Central Obesity-related Brain Alterations Predict Cognitive Impairments in First Episode of Psychosis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Cognitive impairment is a key contributor to disability and poor outcomes in schizophrenia, yet it is not adequat … ate (BrainAGE) as our measure of neurostructural changes and assessed attention, working memory and verbal learning using Digit Span and the Auditory Verbal Learning Test. STUDY RESULTS: Among obesity/metabolic markers, only WHR significantly predicted both, higher BrainAGE (t(281)=2.53, p=0.012) and worse verbal learning (t(290) = -2.51, P = .026). The associat …

Lexical capture: a developmental disorder of reading and spelling.

We report a case of a 35-year-old teacher, Louise, with a history of learning difficulties and current evidence of developmental phonological dyslexia and dysgraphia. Her reading, spelling, and remembering of novel stimuli written in conventional alphabetic script was poor, but she performed significantly better when the same items were written in the International Phonetic Alphabet, a system that she learned when studying linguistics. Her impaired performance in tasks of phonemic segmentation and short-term memory, which are generally associated with impaired reading and spelling of unfamilia

A neuropsychological theory of multiple systems in category learning.

A neuropsychological theory is proposed that assumes category learning is a competition between separate verbal and implicit (i.e., procedural-learning-based) categorization systems. The theory assumes that the caudate nucleus is an important component of the implicit system and that the anterior cingulate and prefrontal cortices are critical to the verbal system. In addition to making predictions for normal human adults, the theory makes specific predictions for children, elderly people, and patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, major depression, amnesia, or lesio

Can an old rook learn new tricks? Vocal command comprehension and obedience in rooks (Corvus frugilegus).

Although many animal species are known to learn to respond to human verbal commands, this ability is understudied, as are the cues used to do so. For the best-studied species, the dog, domestication itself is used to justify successful attending to human communicative cues. However, the role of domestication in sensitivity to human cues remains debated. Corvids are songbirds that engage in complex communicative behaviors with conspecifics and with other species. Rooks (Corvus frugilegus) are a cognitively complex, undomesticated corvid shown to possess complex vocal behaviors, and to learn to

Dyslexia and bilingual children--does recent research assist identification?

This paper analyses some of the recent research into dyslexia in relation to monolingual and bilingual children. It focuses on the phonological approach to the identification of dyslexia. It reviews the literature on those aspects of phonological development which allow dyslexic children to be identified at increasingly younger ages. The literature on the phonological development of children who speak English as an additional language, and who are bilingual or multilingual, is then reviewed to compare the possibilities for identification of these children in comparison with those for monolingu

The development of spelling knowledge and its role in reading acquisition and reading disability.

In contrast to the hypothesis that dyslexics possess phonological deficits that are neurological in origin, I suggest that the source of the deficit is primarily experiential--that dyslexics exhibit phonological deficits because they have not learned to read and spell in a way that develops their spelling knowledge so that it penetrates and comes to symbolize their phonological knowledge. Evidence from normal reading and spelling development as well as from comparisons of dyslexic and nondyslexic readers is offered to support this thesis.

The contributions of executive functions to mathematical learning difficulties and mathematical talent during adolescence.

Are mathematical learning difficulties caused by impairment of the abilities that underlie mathematical talent? Or are mathematical difficulties and talent qualitatively different? The main goal of this study was to determine whether mathematical learning difficulties are explained by the same executive functions as mathematical talent. We screened a pool of 2,682 first-year high school students and selected 48 for evaluation, dividing them into three groups: those with mathematical learning difficulties (n = 16), those with typical performance (n = 16), and those with mathematical talent (n =

Learning disabilities spectrum and sexual dimorphic abilities in girls with congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia could provide a promising model for the study of the effects of hormones on cognition. The aim of this study was to assess sexual dimorphic abilities related to oral language, spatial abilities, and verbal fluency and to determine the existence of learning disabilities in 11 congenital girls with adrenal hyperplasia compared with 11 healthy girls. Both groups underwent a neuropsychological evaluation using the Child Neuropsychological Assessment battery for Spanish-speaking children. Results showed that the congenital adrenal hyperplasia group had a significantly

A neuropsychological approach to the assessment of adults with learning disabilities in vocational rehabilitation.

A description of cognitive, academic, and personality characteristics of adults with learning disabilities (LD) referred for services through the state/federal vocational rehabilitation system is presented. This study builds on the work of Minskoff, Hawks, Steidle, and Hoffmann (1989) and validates their conclusions that, as a group, adults with LD participating in vocational rehabilitation are homogeneous relative to other groups of adults with LD. By taking a neuropsychological approach to the assessment process, the current study further subdivided the assessment categories described by Min

Targeted cognitive training improves auditory and verbal outcomes among treatment refractory schizophrenia patients mandated to residential care.

Computerized targeted cognitive training (TCT) of auditory processing has been shown to improve verbal learning in several clinical trials of schizophrenia outpatients. Less is known, however, about the effectiveness of this promising intervention in more chronic, treatment-refractory patients who are treated in non-academic settings. This study aimed to determine whether TCT improves auditory processing, verbal learning, and clinical symptoms in SZ patients mandated to receive care at a locked residential rehabilitation center. Secondarily, potential factors that moderate TCT's effectiveness …

Are French dyslexic children sensitive to consonant sonority in segmentation strategies? Preliminary evidence from a letter detection task.

This paper aims to investigate whether--and how--consonant sonority (obstruent vs. sonorant) and status (coda vs. onset) within syllable boundaries modulate the syllable-based segmentation strategies. Here, it is questioned whether French dyslexic children, who experience acoustic-phonetic (i.e., voicing) and phonological impairments, are sensitive to an optimal 'sonorant coda-obstruent onset' sonority profile as a cue for a syllable-based segmentation. To examine these questions, we used a modified version of the illusory conjunction paradigm with French dyslexic children compared with both c

Subtypes of developmental dyslexia in transparent orthographies: a comment on Lachmann and Van Leeuwen (2008).

Lachmann and Van Leeuwen (2008) proposed two diagnostic subtypes of developmental dyslexia in a language with transparent orthography (German). The classification was based on reading time, rather than reading errors, for lists of words and nonwords. The two subtypes were "frequent-word reading impaired" (FWRI) and "nonword reading impaired" (NWRI). Notably, FWRI were very slow in reading high-frequency words but as fast as controls in reading nonwords; ca. one-third of these children showed this "reversed lexicality effect" in a particularly marked fashion (i.e., read nonwords two to three ti

The effects of blending and spelling training on the decoding skills of young poor readers.

Blending and spelling training were compared in this experiment to determine which intervention would improve the decoding skills of two first-grade boys with learning disabilities who were in the phonetic cue stage of reading. Additionally, the two boys received pre- and posttest administrations of a phonemic segmentation task. Although neither intervention proved superior, the children met the learning criterion for both interventions and demonstrated both maintenance and generalization of their skills. They also improved their phonemic skills, even though independent training in this area w

The Nature of Paired Associate Learning Deficits in Chinese Children with Developmental Dyslexia.

Previous studies have found that individuals with dyslexia perform poorly in paired associate learning (PAL) tasks, which were explained by a deficit in cross-modal association or verbal demand in alphabetic language. However, the nature of PAL deficits in non-alphabetic languages remains unclear. In this study, we conducted PAL and priming tasks in visual-visual, visual-verbal, verbal-visual, and verbal-verbal conditions to dissociate the cross-modal and verbal demands in Chinese children with dyslexia. In Experiment 1, children with dyslexia performed worse in verbal-involved PAL (visual-ver

Individual differences in theory of mind ability in middle childhood and links with verbal ability and autistic traits: a twin study.

Identifying the causal processes involved in theory of mind (ToM) development during childhood is an important goal for social neuroscience. This study aimed to investigate, for the first time, the extent to which individual differences in ToM are influenced by genes and environment in middle childhood, and to assess how ToM is linked to autistic-like behaviors and verbal ability. Over 600 9-year-old twin pairs from a subsample of the Twins Early Development Study were assessed on an advanced test of ToM and on verbal ability. Parents, teachers, and the children themselves provided ratings of
