Ejectosome biogenesis and assembly in the raphidophycean alga Gonyostomum semen.

The raphidophycean flagellate Gonyostomum semen (Ehrenberg) Diesing is a stramenopile protist whose ejectosomes - rod-like organelles at the cell periphery - are discharged as mucilaginous threads, which kill some zooplankton grazers. Ejectosomes are formed from fibrils, which are first distinguishable in the Golgi, where they can reach 650 nm in length, have a diameter of 21-27 nm, and possess a narrow electron-transparent lumen. Fusion of Golgi vesicles forms a post-Golgi structure containing many fibrils, which gives rise to an immature ejectosome in which some fibrils crisscross at an angl…

UV-protective sunscreen compounds and their differential accumulation across ocular tissues in fish eyes from Baltic Sea.

Many fish species achieve ultraviolet radiation (UVR) protection by accumulating mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) from their diet. High c … nd piscivorous mammals, suggesting that the trophic transfer of MAAs from the primary producers via zooplankton apparently ends in the fish.

Osmotic stress does not trigger brevetoxin production in the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis.

With the global proliferation of toxic harmful algal bloom species, there is a need to identify the environmental and biological factors tha … ncreasing evidence that brevetoxins promote survival of the dinoflagellates by deterring grazing by zooplankton. Whether they have other as-yet-unidentified cellular functions is currently unknown.

Trophic niche segregation in small pelagic fishes suggests mesopelagic pearlsides as the main transmission pathway of Anisakis larvae in a Patagonian food web.

Many parasites are transmitted through trophic interactions, yet the specific pathways connecting intermediate and definitive hosts often re … , the major intermediate hosts of anisakids, these fishes likely represent the main pathway linking zooplankton to predators in the life cycle of A. pegreffii in San Matías Gulf. Our results highlight how niche segregation among small pelagic fishes can shape parasite transmission pathways in marine ecosystems.

Predator-induced defense reduces growth rate and carrying capacity in a toxic diatom, Pseudo-nitzschia seriata.

Phytoplankton employ a wide variety of defenses to reduce mortality from zooplankton grazing. Many such defenses are inducible, that is, they are upregulated in the event of increased predation. Thus, theory predicts that they should come at a cost to the organism. When exposed to predatory cues from a copepod predator, the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia seriata upregulates the production of the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA). DA has recently been found to have grazer deterrent effects, but whether its production comes with trade-offs is still unclear. Here, we expose a strain of P. seriata to cues from…

Eye fluke infection changes diet composition in juvenile European perch (Perca fluviatilis).

Intraspecific diet specialization, usually driven by resource availability, competition and predation, is common in natural populations. How … t was evaluated using both stomach content and stable isotope analyses. Perch diet was dominated by zooplankton and benthic macroinvertebrates. Both methods indicated that with increasing eye fluke infection intensity fish had a more selective diet, feeding mainly on the benthic macroinvertebrate Dikerogammarus villosus, while less intensively infected fish a …

Ratio of Methylmercury to Dissolved Organic Carbon in Water Explains Methylmercury Bioaccumulation Across a Latitudinal Gradient from North-Temperate to Arctic Lakes.

We investigated monomethylmercury (MMHg) bioaccumulation in lakes across a 30° latitudinal gradient in eastern Canada to test the hypothesis that climate-related environmental conditions affect the sensitivity of Arctic lakes to atmospheric mercury contamination. Aquatic invertebrates (chironomid larvae, zooplankton) provided indicators of MMHg bioaccumulation near the base of benthic and planktonic food chains. In step with published data showing latitudinal declines in atmospheric mercury deposition in Canada, we observed lower total mercury concentrations in water and sediment of higher lat…

Stoichiometric controls of mercury dilution by growth.

Rapid growth could significantly reduce methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in aquatic organisms by causing a greater than proportional gain in biomass relative to MeHg (somatic growth dilution). We hypothesized that rapid growth from the consumption of high-quality algae, defined by algal nutrient stoichiometry, reduces MeHg concentrations in zooplankton, a major source of MeHg for lake fish. Using a MeHg radiotracer, we measured changes in MeHg concentrations, growth and ingestion rates in juvenile Daphnia pulex fed either high (C:P = 139) or low-quality (C:P = 1317) algae (Ankistrodesmus fa…

A novel genetic engineering platform for the effective management of biological contaminants for the production of microalgae.

Microalgal cultivation that takes advantage of solar energy is one of the most cost-effective systems for the biotechnological production of biofuels, and a range of high value products, including pharmaceuticals, fertilizers and feed. However, one of the main constraints for the cultivation of microalgae is the potential contamination with biological pollutants, such as bacteria, fungi, zooplankton or other undesirable microalgae. In closed bioreactors, the control of contamination requires the sterilization of the media, containers and all materials, which increases the cost of production, w…

Dangerous Relations in the Arctic Marine Food Web: Interactions between Toxin Producing Pseudo-nitzschia Diatoms and Calanus Copepodites.

Diatoms of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia produce domoic acid (DA), a toxin that is vectored in the marine food web, thus causing serious problems for marine organisms and humans. In spite of this, knowledge of interactions between grazing zooplankton and diatoms is restricted. In this study, we examined the interactions between Calanus copepodites and toxin producing Pseudo-nitzschia. The copepodites were fed with different concentrations of toxic P. seriata and a strain of P. obtusa that previously was tested to be non-toxic. The ingestion rates did not differ among the diets (P. seriata, P. obt…

Interspecific competition in phytoplankton drives the availability of essential mineral and biochemical nutrients.

The underlying mechanisms and consequences of competition and diversity are central themes in ecology. A higher diversity of primary, produc … sential fatty acids may contribute to the positive relationship between phytoplankton diversity and zooplankton growth, and may compensate limitations by mineral nutrients in higher trophic levels.

Re-emergence of Cholera in the Americas: Risks, Susceptibility, and Ecology.

BACKGROUND: The re-emergence of cholera in Haiti has established a new reservoir for the seventh cholera pandemic which threatens to spread to other countries in the Americas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Statistics from this new epidemic are compared to the 1991 Peru epidemic, which demonstrated the speed and complexity with which this disease can spread from country to country. Environmental factors implicated in the spread of Vibrio cholerae such as ocean currents and temperatures, as well as biotic factors from zooplankton to waterfowl pose a risk for many countries in the Americas. RESULTS: T…

Evidence for the presence of cell-surface-bound and intracellular bactericidal toxins in the dinoflagellate Heterocapsa circularisquama.

Heterocapsa circularisquama, a harmful dinoflagellate, has multiple haemolytic toxins that are considered to be involved in the toxic mechanism against shellfish and certain species of zooplankton. To evaluate the further nature of the toxins of H. circularisquama, we investigated its effects on several species of bacteria. By colony formation assay, we found that H. circularisquama had antibacterial activity toward the marine bacterium Vibrio alginolyticus in a cell density-dependent manner. When the inoculated bacterial cells were co-cultured with H. circularisquama under dinoflagellate cell…

Prey-size plastics are invading larval fish nurseries.

Life for many of the world's marine fish begins at the ocean surface. Ocean conditions dictate food availability and govern survivorship, yet little is known about the habitat preferences of larval fish during this highly vulnerable life-history stage. Here we show that surface slicks, a ubiquitous coastal ocean convergence feature, are important nurseries for larval fish from many ocean habitats at ecosystem scales. Slicks had higher densities of marine phytoplankton (1.7-fold), zooplankton (larval fish prey; 3.7-fold), and larval fish (8.1-fold) than nearby ambient waters across our study re…
