BACKGROUND: Calcium channel blockers potentiate the effects of local anaesthetics. We examined the effect of adding verapamil to local anaesthetic solution on anaesthetic duration in patients undergoing surgery under brachial plexus block.
METHODS: This study was a prospective, randomized, controlled, double blind study. Sixty patients undergoing elective upper limb surgery were divided into two groups of 30 each. Group A received 40 ml of 1% lignocaine with 0.25% bupivacaine, while Group B patients had 2.5 mg verapamil added.

Verapamil and gynipral administered to pregnant rats in doses on a clinical level suppress the uterine contractions, which is manifested by a decrease in the amplitude and frequency of the biopotential. The joint administration of gynipral and verapamil (in half doses) resulted in a pronounced tocolytic effect.

Recent reports indicate that calmodulin inhibitors (CIs) can modify cadmium (Cd) toxicity in rodents. Pretreatment with CIs prevents Cd-induced testicular damage in mice and reduces the severity of such damage in rats. In previous work, we have shown that the chronic administration of verapamil, a calcium channel blocker, ameliorated the mortality, pathology, and biochemical alterations associated with acute murine Chagas' disease. The efficacy of verapamil in the conversion of 47 episodes of supraventricular tachycardia in 22 children was evaluated. The age of the patients ranged from 15 days to 10 years.
