Neonatal Visual Impairment: Etiologies, Screening, and Management.

Severe visual impairment in the newborn period can be attributed to prenatal and perinatal etiologies. Prenatal causes include various congenital anomalies such as anophthalmos or microphthalmos, congenital cataracts, congenital glaucoma, retinal dystrophies, and retinoblastoma. Acquired perinatal causes include ophthalmia neonatorum, cerebral visual impairment related to neurologic insult, and retinopathy of prematurity. Severe visual impairment can negatively affect a child's growth, development, social skills, and educational abilities, but prompt recognition and treatment of visual deficit

Improve Vision Referral Completion by Implementing the Small Steps to Eye Care Action Plan.

Vision disorders are prevalent among preschool children and can significantly interfere with early learning, literacy development, and school readiness. Although vision screening is mandated in many states, referral completion following failed screenings remains inconsistent, particularly in underserved populations. School nurses are uniquely positioned to address this gap through structured follow-up and family-centered communication. This article describes a school nurse-led quality improvement process using the Small Steps to Eye Care Action Plan to improve referral completion for preschool…

Amblyopia: Detection and Treatment.

Amblyopia is the leading cause of monocular vision loss in children. Early recognition and treatment are important to prevent vision loss. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends vision screening for all children at least once between three and five years of age to detect the presence of amblyopia or its risk factors. The American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend routine, age-appropriate red reflex testing, examination for signs of strabismus, and vision chart testing. Photoscreening may be a useful adjunct to tr…

Yet, routine vision screening may not accurately identify the brain-based visual impairment in children with CVI. Moreover, children with CVI often have medical complexity with other neurocognitive impairments and serious medical conditions that can make the diagnosis of CVI mor …

On using Vernier acuity to assess magnocellular sensitivity.

A recent study [Keri, S., & Benedek, G. (2009). Visual pathway deficit in female fragile x premutation carriers: A potential endophenotype. Brain and Cognition, 69, 291-295] has found Vernier acuity deficiencies together with contrast sensitivity defects consistent with a magnocellular deficit in female fragile x premutation carriers. This may appear to support the notion that Vernier acuity may serve as a test of magnocellular sensitivity. However, Vernier acuity deficiencies have been reported in other conditions (e.g., schizophrenia, amblyopia and cortical visual impairment) where there is

Pediatric eye conditions detected by a school-based photoscreening in American Samoa.

PURPOSE: To report the prevalence of refractive error, amblyopia, strabismus, and other ocular pathology in children participating in a vision screening program in American Samoa, a population under-represented in the ophthalmologic literature. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of school-based vision screenings using a PlusOptix S12 photoscreener in children 3-18 years of age in American Samoa over a period of 13 months. All children who failed the vision screening received a cycloplegic eye examination by a pediatric ophthalmologist, who prescribed glasses and referred child…

Association between local household income and paediatric visual outcomes: a retrospective cross-sectional study of a mobile school-based eye clinic in Orange County, California.

INTRODUCTION: Socio-economic status (SES) influences paediatric visual health by affecting eye care access, refractive error prevalence and spectacle provision. This study examines the link between household income and paediatric vision outcomes in Orange County, California, USA using data from the University of California, Irvine EyeMobile Pediatric Clinic (2021-2024). METHODS: Vision screening was conducted on 15 842 children (ages 3-10). Subsequent comprehensive eye examinations were performed on 3350 children who failed initial screening. Socio-economic stratification was based on zip-cod…

Reducing visual deficits caused by refractive errors in school and preschool children: results of a pilot school program in the Andean region of Apurimac, Peru.

BACKGROUND: Refractive error is defined as the inability of the eye to bring parallel rays of light into focus on the retina, resulting in nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (Hyperopia) or astigmatism. Uncorrected refractive error in children is associated with increased morbidity and reduced educational opportunities. Vision screening (VS) is a method for identifying children with visual impairment or eye conditions likely to lead to visual impairment. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the utility of vision screening conducted by teachers and to contribute to a better estimation of the prevalence …

Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Pediatric Ocular Diseases.

Vision is an important aspect of a child's quality of life and intellectual, social, and emotional development. Disruptions to vision during infancy and early childhood can cause lifelong vision impairment or blindness. However, early identification and treatment of eye disease can prevent loss of sight and its consequent long-term effects. Therefore, screening guidelines exist to guide physicians in detecting the most common threats to sight in the different stages of infancy and childhood. This review describes common causes of pediatric vision impairment, the recommended screening guideline

Association of symptoms and convergence and accommodative insufficiency in school-age children.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this article was to investigate the association between convergence insufficiency (CI) and accommodative insufficiency (AI) and symptoms in a group of school-aged children. METHODS: Children ages 8 to 15 years were recruited from two public and 2 private elementary schools in Southern California. The CI Symptom Survey (CISS) was administered to all children before a Modified Clinical Technique vision screening. Children with normal visual acuity, minimal uncorrected refractive error, and no strabismus were tested for CI and Al. RESULTS: Four hundred sixty nine chil…

Rotterdam AMblyopia screening effectiveness study: detection and causes of amblyopia in a large birth cohort.

PURPOSE. The Dutch population-based child health monitoring program includes regular preverbal (age range, 1-24 months) and preschool (age range, 36-72 months) vision screening. This study is on the contribution of an organized vision screening program to the detection of amblyopia. METHODS. A 7-year birth cohort study of 4624 children was started in 1996/1997 in Rotterdam. Vision screening data were obtained from the child screening centers. Treating orthoptists working at the regional ophthalmology departments provided information about diagnosis and treatment. The diagnosis was reviewed by …

Screening for glaucoma: U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement.

DESCRIPTION: Update of the 2004 U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendation on screening for glaucoma. METHODS: The USPSTF reviewed evidence on the benefits and harms of screening for glaucoma and of medical and surgical treatment of early glaucoma. Beneficial outcomes of interest included improved vision-related quality of life and reduced progression of early asymptomatic glaucoma to vision-related impairment. The USPSTF also considered evidence on the accuracy of glaucoma screening tests. POPULATION: This recommendation applies to adults who do not have vision symptoms and

[Prevalence of visual impairment in school-age children: Data analysis from PlanVue® pilot project].

PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence of visual disturbances among school-aged children in prioritized education zones in France. METHODS: The PlanVue® pilot project was designed to detect and manage visual disturbances in school-aged children in the prioritized education areas of the city of Nanterre, France. During this pilot study, a cohort of 515 children aged 4 to 13 years underwent a school vision screening between January and March 2019, consisting of an overall evaluation of the child's visual behavior, measurement of uncorrected visual acuity in each eye, objective refraction with a phot…
