AIM: To compare pulse oximetry in children with sickle cell anaemia (SCA) and controls and test the hypothesis that vitamin C deficiency (VCD; <11.4 μmol/L) is associated with nocturnal haemoglobin oxygen desaturation in SCA.
METHODS: We undertook nocturnal and daytime pulse oximetry in 23 children with SCA (median age 8 years) with known steady-state plasma vitamin C concentrations and 18 siblings (median 7 years).

BACKGROUND: Recent case reports of scurvy indicate that vitamin C deficiency may be more prevalent that generally assumed. The Low Income Diet and Nutrition Survey (2003-05) of a representative sample of the low-income/materially deprived UK population included a plasma vitamin C measurement.
METHODS: Adults aged >or=19 years from all countries/regions of UK were screened to identify low-income/materially deprived households. A valid plasma vitamin C measurement was made in 433 men and 876 women. The results were weighted for sampling probability and non-response.

Anemia is a common complication of chronic kidney disease, particularly in patients who are on dialysis. The use of recombinant human erythropoietin has led to the eradication of severe anemia in the dialysis population. OBJECTIVES: To observe if there is any connectivity between oxidative stress and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).

BACKGROUND: Young South African women face a double-burden of overweight or obesity and iron deficiency, with the former predicting the latter.
