Mental stress due to poor organizational climate and high work commitment as predictor of 10-year registered sickness absence: a cohort study based on The Population Study of Women in Gothenburg.

OBJECTIVE: Early identification of persons at risk for sickness absence offers an opportunity to initiate preventive measures. The aim of this study was to examine whether perceived work-related stress, measured by The Work Stress Questionnaire (WSQ), predicted registered sickness absence up to 10 years later in a general working population of women. DESIGN: A survey-linkage study based on the 2004-2005 wave of the Swedish 'Population Study of Women in Gothenburg (PSWG)' and 10-year follow-up in the official MiDAS sickness absence register. SUBJECTS: A population-based cohort of women aged 3

Extreme Heat and Arrhythmia in Patients With Implanted Devices.

BACKGROUND: Arrhythmia, particularly atrial fibrillation, is on the rise globally. While increased surveillance, aging populations, and other risk factors partially explain this rise, emerging risks such as extreme heat from climate change are underexplored. METHODS: We used Product Surveillance Registry by Medtronic (2016-2023) in the United States to examine patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillator or cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator devices. We identified first arrhythmic episodes (atrial tachycardia/fibrillation [AT/AF] or ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation) r

Lyme borreliosis incidence in relation to mammalian abundance, climate, and landscape characteristics in a boreal area.

BACKGROUND: The circulation of tick-borne pathogens is influenced by the availability of ticks, the hosts of ticks and pathogens, and the environmental conditions that affect both the ticks and their hosts. Lyme borreliosis (LB), caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and transmitted by Ixodes spp. ticks, is the most common tick-borne disease in the Northern Hemisphere. Understanding the spatio-temporal dynamics of human LB incidence regarding abundance of ticks and hosts and environmental factors is essential for effective disease risk management. METHODS: We analyzed long-term (1997-2018

Spatio-temporal epidemiology of Japanese encephalitis virus infection in pig populations of eastern Uttar Pradesh, India, 2013-2022.

AIMS: Japanese encephalitis (JE) is endemic in India. Although pigs are considered important hosts and sentinels for JE outbreaks in people, limited information is available on JE virus (JEV) surveillance in pigs. METHODS AND RESULTS: We investigated the spatio-temporal distribution of JEV seroprevalence and its association with climate variables in 4451 samples from pigs in 10 districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, India, over 10 years from 2013 to 2022. The mean seroprevalence of IgG (2013-2022) and IgM (2017-2022) was 14% (95% CI 12.8-15.2) and 10.98% (95% CI 9.8-12.2), respectively. Througho

The impact of safety culture, quality of care, missed care and nurse staffing on patient falls: A multisource association study.

AIMS: To examine the association between nursing unit safety culture, quality of care, missed care and nurse staffing levels, and inpatient falls using two data sources: incidence of falls and nurses' perceptions of fall frequency in their units. The study explores the association between the two sources of patient falls and identifies if nurses' perceptions of patient fall frequency reflect the actual patient falls recorded in the incident management system. BACKGROUND: Inpatient falls are associated with severe complications that result in extended hospitalisation and increased financial co

Acute and chronic risk assessment of BTEX in the return water of hydraulic fracturing operations in Marcellus Shale.

Environmental pollution caused by human activities is a pressing issue in developed countries. In this context, it is vital to establish methodologies for the early and reliable estimation of the health risks posed by potential pollutants. Flowback and produced water (return water) from shale gas operations can contain toxic compounds, of which BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) are of concern due to their toxicity and frequent presence above regulatory limits. The return water generated by these operations is stored in ponds or tanks before reaching its final destination. Over

The role of extreme heat exposure on premature rupture of membranes in Southern California: A study from a large pregnancy cohort.

BACKGROUND: Significant mortality and morbidity in pregnant women and their offspring are linked to premature rupture of membranes (PROM). Epidemiological evidence for heat-related PROM risk is extremely limited. We investigated associations between acute heatwave exposure and spontaneous PROM. METHODS: We conducted this retrospective cohort study among mothers in Kaiser Permanente Southern California who experienced membrane ruptures during the warm season (May-September) from 2008 to 2018. Twelve definitions of heatwaves with different cut-off percentiles (75th, 90th, 95th, and 98th) and du

Temporal evolution of threshold temperatures for extremely cold days in Spain.

In contrast to research on heat waves, there are no studies in recent years that analyze the temporal evolution of threshold temperatures (Tthreshold) for extremely cold days (ECD). It is unknown whether threshold temperatures have increased more quickly than the minimum daily temperature (Tmin) in recent years. The objective of this study was to analyze the temporal evolution of the minimum daily temperature (Tmin) in a group of Spanish provinces and compare it with the evolution of threshold temperatures. An ecological, retrospective time series study was carried out using daily observations

Environmental and socioeconomic risk factors for visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis in São Paulo, Brazil.

Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease caused by the protozoan Leishmania spp. mainly affecting individuals of low socioeconomic status. In tropical regions the transmission risk to humans depends not only on environmental factors, such as vegetation cover and climate, but also on the socioeconomic characteristics of human populations. However, the relative contribution of these factors to disease risk and incidence is not well understood. Yet this information is critical for the development of epidemiological surveillance schemes and control practices. Leishmaniasis cases have increased in S

The Role of Temperature Change, Ambient Temperature, and Relative Humidity in Allergic Conjunctivitis in a US Veteran Population.

PURPOSE: Studies have implicated temperature and humidity in the pathogenesis of allergic conjunctivitis (AC), as these conditions facilitate air particulate and aeroallergen dispersion and tear film instability. Research also suggests that variation in temperature is associated with risk of asthma, but similar data are limited for AC. This study examined associations between several meteorologic conditions, including temperature variation, and AC visit risk. DESIGN: Retrospective, case-crossover study. METHODS: Data on individuals diagnosed with AC (via International Classification of Disea

Climate-related shocks and other stressors associated with depression and anxiety in Bangladesh: a nationally representative panel study.

BACKGROUND: Climate change has major implications for common mental disorders including depression and anxiety in vulnerable nations such as Bangladesh. However, knowledge gaps exist around national estimations of depression and anxiety, and the associations between the prevalence of these disorders with climate-related and sociodemographic risk factors. To address these gaps, this study analysed data from a nationally representative panel study in Bangladesh that examined climate-related and sociodemographic correlates of depression and anxiety. METHODS: Two rounds of nationally representati

The effect of relative humidity and temperature on the response of stomatal conductance to vapor pressure deficit in tropical trees.

Understanding how leaf gas exchange responds to changes in vapor pressure deficit (VPD) is key to predicting tropical forest resilience to climate change. Stomata regulate leaf water and CO2 diffusion, and respond to changes in temperature and relative humidity (RH), two drivers of VPD. At high temperatures, the cuticular pathway may also become significant and participate in the overall leaf conductance. Here, we measured gas exchange under light and dark conditions to investigate the stomatal and cuticular responses to temperature and RH on detached branches in five tropical tree species. Le

A conceptual and computational framework for modeling the complex, adaptive dynamics of epidemics: The case of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Mexico.

In the quest to ensure adequate preparedness for health emergencies caused by infectious disease pandemics, there is a need for tools that can address the myriad relevant questions related to the spread and trajectory of pandemics. A hybrid intelligence model that combines human and artificial intelligence may provide a viable solution, as it can process data from models that comprehensively integrate contextual and direct factors, effectively mimicking the social processes surrounding transmission while incorporating human interpretation to enhance our understanding of pandemics. Toward ecological forecasting of West Nile virus in Florida: Insights from two decades of sentinel chicken surveillance.

West Nile Virus (WNV) is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the United States, yet transmission activity remains difficult to predict. The present study used 20 years of digitized WNV seroconversion data from 526 sentinel chicken coops across Florida to develop spatiotemporal models with landscape and climate variables to predict WNV seroconversion at monthly and seasonal timescales. We found several environmental predictors hypothesized to impact WNV transmission were important at both timescales. Seroconversion of WNV was predicted to decrease with higher maximum temperatures dur

Effective carbon footprint assessment strategy in fly ash geopolymer concrete based on adaptive boosting learning techniques.

In light of the growing need to mitigate climate change impacts, this study presents an innovative methodology combining ensemble machine learning with experimental data to accurately predict the carbon dioxide footprint (CO2-FP) of fly ash geopolymer concrete. The approach employs adaptive boosting to enhance decision tree regression (DTR) and support vector regression (SVR), resulting in a robust predictive framework. The models used key material features, including fly ash concentration, fine and coarse aggregates, superplasticizer, curing temperature, and alkali activator levels. These fea

Global patterns of the cranial form of modern human populations described by analysis of a 3D surface homologous model.

This study assessed the regional diversity of the human cranial form by using geometric homologous models based on scanned data from 148 ethnic groups worldwide. This method adopted a template-fitting technique for a nonrigid transformation via the iterative closest point algorithm to generate the homologous meshes. Through the application of principal component analysis to 342 sampled homologous models, the largest variation was detected in overall size, and small South Asian crania were clearly verified. The next greatest diversity was found in the length/breadth proportion of the neurocrani
