Inhalation of two putative Gulf War toxins by mice.

We employed our inhalation methodology to examine whether biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress would be produced in mice following inhalation of aerosols containing carbonaceous particles or the vapor of pesticides prevalent during the first Gulf War. Exposure to two putative Gulf War Illness toxins, fine airborne particles and the pesticide malathion, increased biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in Friend virus B (FVB) female mice. Mice inhaling particles 24 h before had increased lung lavage and plasma Leukotriene B4 (LTB4) (a biomarker of inflammation) and PGF2α (a b

Long-term psychiatric consequences of exposure to trauma in Cambodia: a regional household survey.

The long-term psychiatric consequences of exposure to war and/or mass conflict continue to be of great concern and particularly in Cambodia. The current cross-sectional study examined the relationship between history of trauma and current psychiatric and functional morbidity in 3200 randomly selected adults aged 18-60 in Cambodia. Structured interviews were conducted from November 2011 until May 2012 in two predominantly rural regions purposively selected for differing duration of exposure to the Khmer Rouge occupation. Information was also collected regarding ongoing daily stressors and intim

Health-related quality of life pre-war and during-war in cardiac patients: evidence from a multicenter prospective study - West Bank.

BACKGROUND: War imposes systemic and psychosocial stressors that can disrupt postoperative recovery and diminish quality of life. Quantitative data examining these effects in cardiac surgery populations remain scarce. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether the wartime period following October 7, 2023, independently affected postoperative health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) or valve surgery in Palestine. METHODS: In this prospective multicenter cohort, 1,686 patients who underwent cardiac surgery between September 2022 and May 2025 were

Suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among adolescents and youth in the aftermath of the Tigray war, 2024: prevalence and associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of death among adolescents and youth globally and represents an important public health concern in low- and middle-income and conflict-affected settings. Prior evidence from Ethiopia showed substantial levels of suicidal behavior among young populations even before the recent conflict. Exposure to war-related trauma, violence, displacement, and disruption of health and social systems may further increase the risk of suicidality among adolescents and youth. However, there is limited evidence regarding suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among adolescent

Relationship of Religiousness and Religious Coping with Quality of Life among War Trauma Survivors.

BACKGROUND: Long-term posttraumatic outcomes such as quality of life are dependent on a series of factors from the very exposure to traumatic events and stress appraisals, personality traits, posttraumatic growth, symptoms of Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and different coping strategies to religiousness and religious coping styles. Except of exposure to traumatic events and related stress, all other variables may have indirect mediating effects on long-term posttraumatic outcomes. The main aim of this cross-sectional study is to explore relative independent contribution of these variabl

Nonviolent civil insecurity is negatively associated with subsequent height-for-age in children aged <5 y born between 1998 and 2014 in rural areas of Africa.

BACKGROUND: Civil wars and wars between states have occurred less frequently since the start of the 21st century, but civil insecurity outside the contexts of official wars continues to plague many parts of the world. The nutritional consequences of civil insecurity may disproportionately affect children, especially if experienced during sensitive developmental periods. OBJECTIVES: This study estimated the associations between localized nonviolent and violent civil insecurity during key child nutritional periods and subsequent height-for-age z scores (HAZs) in 145,948 children born between 19

Anthrax vaccination and self-reported symptoms, functional status, and medical conditions in the National Health Survey of Gulf War Era Veterans and Their Families.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the health status of Gulf War veterans who reported receipt of anthrax vaccination and a small group of Gulf War veterans for whom documentation of anthrax vaccination exists. METHODS: Among the 11,441 Gulf War veterans who completed a health survey, 4601 reported receiving the anthrax vaccine during the war; 2979 veterans reported not receiving it; 3861 were uncertain. Also, 352 of these respondents were documented by the Department of Defense as having received anthrax vaccination. We compared the medical history of these groups of veterans using multivariate analyses.

War-related and minority-related stressors and posttraumatic stress symptoms among Palestinian Arab grandmothers in Israel: a resource-based mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to armed conflict is associated with elevated posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). Ethnic minority groups may also face minority-related stressors, such as discrimination and silencing, that compound psychological vulnerability. Conservation of resources theory suggests that loss of valued personal and social resources may help explain PTSS under prolonged adversity. Palestinian Arab grandmothers in Israel remain understudied despite central roles in multigenerational collectivist family systems, which may intensify during collective threat and heighten vulnerability to p

Emerging outbreaks associated with conflict and failing healthcare systems in the Middle East.

The escalating conflicts in the Middle East have been associated with the rapid collapse of the existing healthcare systems in affected countries. As millions of refugees flee their countries, they become vulnerable and exposed to communicable diseases that easily grow into epidemic crises. Here, we describe infectious disease epidemics that have been associated with conflicts in the Middle East, including cholera, poliomyelitis, measles, cutaneous leishmaniasis, and diphtheria, that call for appropriate preventive measures. Local ongoing wars and failing healthcare systems have resulted in re

Predictors of psychological risk and resilience among Syrian refugee children.

OBJECTIVES: War-exposed refugee children are at elevated risk for mental health problems, but a notable proportion appear resilient. We aimed to investigate the proportion of Syrian refugee children who can be considered resilient, and applied a novel approach to identify factors predicting individual differences in mental health outcomes following war exposure. METHODS: The sample included 1,528 war-exposed Syrian refugee children and their primary caregiver living in refugee settlements in Lebanon. Children were classed as having low symptoms (LS) if they scored below clinically validated c…

Development and Validation of a Brief Warzone Stressor Exposure Index.

Existing scales mainly focus on danger-based threats of death and bodily harm to assess exposure to traumatic events in war zone. However, major provocations and transgression of deeply held values and moral beliefs, as well as witnessing the suffering of others can be as traumatic as fear-inducing danger-based events. This raises the need for scales that assess both danger- and nondanger-based events among soldiers operating in modern war zones. Norwegian military personnel deployed to Afghanistan between late 2001 and end of 2020 were invited to participate in a cross-sectional survey with a

The prevalence and determinants of PTSD, anxiety, and depression in Ukrainian civilian physicians and paramedics in wartime-An observational cross-sectional study six months after outbreak.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine is the largest European land offensive since World War II. Individuals affected by conflicts such as war are at an increased risk of mental disorders, which result from frequent exposure to traumatic events and the breakdown of supportive social networks. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence and determinants of PTSD, anxiety, and depression in Ukrainian civilian physicians and paramedics six months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A cross-sectional study was conducted using validated questionnaires: The Life Events Checklist, PTSD Checklist for D

Subcortical brain atrophy in Gulf War Illness.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a multisystem disorder that has affected a substantial number of veterans who served in the 1990-1991 Gulf War. The brain is prominently affected, as manifested by the presence of neurological, cognitive and mood symptoms. Although brain dysfunction in GWI has been well documented (EBioMedicine 12:127-32, 2016), abnormalities in brain structure have been debated. Here we report a substantial (~10%) subcortical brain atrophy in GWI comprising mainly the brainstem, cerebellum and thalamus, and, to a lesser extent, basal ganglia, amygdala and diencephalon. The highest at

Global Asthma Network Phase I Syria asthma surveillance and the impact of the war.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is the most prevalent chronic respiratory disease (CRD) in children. It causes extensive morbidity and mortality worldwide. Since the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC Phase III 2001-3), there have been no worldwide standardised surveys of prevalence and severity of asthma in school children. The Global Asthma Network (GAN) Phase I aims to provide this information. We participated in GAN with the aim of tracking changes in Syria and comparing the results to those of ISAAC Phase III. We also aimed to track the impact of war pollutants and stress.

A prospective exploration of the association between acute stress disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder in reaction to war: disengaged coping as a moderator.

Background: Disengaged coping is often associated with worse mental health outcomes in reaction to stress. However, little research has explored the associations of disengaged coping and mental health consequences during warfare, especially its potentially moderating role in the relationship between acute stress disorder (ASD) and subsequent posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the context of war-related trauma. Objective: This study examined (a) the association between ASD shortly after the outbreak of the 7 October war with PTSD 6 months later and (b) the moderating role of disengaged copi

Associations of war-related PTSD symptoms with sleep disturbance: The explanatory roles of emotion regulation difficulties and intolerance of uncertainty.

OBJECTIVE: Although associations between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sleep disturbance are well-established, relatively little work has examined mechanisms that may underlie this association. This study aimed to examine the explanatory role of emotion regulation difficulties and intolerance of uncertainty (IU) in associations between PTSD symptoms and sleep disturbance among a sample of war-exposed Iraqi individuals. METHOD: We used structural equation modeling in a war-exposed nonclinical sample (N = 617; Mage = 27.63; SD = 4.81; 46.03% females) to model indirect effects from PT

Acts of omission, altered worldviews, and psychological problems among military veterans.

OBJECTIVE: The present study explored acts of omission (i.e., inactions) among military service members. We also investigated whether the meanings and interpretations that service members assign to their actions and inactions, particularly alterations to their conceptualization of themselves, others, and the world (i.e., altered worldviews) would be associated with psychological problems (specifically, depression, suicidality, posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], and alcohol use). Mechanisms Explaining the Relationship Between Maternal Torture Exposure and Youth Adjustment In Resettled Refugees: A Pilot Examination of Generational Trauma Through Moderated Mediation.

The intergenerational effects of trauma resulting from torture and war are complex and multi-faceted and have important implications for the family system. The current study aimed to identify key relationships between refugee maternal caregiver exposure to torture, mental health, and physical health with maternal-reported youth adjustment. Ninety-six Karen maternal caregivers originating from Burma and resettled in the United States participated in a cross-sectional, explanatory mixed methods study. Maternal mental health distress was found to mediate the relationship betweenmaternal torture e
