How can hydrological connectivity inform catchment scale stormwater flood management?

Landscape-based stormwater solutions can attenuate runoff locally, yet translating hydrological benefits into catchment-scale flood mitigation often remains difficult. This shortfall reflects a current site-focused paradigm that overlooks the role of hydrological connectivity (HC) in organising flood inundation. HC has long informed process understanding in fluvial hydrology, but it has been less frequently operationalised as a spatial diagnostic for urban stormwater flooding. This study applies the spatially explicit, event-aware Index of Hydrological Connectivity (IHC) to diagnose connectivi

The Geology of Aquitards in Alluvial Aquifers: A Predictive Approach Based on Facies Models.

A sophisticated understanding of the three-dimensional distribution of silt- and clay-rich bodies of strata (elements) in aquifers is critical given that they not only have the potential to act as aquitards or semi-confining units and vertically partition groundwater flow into separate aquifer zones, but also provide lateral barriers to groundwater flow, impacting contaminant distribution and groundwater flow dynamics. Additionally, when in prolonged contact with dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) or contaminated groundwater, fine-grained elements may become storage zones for contaminant ma

A Systematic Comparison of Multiple Models for Depth-Dependent Decay of Hydraulic Conductivity in Salt Lake Areas: A Case Study of Typical Boreholes in the Qaidam Basin.

Hydraulic conductivity is an important hydrogeological parameter that characterizes the hydraulic properties of subsurface media, and the pattern of its variation with depth is of great significance for groundwater system simulation and resource evaluation. However, the applicability of some existing theoretical and empirical models describing how hydraulic conductivity varies with depth in salt lake areas still lacks systematic validation and evaluation based on measured data. In this study, seven typical boreholes in the West Taijinar Lake area of the Qaidam Basin were selected as the study

Stormwater controls for channel stability: Focusing on bed material transport prevents degradation.

The hydrologic benefits of catchment-scale implementation of stormwater control measures (SCMs) in mitigating the adverse effects of urbanization are well established. Nevertheless, recent studies indicate that the Unified Stormwater Sizing Criteria (USSC) regulations, mandating the combined use of distributed and storage stormwater controls, do not protect channel stability, despite their effectiveness in reducing runoff from impervious surfaces. The USSC are the basis of SCM design in 11 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. This study employed a calibrated, sequential modeling approach,

Simulating liquefaction-induced resuspension flux in a sediment transport model.

Wave-induced liquefaction is a geological hazard under the action of cyclic wave load on seabed. Liquefaction influences the suspended sediment concentration (SSC), which is essential for sediment dynamics and marine water quality. Till now, the identification of liquefaction state and the effect of liquefaction on SSC have not been sufficiently accounted for in the sediment model. In this study, we introduced a method for simulating the liquefaction-induced resuspension flux into an ocean model. We then simulated a storm north of the Yellow River Delta, China, and validated the results using

A closed-loop analysis approach for ensuring stormwater source control design solution to achieve the intended goals.

Stormwater source controls have been adopted worldwide to address hydrological and environmental impairments caused by the spread of impervious surfaces in cities. Current design method in China uses 30-year daily rainfall records to generate relationship of rainfall volume capture ratio (αg) and daily design storm, and then uses design storm to propose design solution. However, source control performance differs from rain to rain, and hence the design solution's actual effect may deviate from αg. Borrowing closed-loop feedback concept from business domain, this study proposes closed-loop anal

Evaluating the Thiessen polygon approach for efficient parameterization of urban stormwater models.

Catchment discretization plays a key role in constructing stormwater models. Traditional methods usually require aerial or topographic data to manually partition the catchment, but this approach is challenging in areas with poor data access. Here, we propose an alternative approach, by drawing Thiessen polygons around sewer nodes to construct a sewershed model. The utility of this approach is evaluated using the EPA's Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) to simulate pipe flow in a sewershed in the City of Pittsburgh. Parameter sensitivities and model uncertainties were explored via Monte Carlo

Variability of green infrastructure performance due to climatic regimes across Sweden.

In the context of increasing urbanization and global warming, there is a growing interest in the implementation of green infrastructure (GI) across different climates and regions. Identifying an appropriate GI design criteria is essential to ensure that the design is tailored to satisfy local environmental requirements. This article aims to compare the hydrological performance of GI facilities in eleven Swedish cities by isolating the effect of climatic conditions using an identical GI design configuration. Long-term simulations based on 23-years of meteorological time-series were used as inpu

Coupled modelling of flow and non-capacity sediment transport in sewer flushing channel.

Flushing is cost-effective for mitigating sediments and constraining environmental problems in sewer systems. Previous mathematical models are almost exclusively built upon simplified governing equations evoking the assumptions of slow bed evolution and sediment transport capacity, of which the applicability remains open to question. Here a 1D coupled non-capacity model is presented for non-uniform sediment transport in sewer flushing channels, as adapted from recently established shallow water hydro-sediment-morphodynamic models for fluvial processes. The present model is tested for an experi

Improved Domenico solution for three-dimensional contaminant transport.

The Domenico solution is a widely used analytical solution in screening tools such as BioScreen, FATE5, BioChlor, ART3D, ArcNLET, Quick-Domenico, etc., to simulate the three-dimensional transport of reactive contaminants in groundwater. While being approximate, this solution presents a convenient closed-form expression for computing plume contaminant concentrations without the need for numerical integration. Previous studies have mathematically shown that the Domenico solution provides correct estimates of contaminant plume concentrations when the value of longitudinal dispersivity is zero. Ho

An Analytical Method for Assessing Recharge Using Groundwater Travel Time in Dupuit-Forchheimer Aquifers.

An analytical solution to calculate the recharge of unconfined aquifers with Dupuit-Forchheimer type flow conditions is proposed. This solution is derived from an existing closed-form analytical solution initially developed to determine groundwater travel time when the recharge of the aquifer is known. This existing solution has been modified to determine recharge when groundwater travel time is known. An illustration is given with a field case example for the Bonifacio aquifer of the island of Corsica (France), in the Mediterranean. In this aquifer, previously established differences in groun

Comparison of sediment and nutrient export and runoff characteristics from watersheds with centralized versus distributed stormwater management.

Stormwater control measures (SCMs) are used to retain stormwater and pollutants. SCMs have traditionally been installed in a centralized manner using detention to mitigate peak flows. Recently, distributed SCM networks that treat runoff near the source have been increasingly utilized. The aim of this study was to evaluate differences among watersheds that vary in SCM arrangement by assessing differences in baseflow nutrient (NOx-N and PO4-) concentrations and fluxes, stormflow export of suspended sediments and particulate phosphorus (PP), and runoff characteristics. A paired watershed approach

Crocodylus niloticus (Crocodilia) is highly sensitive to water surface waves.

Crocodiles show oriented responses to water surface wave stimuli but up to now behavioral thresholds are missing. This study determines the behavioral thresholds of crocodilians to water surface waves. Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) were conditioned to respond to single-frequency water surface wave stimuli (duration 1150 ms, frequency 15, 30, 40, 60 and 80 Hz), produced by blowing air onto the water surface. Our study shows that C. niloticus is highly sensitive to capillary water surface waves. Threshold values decreased with increasing frequency and ranged between 10.3 μm (15 Hz) and

Flushing time as a descriptor for heavily modified water bodies classification and management: application to the Huelva Harbour.

Since the flushing time is a physical descriptor used to distinguish between different types of heavily modified water bodies (HMWB), the establishment of a methodology for its calculation becomes important. In order to achieve this task, a methodological procedure involving the tide mean value and variable river flow values is proposed. The hydrodynamics were assessed using a two-dimensional model which integrates the depth-averaged mass and momentum equations in the time and space domains and includes a wet-dry point treatment method. The hydrodynamic model calibration and validation were pe

Long-term trends of surface-water mercury and methylmercury concentrations downstream of historic mining within the Carson River watershed.

The Carson River is a vital water resource for local municipalities and migratory birds travelling the Pacific Flyway. Historic mining practices that used mercury (Hg) to extract gold from Comstock Lode ore has left much of the river system heavily contaminated with Hg, a practice that continues in many parts of the world today. Between 1998 and 2013, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) collected and analyzed Carson River water for Hg and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations resulting in a sixteen year record of unfiltered total mercury (uf.THg), filtered (dissolved) Hg (f.THg), total me

The impact of methanogenesis on flow and transport in coarse sand.

The effects of biofilm growth and methane gas generation on water flow in porous media were investigated in an anaerobic two-dimensional sand-filled cell. Inoculation of the lower portion of the cell with a methanogenic culture and addition of methanol to the bottom of the cell led to biomass growth and formation of a gas phase. Biomass distributions in the water and on the sand in the cell were measured by protein analysis. The biofilm distribution on sand was observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. The formation, migration, distribution and saturation of gases in the cell were visual

Hot water epilepsy: a benign and unrecognized form.

Hot water epilepsy is a reflex epilepsy. Seizures are provoked by hot water, and result from the association of both cutaneous and heat stimuli. Described mainly in India and Japan, the condition seems to be rare in Europe, where it occurs in young children. We report five infants aged from 6 months to 2 years. They had brief seizures during bathing with activity arrest, hypotonia, and vasoactive modification; clonic movements were observed. A simple treatment-decreasing the bath temperature-can be sufficient. Sometimes an antiepileptic drug is required. Seizure course and psychomotor developm

Site of water vapor absorption in the desert cockroach, Arenivaga investigata.

The desert cockroach, Arenivaga investigata, can gain weight by absorption of water-vapor from unsaturated atmospheres above 82.5% relative humidity. Blocking the anus or the dorsal surface with wax does not prevent water vapor uptake, but interference with movements of the mouthparts or blocking the mouth with wax-prevents such uptake. Weight gains are associated with the protrusion from the mouth of two bladder-like extensions of the hypopharynx. During absorption these structures are warmer than the surrounding mouthparts, their surface temperature increasing with relative humidity. This su

Performance and longevity of colloidal silica gel in blocking vertical water flow and contaminant transport in the annuli of long-screened wells: Laboratory and numerical evaluation.

This laboratory-based study evaluated the performance and long-term (months) stability of colloidal silica (CS) gels in blocking vertical water flow and controlling chemical transport in subsurface applications, especially in the well annuli of long-screened wells. Laboratory-scale rheological tests demonstrated the injectivity of CS suspensions in expected field applications. Laboratory column, sandbox experiments and numerical modeling were used to assess the efficacy of CS gel in reducing hydraulic conductivities of the well annulus system. Further, a contaminant diffusion test was applied

Hydrologic and water quality performance of a subsurface gravel wetland treating stormwater runoff.

Subsurface gravel wetlands are an emerging type of green infrastructure that can be used to manage stormwater through the capture and slow release of runoff. They are unique to other types of green infrastructure in that they have a distinct fully saturated gravel layer below an occasionally saturated soil layer that influences pollutant removal processes. While they have been widely applied to treat wastewater, our understanding of their efficiency in treating stormwater with variable pollutant inputs is limited. To fill this gap, this study monitored the flow and water quality (total suspend
