Momentary discomfort caused by vibration of railway vehicle.

When trains pass level crossings or turnouts, they are momentarily subject to relatively strong vibrations. In railway engineering, evaluation of the riding comfort under such occasional vibrations is called the momentary evaluation, which is distinguished from the long-term evaluation. In order to identify the effective vibrational characteristics on the momentary evaluation now controversial in Japan, an experiment was performed with a riding comfort simulator. Twenty adult subjects were exposed to lateral vibration with varying peak acceleration and crest factor. Referring to the vibrations…

Hand-arm vibration in tropical rain forestry workers.

Working conditions and health hazards including vibration syndrome related to forestry work using chain-saws were studied in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The subjects comprised 291 workers including 97 chain-saw operators. The health examination consisted of peripheral circulatory and sensory tests in the upper extremities. The vibration spectrum measured at the handle of the chain-saw indicated that these acceleration levels would lead to a moderately high risk of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). The peripheral circulatory function tests revealed dysfunction after more than five years v…

Analysis of knee vibration signals using linear prediction.

Clinical methods used at present for the diagnosis of cartilage pathology in the knee are invasive in nature, and carry some risks. There exists a need for the development of a safe, objective, noninvasive method for early detection, localization, and quantification of cartilage pathology in the knee. This paper investigates the possibility of developing such a method based on an analysis of vibrations produced by joint surfaces rubbing against one another during normal movement. In particular, the method of modeling by linear prediction is used for adaptive segmentation and parameterization o…

Acute effects of transient vertical whole-body vibration.

The question as to whether shock-type whole-body vibration causes increasingly acute strain was investigated. Random vibrations were superimposed with shocks differing in amplitude and in number per unit of time in a systematic manner. The weighted root mean square (rms) acceleration was kept constant in all over the varied experiments. A total of 17 men were exposed to vibration from an electrohydraulic simulator. The following strain criteria were used: biodynamic behavior of the trunk and the head, electrical activity of the muscles of the back and the neck, subjective sensation, skin tempe…

[Two cases of scleroderma associated with vibration syndrome].

Case 1, a 49-year-old male who had been engaged in repair and reclamation of automobile tires, developed symptoms of vibration syndrome (Raynaud's phenomenon, numbness of both hands, tinnitus and impaired hearing) after some 30 years' use of a grinder and impact wrench. Two years thereafter, multiple sclerodermic lesions appeared over the trunk, upper extremities, and thighs; these disappeared about 2 years later. Histologically, hyperplasia and nodular swelling of collagen bundles were present in the dermis. An immunological study showed the serum to be positive for anti-centromere antibody, …

Forestry workers exposed to vibration: a neurological study.

Neurological findings were examined in 186 forestry workers with a mean exposure to chain saw vibration of 16.6 hours. The prevalence of active vibration induced white fingers was 5%, parethaesias of the hands 53%, and muscle weakness 13%. Clinical polyneuropathy was observed in 16 forestry workers in the hands (7.5%) which did not correlate with alcohol consumption. Seventy nine forestry workers of the total population were selected for electromyographic examination. Generalised EMG based polyneuropathy in the hands was observed in only two of the 79 forestry workers (2.5%). The carpal tunnel…

Vibration-induced white finger disease: a case report.

A syndrome of pain, stiffness and numbness associated with vascular changes that develops in the hands of those who use vibrating tools has been termed vibration-induced white finger disease. The authors describe such a case that occurred in a 22-year-old man. A change of job and a course of physiotherapy alleviated the symptoms and improved circulation. A review of the literature and the authors' findings suggest that this condition is a result of marked changes in the vascular supply to the hand from repetitive blunt trauma. Arteriographic evidence of deficient palmar arch vasculature is pre…

Measuring correlated electronic and vibrational spectral dynamics using line shapes in two-dimensional electronic-vibrational spectroscopy.

Two-dimensional electronic-vibrational (2DEV) spectroscopy is an experimental technique that shows great promise in its ability to provide detailed information concerning the interactions between the electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom in molecular systems. The physical quantities 2DEV is particularly suited for measuring have not yet been fully determined, nor how these effects manifest in the spectra. In this work, we investigate the use of the center line slope of a peak in a 2DEV spectrum as a measure of both the dynamic and static correlations between the electronic and vibratio…

Vibrational assignments of six-coordinate ferrous heme nitrosyls: new insight from nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy.

This Communication addresses a long-standing problem: the exact vibrational assignments of the low-energy modes of the Fe-N-O subunit in six-coordinate ferrous heme nitrosyl model complexes. This problem is addressed using nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS) coupled to (15)N(18)O isotope labeling and detailed simulations of the obtained data. Two isotope-sensitive features are identified at 437 and 563 cm(-1). Normal coordinate analysis shows that the 437 cm(-1) mode corresponds to the Fe-NO stretch, whereas the 563 cm(-1) band is identified with the Fe-N-O bend. The relative NRV…

Finite element study on vibration behavior of the human head in an upright sitting posture under fore-aft whole-body vibration.

To quantify the response characteristics of varying positions of the human head in an upright sitting posture under fore-aft whole-body vibration, modal and random response analysis in 0-20 Hz was conducted on a previously created whole-body finite element model with detailed anatomical structure. The study revealed two main peaks in the transmissibility of the seat to the head, with direct-axis peak frequencies of 0.76 and 2.74 Hz, respectively, and cross-axis peak frequencies of around 2.9 and 5.3 Hz, respectively. Moreover, the direct-axis peaks decreased from the top of the head to four si…

A Randomized Trial on the Effect of Bone Tissue on Vibration-induced Muscle Strength Gain and Vibration-induced Reflex Muscle Activity.

BACKGROUND: Whole-body vibration (WBV) induces reflex muscle activity and leads to increased muscle strength. However, little is known about the physiological mechanisms underlying the effects of whole-body vibration on muscular performance. Tonic vibration reflex is the most commonly cited mechanism to explain the effects of whole-body vibration on muscular performance, although there is no conclusive evidence that tonic vibration reflex occurs. The bone myoregulation reflex is another neurological mechanism used to explain the effects of vibration on muscular performance. Bone myoregulation …

Bad vibrations? The prevalence of itch and erythema induced by whole body vibration training: a questionnaire-based study in users and therapists.

BACKGROUND: The phenomenon of itch and erythema induced by whole body vibration (WBV) is extensively discussed in social media and popular press. The existence of this phenomenon has been confirmed in an experimental study by our group, however, its prevalence and dependency on technical settings (e.g. device, frequency, amplitude, intervals) has not been studied so far. METHODS: This cross-sectional, questionnaire-based, multi-center study aimed to investigate itch and erythema in the use of WBV devices. Specially designed questionnaires were used to collect data on itch and/or erythema occu…

[The effect of the vibration and noise factor on the physical work capacity and autonomic nervous system function of workers in vibration-hazardous jobs].

An unexampled study was made of the peripheral vegetative incompetence syndrome developing in vibration disease. It is shown that chronic occupational exposure to vibration and noise results in damage to the segmentary apparatus of the vegetative nervous system. Vegetative inadequacies are manifested by impairement of cardiovascular functions. With exposure to vibration and noise, it is the sympathetic portion of the vegetative nervous system that is first affected. The service duration-related progression of the pathological process results in increase of the share of parasympathetic patholog…

Low-frequency vibrations in resonance Raman spectra of horse heart myoglobin. Iron-ligand and iron-nitrogen vibrational modes.

The low-frequency regions (150--700 cm-1) of resonance Raman (RR) spectra of various complexes of oxidized and reduced horse heart myoglobin … d of the iron atom (56Fe leads to 54Fe) allow us to assign these additional lines to the stretching vibrations of the Fe-sixth ligand bond. Similarly, bands II are assigned to stretching vibrations of the Fe-N-(pyrrole) bonds. An assignment of bands VI to stretching vibrations of the Fe-Nepsilon(proximal histidine) bonds is also proposed. Mechanisms for the …
