Bioinspired heliconical auxetic biofibers for intelligent biomechanical surveillance.

Wearable bio-based fibers are emerging as platforms for biomechanical sensing and physiological interaction. However, achieving high sensitivity to subtle mechanical cues while maintaining flexibility, self-powered output, and distributed perception remains challenging. Inspired by the helical twining mechanics of climbing plant stems, we design a mechano-adaptive auxetic electronic bio-based fiber as an embodied intelligence sensing unit. The dual-modulus helical confinement, achieved by wrapping rigid aramid fiber/polydimethylsiloxane helices around a flexible collagen aggregate/waterborne p

A unified mechano-ionic skin for resolving native electromechanical coupling.

The beat-to-beat electromechanical coupling between cardiac excitation and arterial pulse propagation encodes vital cardiovascular insights, but resolving this coherence in wearables is hindered by the spatial decoupling of sensors and attenuated epidermal signals. Here, we report a unified mechano-ionic skin that preserves this coherence through conducting biopotentials and efficiently transducing arterial pressures along a single ion-conducting pathway. By synergizing molecular cation tethering with microscale stress concentration, our design breaks the symmetry of ion dynamics. This yields

A Multimodal Haptic Feedback Interface with Thin-Film Compliant Mechanism.

Multimodal cutaneous haptic interfaces can deliver multiple forms of mechanical stimulation and trigger different mechanoreceptors, enabling richer haptic information and realistic tactile sensations. Such interfaces have broad potential in healthcare, entertainment, and education. Electromagnetic (EM) actuators are particularly attractive for multimodal haptic systems due to their compact size, high controllability, and fast dynamic response. However, existing EM-based multimodal haptic devices struggle to simultaneously achieve large displacement, high output force, and effective constraint

Mechanical Contact Conditions in Wearable Reflectance Photoplethysmography: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases remain a major global health burden, highlighting the need for long-term physiological monitoring. Photoplethysmography (PPG) is widely used in wearable devices for noninvasive monitoring of heart rate (HR), rhythm, and oxygen saturation in mobile health (mHealth) apps. However, the reliability of wearable reflectance PPG depends on sensing conditions, including sensor-skin contact force and pressure. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review maps how contact force and contact pressure have been defined, controlled, measured, represented, and reported in wearable or w

Graphene-based flexible antenna for wearable and biomedical devices.

Flexible antenna design is described in this study, prototyping of a flexible graphene-based antenna for data transmission from wearable arm and abdomen imaging equipment over a 5G network. The antenna uses an 18-μm-thick graphene thin sheet for the conductive and ground radiating patch. The proposed design operates in the from 25.2-40.2 GHz frequency band and it based on the radiation patch fractal structure which allowed for adequate antenna flexibility. The invention is appropriate for wearable applications because the patch was constructed on a flexible polyamide substrate that was 1.575 m

From Prototype to Clinical Workflow: Co-Developing a Wearable Hypomimia System for Parkinson's Disease.

Hypomimia, the reduced facial expressiveness commonly seen in Parkinson's disease (PD), is clinically relevant, yet routine assessment usually relies on a single ordinal rating item in major rating scales such as the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS). This study aimed to develop and iteratively refine a wearable, cap-mounted device for hypomimia recording during routine inpatient ON/OFF assessments and to examine its usability and technical feasibility. A staged co-development process with four prototypes was conducted. After clinician workflow requirements had been incorpor

Spectral characterization of three wearable electronic ultraviolet radiation dosimeters.

Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation poses significant public health risks, including DNA damage and skin-related pathologies. This necessitates accurate studies and quantification of UV-radiation exposure. Various wearable UV dosimeters have been developed to address these needs, particularly for outdoor workers. For measuring erythemal irradiance, recommendations from the World Meteorological Organization exist but standardized methods for characterization and calibration of wearable UV dosimeters are currently limited. At Aalto University and at Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Obs

Determining Falls Risk in People with Parkinson's Disease Using Wearable Sensors: A Systematic Review.

A prior history of falls remains the strongest predictor of future falls in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). There are limited biomarkers available to identify falls risk before falls begin to occur. The aim of this review is to investigate if features associated with falls risk may be detected by wearable sensors in patients with PD. A systematic search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, and Cinahl databases was performed. Key quality criteria include sample size adequacy, data collection procedures, and the clarity of statistical analyses. The data from each included study were extr

Using Machine Learning With Wearable Devices to Advance Research and Patient Care Using Spinal Cord Injury as a Model.

Wearable devices (WDs) and machine learning (ML) are increasingly used to monitor physiological signals outside of traditional clinical environments, creating new opportunities for real-time, personalized insights. Yet the practical and ethical integration of these technologies into clinical research remains underdeveloped, especially for populations with complex, unstable physiology such as persons with spinal cord injury. In this perspective, we argue that the promise of WDs and ML can only be realized through deliberate alignment between device capabilities, physiological relevance, analyti

Multifunctional Flexible Sensors for Pressure Therapy in Burn Rehabilitation.

Pressure therapy is a widely adopted approach to suppressing hypertrophic scar formation after burns. However, current clinical practice primarily relies on the manual experience of medical staff and lacks accurate pressure feedback. Available commercial pressure sensors target high-pressure uses, mismatching low-pressure needs for burn rehabilitation, and suffer accuracy interference from nonpressure factors. To address these challenges, we developed a wearable multifunctional flexible sensor that integrates a patterned Cr/Au metallized polyimide (PI) substrate with a conductive PDMS film fea

Haptic artificial muscle skin for extended reality.

Existing haptic actuators are often rigid and limited in their ability to replicate real-world tactile sensations. We present a wearable haptic artificial muscle skin (HAMS) based on fully soft, millimeter-scale, multilayer dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) capable of significant out-of-plane deformation, a capability that typically requires rigid or liquid biasing. The DEAs use a thickness-varying multilayer structure to achieve large out-of-plane displacement and force, maintaining comfort and wearability. Experimental results demonstrate that HAMS can produce complex tactile feedback wi

Associations Between Coordination and Wearable Sensor Variables Vary by Recording Context but Not Assessment Type.

Motor coordination is an important driver of development and improved coordination assessments could facilitate better screening, diagnosis, and intervention for children at risk of developmental disorders. Wearable sensors could provide data that enhance the characterization of coordination and the clinical utility of that data may vary depending on how sensor variables from different recording contexts relate to coordination. We used wearable sensors at the wrists to capture upper-limb movement in 85 children aged 6-12. Sensor variables were extracted from two recording contexts. Structured
