A combined approach for the evaluation of a volatile organic compound emissions inventory.

Emissions inventories significantly affect photochemical air quality model performance and the development of effective control strategies. However, there have been very few studies to evaluate their accuracy. Here, to evaluate a volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions inventory, we implemented a combined approach: comparing the ratios of carbon bond (CB)-IV VOC groups to nitrogen oxides (NOx) or carbon monoxide (CO) using an emission preprocessing model, comparing the ratios of VOC source contributions from a source apportionment technique to NOx or CO, and comparing ratios of CB-IV VOC gro

Green synthesis of a superhydrophobic porous organic polymer for the removal of volatile organic compounds at high humidity.

Superhydrophobic porous organic polymers are potential sorbents for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pollution control by suppressing the competition of water molecules on their surfaces. However, the synthesis of superhydrophobic reagents usually requires large amounts of organic solvents and a long reaction time (≥ 24 h). Herein, a green mechanochemical method was developed to synthesize a superhydrophobic polymer (MSHMP-1) with the advantages of using a small amount of organic solvents (5 mL/g) and a short reaction time (2 h). Meanwhile, MSHMP-1 with a water contact angle (WCA) of 162° exh…

Quantifying Multiple Reaction Pathways for Ambient Consumed Volatile Organic Compounds Derived from Emission Sources.

A novel method was developed to quantify source-specific volatile organic compound (VOC) consumption via multiple reaction pathways, including daytime hydroxyl (•OH) radical reactions and nighttime ozone (O3) and nitrate radical (NO3•) reactions. This approach integrates positive matrix factorization (PMF) with observed and initial-concentration data, enabling simultaneous source apportionment of both emitted and chemically consumed VOCs. The method was applied to hourly VOC measurements made in Linfen, a typical industrial city in China, from April to October 2023. Eight emission sources were

Plant growth promotion mediated by volatile organic compounds during the Gongronella butleri-plant interaction.

Early-diverging Mucoromycotina fungi are widely recognized for promoting plant growth and development. However, the specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) involved and their underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this study, we used a non-contact co-culture system to investigate the effects of VOCs emitted during the interaction between the beneficial fungus Gongronella butleri w5 (w5) and plants. Using solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, we identified 1H-indole-4-carboxaldehyde (4-IC) and 4-methylbenzyl alcohol (4-MB) as the predominant VOCs detecte…

Effects of thermal drying methods on characteristic volatile organic compounds in Rosa roxburghii pomace.

This study investigated the effects of various thermal drying methods on the characteristic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of Rosa roxburghii pomace (RRP) using E-nose, HS-SPME-GC-MS, HS-GC-IMS, and multivariate analysis methods. The results revealed that HS-SPME-GC-MS and HS-GC-IMS identified 115 and 94 VOCs, respectively. HS-SPME-GC-MS demonstrated superior sensitivity in detecting esters, alcohols, and hydrocarbons, whereas HS-GC-IMS was more effective for aldehydes, and ketones. It was concluded that thermal drying methods significantly influenced the characteristic VOCs in RRP. Eleven …

Exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds and Cardiovascular Diseases: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Environmental pollution is an often-neglected contributor to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a subset of ubiquitous pollutants. Recent evidence has suggested exposure to VOCs as a possible contributor to CVD. We aimed to review the evidence for such a link between VOC exposure and cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were systematically searched for ecological and observational studies evaluating associations between exposure to VOCs and cardiovascular outcomes. The available evidence was synthesized qualitatively…

Source apportionment of volatile organic compounds in a Philadelphia fenceline community: results from THRIVEair.

BACKGROUND: Urban exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is associated with several adverse health outcomes, including cancers and respiratory outcomes. We conducted a year-long VOC monitoring campaign in South Philadelphia to evaluate the impacts of traffic and redevelopment of a former oil refinery site on local air quality. Benzene was the community's primary pollutant of concern, but we measured a broader suite of VOCs to enable source apportionment, as presented here. METHODS: In partnership with Philly Thrive, a Philadelphia-based environmental justice organization, we developed …

Pseudomonas aeruginosa-derived volatile organic compounds modulate AhR signaling to dysregulate airway mucus homeostasis.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa frequently infects chronically diseased lungs and exacerbates airway mucus hypersecretion and failure in clearance. P. aeruginosa is metabolically versatile and secretes multiple volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which have been scrutinized as potential biomarkers for diagnosing acute exacerbation in diseased lungs. However, the pathogenic roles of VOCs in mucus dysregulation are unknown. By using air-liquid interface cultures of normal and diseased human bronchial epithelial cells and a mouse model of chronic VOCs exposure, we report that dominant species of P. aerugin…

Volatile Organic Compounds in Indoor Air: Sampling, Determination, Sources, Health Risk, and Regulatory Insights.

Indoor air pollution is a serious public health issue caused by the accumulation of numerous toxic contaminants within enclosed spaces. Particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), biological contaminants (mould, bacteria, and allergies), inorganic gases (carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide), and a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are examples of common indoor air pollutants. VOCs are one of the chief indoor contaminants, and their effects on human health have made indoor air quality a serious concern. Indoor VOC concentrations are frequently higher than outdoor le…

A dataset of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) concentrations collected near a petroleum refinery area.

Air pollution is a significant environmental and public health concern, as prolonged exposure to air pollutants can lead to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as an increased risk of cancer. Highly industrialized urban areas are characterized by the presence of a wide variety of pollutants in the air. Industrial areas with petroleum refining and petrochemical facilities emit large amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere, which promotes the formation of tropospheric ozone (O3) and fine particles through photochemical processes generated in the troposphere.…

Data on the effect of wood-based panel-emitted volatile organic compounds on mice.

Wood based panels are widely used in construction and furniture due to their cost effectiveness, sustainability, and processability. However, adhesives and additives used in these engineered materials may release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including formaldehyde and BTEX compounds, affecting indoor air quality. This study presents a dataset examining VOC emissions from three commonly used panels: pine wood board (PWB), low pressure melamine particleboard (LPM), and particleboard (PB), and their potential health impacts in mice. To reflect a real-life early-phase exposure scenario, the …

Volatile organic compounds of camel milk and shubat across Kazakhstan's regions, seasons, and breeds.

Despite extensive research in recent years on camel milk composition and health benefits, limited scientific data exists on the volatile organic compound profiles of camel milk and its fermented product, shubat. This study analyzed volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in raw camel milk and shubat from six Kazakh farms across all seasons. We found that camel milk displayed higher concentrations of aldehydes, ketones, and alcohols with the main two compounds in milk being acetone and (2-Aziridinylethyl) amine. Conversely, the majority of volatile organic compounds in shubat samples belonged to este…

Vacuum-Assisted MonoTrapTM Extraction for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Profiling from Hot Mix Asphalt.

MonoTrapTM was introduced in 2009 as a novel miniaturized configuration for sorptive sampling. The method for the characterization of volatile organic compound (VOC) emission profiles from hot mix asphalt (HMA) consisted of a two-step procedure: the analytes, initially adsorbed into the coating in no vacuum- or vacuum-assistance mode, were then analyzed following an automated thermal desorption (TD) step. We took advantage of the theoretical formulation to reach some conclusions on the relationship between the physical characteristics of the monolithic material and uptake rates. A total of 35

Textile sorption and release of odorous volatile organic compounds from a synthetic sweat solution.

Body odorants typically transfer to clothing fabrics by way of liquid sweat, yet investigations of odor retention in textiles often neglect this route of exposure in their test procedures. This paper describes a novel method for transferring selected odorous volatile organic compounds to six types of textile fibers in yarn bundle form by an aqueous sweat solution. Headspace volatile organic compounds varying by chemical class (ketones, aldehydes, carboxylic acids) were monitored at discrete time intervals (30 min, 3 h, 24 h) using proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry. Lower intensities o…
