PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Epilepsy disproportionately affects those in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where diagnostic and treatment gaps persist. We highlight key recent developments and showcase practical opportunities to improve epilepsy care in resource limited settings.
RECENT FINDINGS: In LMICs, cultural, socioeconomic and infrastructural factors drive the epilepsy treatment gap. Robust implementation of the WHO Intersectoral Global Action Plan (WHO IGAP) and Mental Health Gap Action Program (mhGAP), for example, will reduce the epilepsy education gap. Engaging traditional healers and

Children suffer disproportionately from disease and disability due to environmental hazards, for reasons rooted in their biology. The contribution is substantial and increasingly recognized, particularly due to ever-increasing awareness of endocrine disruption. Regulatory actions can be traced directly to reductions in toxic exposures, with tangible benefits to society. Deep flaws remain in the policy framework in industrialized countries, failing to offer sufficient protection, but are even more limited in industrializing nations where the majority of chemical production and use will occur by

The clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of anorectal malformation has been well described in the literature, however the experience with these conditions in low-and middle-income countries is often shaped in unique ways due to the social, cultural and economic factors at work in these regions. This leads to adaptation of modifications in management options for these babies that usually present as delayed cases with added poor prognostic factors like sepsis leading to need for emergency resuscitation and overall increased morbidity and mortality. This article explores the anomaly fr

NGOs utilise a range of programming to bring about desired changes. This study examines the advantages and limitations of the range of approaches used by one particular NGO sector: working equid welfare organisations, from the perspective of NGO staff. NGO staff hold a wealth of knowledge regarding the design and implementation of welfare improvement initiatives; however this knowledge is rarely systematically documented. Through 32 semi-structured interviews the experiences of staff across multiple organisations were explored. The nine most commonly utilised approaches within equid focussed N

Addressing access to oral health care in many low- to middle-income countries is a complicated issue. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons may help engage with vulnerable populations through carefully planned dentoalveolar mission trips. The process of planning a mission includes selecting a population and identifying their unique needs, designing clinic layouts and workflows, team preparation, collection of supplies, fundraising, and advertising. During the mission, methods for protecting privacy, delivering treatment that is standard of care, and sanitation/sterilization options are reviewed. Eth

Weak pharmaceutical regulation often compounded by widespread corruption in developing countries has greatly facilitated the development of this illicit market with harmful and costly effects on public health. OBJECTIVE: Otolaryngology-related conditions impose a significant burden on low-income countries (LICs), lower-middle-income countries (LMICs), and, at times, upper-middle-income countries (UMICs), where health care resources are limited. International research collaboration with high-income countries (HICs), like the United States, can address these disparities by advancing global health knowledge. As such, the underlying objective was to define trends of collaborative otolaryngology publications among the United States and LICs, LMICs, UMICs, and other HICs as well as assess the global distr

INTRODUCTION: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a diverse set of illnesses characterized by a rapid decline in kidney function. However, kidney transplantation and supportive therapies still have many limitations in slowing the progression of kidney diseases. The effective role of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in cell-based therapy and endogenous repair for AKI is still under investigation. Several studies have indicated that MSCs could both repair and ameliorate kidney injury due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic potential effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of MSC

Enteroviruses (EVs) are responsible for extremely large-scale, periodic epidemics in pediatric cohorts, particularly in East and Southeast Asia. Clinical presentation includes a diverse disease spectrum, including hand-foot and mouth disease (HFMD), aseptic meningitis, encephalitis, acute flaccid paralysis, and acute flaccid myelitis. HFMD is predominantly attributable to EV-A types, including the major pathogen EV-A71, and coxsackieviruses, particularly CV-A6, CV-A16, and CV-A10. There have been multiple EV-A71 outbreaks associated with a profound burden of neurological disease and fatal outc

PURPOSE: We aim to summarize the literature on international patterns of care for patients with neurogenic bladder (NGB) from spinal cord injury (SCI).
METHODS: We performed a PubMed database search, hand review of references, communication with professional societies, and registry evaluations for pertinent data.
RESULTS: Established patterns of care, including SCI registries and specialty centers, are available in high-resource countries such as the US and UK. As such, mortality rates from complications of NGB/SCI are lower. Access to intermittent catheterization supplies, among other resou
