[X-ray changes in persons with facial skeleton deformities of the "long face" type].

The analysis of X-ray data suggested that the syndrome of "long face" could be caused by three types of changes: (1), preferential lengthening of lower jaw bone; (2), combination of lower micrognathia with increased vertical dimensions of middle facial zone; (3), prevailing anterior extension of the middle facial zone. In all the three groups the vertical dimensions of the chin region of mandible were frequently enlarged.

One-year re-entry results of guided bone regeneration around immediately placed implants with immediate or conventional loading: a case series.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this one-year, re-entry case series was to evaluate clinically the amount of bone regeneration following the placement of immediate implants in fresh extraction sockets where bone allograft has been used to treat horizontal gaps and buccal-bone dehiscence defects in periodontally compromised patients. METHODS: Sixteen patients consented to participate, each having one immediate implant with > 3 mm buccal dehiscence bone defects and > or = 2 mm horizontal defects between the implant and socket wall. Peri-implant defects were treated using a demineralized freeze-dried bone

Esthetic and functional reconstruction of large mandibular defects using free fibula flap and implant-retained prosthetics - a case series with long-term follow-up.

BACKGROUND: The reconstructive and rehabilitative management of large mandibular defects with basal continuity is challenging in many respects, especially in the vertical dimension. The free fibula flap is an under-utilised but efficient approach in this indication. The aim of this case series is to demonstrate its use and long-term success. CASE PRESENTATION: Three cases are presented, where the patient had a large bone defect (at least 5 cm in length and 1 cm in the vertical dimension), but the continuity of the mandible was maintained. Two cases were related to pathological fracture and on

Evaluation of design parameters on the outcome of intrastromal ring surgery using biomechanical simulations.

BACKGROUND: The cornea plays a role in the refractive power of the eye, and when its natural curvature and thickness are compromised by diseases such as keratoconus or high myopia, this results in loss of visual acuity. Intracorneal rings (ICRs) were developed as a treatment option to restore the natural corneal curvature by implanting rings into tunnels cut within the corneal stroma. However, selecting and placing the appropriate ring can be difficult, and predicting refractive outcomes is challenging. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to better understand the design parameters of the

An evaluation of growth and stability in untreated and treated subjects.

This retrospective longitudinal study compared skeletal and dental changes in orthodontically treated patients with changes in a comparable untreated group to evaluate the relationship between skeletal changes and mandibular incisor crowding. Cephalograms and models of 44 untreated subjects from the Broadbent-Bolton Growth Study and 43 treated patients were evaluated at "posttreatment" (14.3 +/- 1.5 and 15.2 +/- 1.1 years, respectively) and at "postretention" (23.2 +/- 3.4 and 28.9 +/- 3.6 years, respectively). Cranial base and mandibular superimpositions were used to measure cephalometric cha

Craniofacial repercussions in maxillary lateral incisors agenesis.

OBJECTIVES: Assessment of the influence of maxillary lateral incisor agenesis (MLIA) on the facial morphogenesis. METHODS: Evaluation of the skeletal dimensions of the upper maxilla and its incisor region. Analysis was performed among three groups: individuals with MLIA, its relatives and the normal population. Among these a comparison between adults and growing individuals was performed. RESULTS: MLIA may interfere with the maxillary length and the anterosuperior facial height, negatively conditioning on its potential growth. MLIA was not correlated with changes of the palatine plane inclin

Experts' clinical diagnosis test as a gold standard for cephalometric evaluation of vertical facial excess.

OBJECTIVE: Cephalometric measures are used to evaluate vertical facial excess (VFE), however anyone of them have been validated against a gold standard to this purpose. Also, there are differences between cephalometric results and clinical evaluation. This study pretends to validate experts' clinical diagnosis test (ECDT) as gold standard for severe VFE, with the purpose of validating further against it the cephalometric measures results. METHODS: A consensus (Delphi method) was done to determine if ECDT could be used as gold standard for evident VFE (n=12 experts). A scale of 9 items was ini

Management of severe partial hypodontia: case report.

Hypodontia is characterized by partial or total congenital missing of one or more teeth, on one or both dentitions. Heredity is the main etiological factor and the principal clinical features are reduction on number, size and form of teeth, and late eruption. Removable partial prosthesis, fixed prosthesis, overdentures and adhesive prosthesis are alternative treatments; and the indication is type dependent. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical case of an eleven-year-old child with eight missing permanent teeth of idiopathic etiology. The patient had facial and skeletal symmetry,

Maxillary implants and the growing patient.

Maxillary skeletal and dental growth results in dramatic changes in all three dimensions during active growth. Experimental evidence and the behavior of ankylosed teeth suggest that an osseointegrated object remains stationary in the bone surrounding it and does not move or adapt to bone remodeling. Growth changes may result in the burying or loss of implants depending on the placement site. Hence, implants placed in the early mixed dentition have a poor prognosis of continued usefulness through puberty. When placed early, implants may disturb growth or have to be replaced. Implants placed dur

Severe vertical overlap: a modified method of treatment.

Severe vertical overlap may predispose the patient to abnormal function, improper mastication, excessive stress, and functional problems such as bruxing, clenching, and craniomandibular disorders. This report describes the establishment of a new occlusal relationship by using the potential of posterior tooth eruption with the Hawley bite plane or the canine platform method. It was used in patients with a full complement of teeth or with some missing teeth. Patients treated by either the Hawley bite plane or the canine platform demonstrate a stable and long-lasting new occlusal relationship. Th

Horse-shoe sandwich osteotomy of the edentulous maxilla as a preprosthetic procedure.

A preprosthetic procedure for treatment of severe atrophy of the maxilla is reported. By means of the horse-shoe sandwich osteotomy of the edentulous maxilla with interposition of iliac crest or ribs in combination with a modified submucous vestibuloplasty there is the possibility of increasing the vestibular and palatal height and improving the mucosal contour in one surgical session. The method, which is described in details, avoids the disadvantages of the earlier operation methods of direct osseous augmentation and the Le Fort-I-osteotomy of the edentulous maxilla. The satisfactory results

A new method of inserting endosseous implants in totally atrophic maxillae.

A new method is described (Sailer, 1988) whereby endosseous implants are inserted in the totally atrophic maxilla, the intermaxillary relationship and vertical dimension corrected and a vestibuloplasty performed during one surgical procedure. The method can also be used to treat minor degrees of maxillary alveolar atrophy. The procedure enables 20 mm-long Titanium screws to be used in totally atrophic maxillae. The following surgical procedures are carried out during one operation: A Le Fort I osteotomy, removal of the mucous membrane of the sinus floor, obturation of the denuded maxillary sin

Vertically oval corneas in a child with holoprosencephaly.

Vertically oval-shaped corneas are an uncommon ophthalmic finding. The normal human cornea has an oval shape, but is wider in the horizontal dimension. The etiology of vertically oval corneas is unclear. This report presents a case of bilateral vertical oval corneas in a male infant with semilobar holoprosencephaly.
