Worms: transmission from animals to man.

It is useful to know that household pets are not involved in the life cycles of some worms, for example, pinworms. Some worms require a household pet in their cycles: the dog and cat roundworms, heartworms, and the dog and cat hookworms, the larvae of which are responsible for cutaneous larva migrans. Strongyloides (threadworm) infestation is sometimes difficult to diagnose and may be traced directly to the family dog.

Protozoan and helminthic infections of the intestines of humans in the inyanga area of Rhodesia.

A survey of the protozoan and helminth species which infest the intestines of the people in the lnyanga area of Rhodesia has revealed a wide range of species. Of the protozoa, Entamoeba coli was by far the commonest species encountered (45,8%) and of the helminths, hookworms (8,2%) were the most common.

Biological activity of Juglans regia leaf extract and in silico evaluation of its phytochemicals against Plasmodium berghei target proteins.

Parasitic infections remain a major global health challenge, with helminthiasis causing significant morbidity and economic losses. Limitations of synthetic anthelmintics, such as resistance and toxicity, have encouraged the search for natural plant-based alternatives. Juglans regia (walnut) leaves are rich in bioactive phytochemicals with potential antiparasitic effects. This study aimed to evaluate the anthelmintic efficacy of the methanolic leaf extract of J. regia (JRLE) against Eisenia fetida and to assess, through molecular docking, the potential interactions of its phytochemicals with se…

Helminth Seropositivity Inversely Correlated with Th1 and Th17 Cytokines and Severe COVID-19.

Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted global health. However, Africa has reported relatively low numbers o … 9 outcomes by reducing the Th1 and Th17 responses; this highlights the potential protective role of helminthiasis against severe COVID-19. These findings provide valuable insights for the development of public health policies in helminth-endemic regions and underscore the importance of considering helminth co-infections in managing viral infections. It also off …

Study of medicinal plants used in ethnoveterinary medical system in riverine areas of Punjab, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: The use of medicinal plants to treat various veterinary illnesses has been practiced for millennia in many civilizations. Punjab … dica, Hordeum vulgare, and Pennisetum glaucum) showed a 100% FL value when used to treat diuretics, helminthiasis, digestive problems, fever, cough, worm infestation, indigestion, galactagogue, oral infections, and genital prolapse. The maximum value of disease cured level (DCL%) was recorded at 87.6% for endo- and ecto-parasitic ailments in the study area. CO …

Performance Evaluation of Three Diagnostic Methods for Soil-Transmitted Helminth Infections among Schoolchildren in Amhara Region, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths are parasitic nematodes found in the intestine. They are more prevalent in the tropics and subtropics, including Ethiopia. However, low-sensitive direct wet mount microscopy fails to detect soil-transmitted helminths among infected cases. Therefore, more sensitive and cost-effective diagnostic methods are urgently needed to minimize soil-transmitted helminthiasis morbidity. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare and evaluate the performance of diagnostic methods for soil-transmitted helminths against the "gold" standard. METHODS: An institution-based cr…

Antiparasitic properties of 4-nerolidylcatechol from Pothomorphe umbellata (L.) Miq. (Piperaceae) in vitro and in mice models with either prepatent or patent Schistosoma mansoni infections.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Roots of Pothomorphe umbellata (L.) Miq. are used in traditional medicine of Africa and South America for the treatment of malaria and helminthiasis. However, neither P. umbellata nor its isolated compounds have been evaluated against Schistosoma species. AIMS OF THIS STUDY: To investigate the antischistosomal effects of P. umbellata root extracts and the isolated compound 4-nerolidylcatechol (4-NC) against Schistosoma mansoni ex vivo and in murine models of schistosomiasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The crude hydroalcoholic (PuE) and hexane (PuH) extracts of P. …

Emerging Perspectives on the Antiparasitic Mebendazole as a Repurposed Drug for the Treatment of Brain Cancers.

Repurposing approved non-antitumor drugs is a promising and affordable strategy in drug discovery to identify new therapeutic uses different … g Mebendazole. This synthetic benzimidazole proved effective against a broad spectrum of intestinal Helminthiasis. Mebendazole can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and has been shown to inhibit the malignant progression of glioma by targeting signaling pathways related to cell proliferation, apoptosis, or invasion/migration, or by increasing the sensitivity of …

Genomic studies on Strongyloides stercoralis in northern and western Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloidiasis is a soil borne helminthiasis, which in most cases is caused by Strongyloides stercoralis. Human infections with S. fuelleborni fuelleborni and S. fuelleborni kellyi also occur. Although up to 370 million people are currently estimated to be infected with S. stercoralis, this parasite is frequently overlooked. Strongyloides stercoralis is prevalent among humans in Thailand; however, S. fuelleborni fuelleborni has also been reported. Three recent genomic studies of individual S. stercoralis worms found genetically diverse populations of S. stercoralis, with comparab…

Improvement of the liver pathology by the aqueous extract and the n-butanol fraction of Sida pilosa Retz in Schistosoma mansoni-infected mice.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Sida pilosa Retz (Malvaceae) is a plant used in Africa for the treatment of intestinal helminthiasis, lower abdominal pains and dysmenorrhea. AIM OF THE STUDY: In order to determine the potential use of S. pilosa in the treatment of schistosomiasis mansoni, we evaluated the schistosomicidal, antioxidant and anti-fibrotic properties of the aqueous extract and the n-butanol fraction of its aerial parts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: S. pilosa aqueous extract (SpAE) at 100, 200 and 400mg/kg and n-butanol fraction (SpBF) at 50, 100 and 200mg/kg were administered per os to…
