101 procedures were carried out in 100 consecutive adult patients in a single cardiac center between July 1998 and August 2002.
RESULTS: Preprocedure diagnosis was ASD and PFO in 50 patients each. A device was deployed in 94 of 101 attempts (93

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Percutaneous closure of paravalvular leakage is an alternative to surgery in high-risk patients, but its use has been limited by a lack of specific devices. More appropriate devices-like the Amplatzer Vascular Plug III-have recently been developed, but information about their efficacy and safety is still scarce. The objective of the present study was to assess the mid-term results of paravalvular leakage closure with this device.
METHODS: We analyzed the clinical and echocardiographic course both in-hospital and mid-term (13 [9] months) in a series of 20 consecuti

OBJECTIVES: Surgical cut-down is commonly used for femoral cannulation in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, but is associated with higher rates of wound healing disorders. Percutaneous cannulation using vascular closure devices offers a less invasive alternative with potentially fewer complications. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and safety of using a single ProGlide system for primary access-site closure in comparison with surgical cut-down. Additionally, we analysed the learning curve for adopting this strategy.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 753 p…

OBJECTIVE: Amplatzer (AGA Medical Corporation, Plymouth, Minn) septal and vascular occluder devices have significantly altered the care of patients with congenital heart disease. The relative frequency and consequence of complications resulting from the attempted placement of such devices, however, have not been well assessed. The purpose of this study is to use large databases to assess the frequency and severity of such complications and compare them with those of surgical atrial septal defect closure.
METHODS: The US Food and Drug Administration Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experi

Data involving suture-based percutaneous vascular closure devices (VCDs) have been extensive. Although promising, data regarding the efficacy and safety of the MANTA VCD (Teleflex) are scarce. We sought to assess the safety and effectiveness of the MANTA device in a real-life unselected cohort of patients undergoing transfemoral-TAVR (TF-TAVR).
