Radiographic Assessment of Permanent First Molars Among Adults in Riyadh: A Retrospective Study.

Introduction The first permanent molars (FPMs) are the first permanent teeth to emerge in the oral cavity, which have an important role in dentition, dental development, and occlusion. FPMs are the most susceptible teeth to caries due to early eruption. There are many adverse consequences related to losing FPMs. Many of the previous studies focused on younger age groups. To the best of our knowledge, there needs to be more newly updated data reported in the literature regarding the status of FPMs in adults in Saudi Arabia. The study aimed to assess the status of permanent first molars among ad

Evaluating a condition-specific PROM for amelogenesis imperfecta in children and young people: insights from patients and clinicians.

PURPOSE: Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a genetic enamel defect affecting both primary and permanent dentitions, often leading to functional, aesthetic, and psychosocial challenges. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are increasingly used in paediatric dentistry. This study aimed to explore the impact of AI on oral health-related quality of life in children and adolescents using an AI-specific PROM, and to assess clinician use of the PROM in the UK. METHODS: This single-centre retrospective service evaluation involved children with AI who completed a nine-question PROM pre- and mid-tr

Variations in anterior tooth morphology and alignment based on alveolar cleft position.

BACKGROUND: Different alveolar cleft positions may influence dental morphology and alignment. The study aimed to summarize the morphology and alignment patterns of maxillary anterior teeth based on the alveolar cleft position and provide a scientific basis for phenotype-specific treatment strategies and prognostic assessments. METHODS: The sample consisted of 108 patients with nonsyndromic complete unilateral cleft lip and palate with permanent dentition. In total, 76 patients were in the mesial cleft (MC) group, with the cleft positioned mesial to the lateral incisor, and 32 patients were in

BENIGN OSSEOUS PROLIFERATIONS OF THE VENTRAL MANDIBLE IN TWO MALAYAN TAPIRS (TAPIRUS INDICUS) AND AN OKAPI (OKAPI JOHNSTONI).

Three cases of benign ossifying proliferations of the ventral mandible were diagnosed in a 22-month-old female Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus), a 12-year-old male Malayan tapir, and a 19-month-old male okapi (Okapi johnstoni) at the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance. The cases each presented with a firm, nonpainful mandibular swelling that would wax and wane in size and were minimally progressive radiographically. Positive reinforcement training, which included scratch down and station standing techniques, was used to obtain serial radiographs. Radiographs revealed mild periosteal proliferation

Radiographic Assessment of Root/Crown Ratio and Short Root Anomaly: A Retrospective Study in Chinese Population.

OBJECTIVES: Research suggested that racial and gender differences may exist in tooth root development and the prevalence of short root anomaly (SRA). However, data on Asian and specifically Chinese populations were limited. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of SRA and the characteristics of the root-to-crown ratio (R/C ratio) within the Chinese population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Modified Lind's criteria were used to measure the crown and root lengths in permanent dentition. A total of 27 142 teeth from 1000 subjects were evaluated using panoramic radiographs. Fisher's

Biology of selective caries removal: a systematic scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Primary goal of restorative caries therapy is to preserve pulp vitality and the dentition. Whereas the conventional approach of complete caries removal aims at the elimination of all affected substances without regard to losses of hard tissue or pulp vitality, the innovative concept of selective caries removal (SCR) is characterised by a targeted and non-invasive excavation. It presents a lower risk of accidental pulp exposure, which reportedly has a positive effect on tooth survival. Although clinical data show the benefits of SCR, knowledge about the biological processes during

Dentofacial biometry as a discriminant factor in the identification of remote Amazon indigenous populations.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to examine the role of dentofacial morphology in discriminating semi-isolated indigenous groups. These populations present a similar pattern of dietary habits. Studies in human genetics have reported a large intertribal genetic distance and low intratribal variation. METHODS: This study was conducted following the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines. Face dimensions were measured through facial photogrammetry, and dental arches and tooth size were evaluated using plaster models. A total of 98 subjects in the permanent

The short-term skeleto-dental effects of a new spring for the intrusion of maxillary posterior teeth in open bite patients.

BACKGROUND: The technology surrounding temporary skeletal anchorage devices has improved in leaps and bounds. However, no specific auxiliary exists for the intrusion of molars in conjunction with these devices and currently clinicians are forced to make do with available force delivery materials. A new intrusion auxiliary, the Sydney Intrusion Spring (SIS), was designed to facilitate intrusion without frequent need for reactivation or tissue irritation. METHODS: The subjects consisted of 16 adolescent patients (12 females and 4 males) with an average age of 13.1 years (range 12.2 to 14.3 year

Atypical swallowing: a review.

AIM: Atypical swallowing is a myofunctional problem consisting of an altered tongue position during the act of swallowing. High incidence in population, multifactorial etiology and the recurring connection with the presence of malocclusions made it a topic of strong interest and discussion in science. The purpose of this review is to illustrate the current orientation on the topic of atypical swallowing, trying in particular to answer two questions: 1) what kind of connection is there between atypical swallowing and malocclusion; 2) what kind of therapy should be used to solve it. METHODS: Th
