Postnatal exposure to di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a common plasticizer, is associated with allergy development in childhood, suggesting that DEHP exposure may dysregulate immune response in infants. We investigated whether DEHP exposure in newborns through medical treatment affected the gut microbiota pattern and vaccine response, which are both related to immune development. In this prospective cohort study from May 1, 2016 through July 31, 2017, newborns with respiratory distress who were given intravenous infusions (IVs) were enrolled as the DEHP group, and newborns who did not rece

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most common complication after preterm birth. Pasteurized donor human milk (DHM) has increasingly become the standard of care for very preterm infants over the use of preterm formula (PF) if the mother's own milk (MOM) is unavailable. Studies have reported beneficial effects of DHM on BPD. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies on the effects of DHM on BPD and other respiratory outcomes. Eighteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis of RCTs could not demonstrate tha

In long-standing stress situation, in malabsorption syndromes we cannot provide the adequate protein and energy intake with enteral nutrition, so we often have to add complementary parenteral feeding. Using combined enteral and "individualised" parenteral nutrition the quality of life improves, the time of hospital stay decreases. The parenteral nutrition of neonates and infants implies a great challenge for health care supplier; there is no available "All-in-One" mixture infusion below 2 years of age. We developed a new chart for parenteral nutrition, which can be modified easily according to

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) and arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6) are the major polyunsaturated fatty acids in the membranes of brain and retinal cells. Animals specifically deficient in dietary n-3 fatty acids have low DHA content in their membranes, reduced visual acuity and impaired learning ability. Studies on bottle-fed human infants have shown that adding DHA and AA to milk replacer-formulas can bring their concentrations in the infant blood lipids to values as high as those produced by breast-feeding and significantly improves mental development and maturation of visual function. Mother-to-child transmission of HIV-1 can occur during pregnancy, labor/delivery, or breastfeeding. Without intervention HIV infection occurs in about 35% of infants born to HIV-infected women: 10% during pregnancy, 15% during labor/delivery, and 10% during breastfeeding. As early as 1994, the PACTG 076-ANRS 024 study documented the remarkable effectiveness of AZT in reducing mother-to-child HIV transmission from 26% to 8% in women who did not breastfeed. Since then, AZT or multiple antiretroviral therapies has been widely used in pregnant HIV-infected women in industrialized countries resulti

Infantile diarrhea is sometimes associated with methemoglobinemia. To determine the significance of intestinal bacterial infection or overgrowth and other predisposing factors in this entity, we evaluated prospectively 45 consecutive patients who were admitted for gastroenteritis and methemoglobinemia between March 1980 and September 1992. All the patients were younger than 3 months of age. In 95% of them, methemoglobinemia occurred between the ages of 15 days to 2 months. The peak mean methemoglobin concentration was 9.4% (range, 2.4-57%). Although stool cultures were positive in only 22% of

To determine which variables most accurately define congestive heart failure (CHF) in infants, 41 patients (median age 2.5 months) were graded by four pediatric cardiologists for the presence and severity of CHF based on the following variables: amount of formula consumed per feeding, feeding time, history of diaphoresis or tachypnea, growth parameters, respiratory and heart rates, respiratory pattern, perfusion, presence of edema, diastolic filling sounds, and hepatomegaly. There were 19 patients graded as having no CHF, nine as mild, seven moderate, and six severe CHF. The most sensitive and

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a severe non-IgE-mediated food allergy with unclear prevalence and pathophysiology. FPIES typically presents in the first year of life but can present later in adulthood in an acute or chronic manner. Acute FPIES manifests 1-4 hours after ingestion of foods such as rice, oats, and cow's milk, causing repetitive vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, dehydration, and hypovolemic shock. Interestingly, affected infants are generally mistakenly diagnosed with sepsis or viral gastroenteritis. Chronic FPIES presents with episodic vomiting, watery diarrhe

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread environmental contaminants found in various consumer products, such as drinking water, infant formula, and food, as well as in human biospecimens, including blood, urine, breastmilk, and cerebrospinal fluid. Previous evidence indicates that PFAS exposure poses significant neurotoxic risks, owing to their ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and bioaccumulate in neural tissue. The developing brains of fetuses and infants are particularly susceptible to the harmful effects of environmental pollutants because of their incomplete ba…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Probiotics are widely used in paediatrics, but efficacy varies by strain and indication. In 2023, the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) Special Interest Group on Gut Microbiota and Modifications issued strain-specific recommendations for gastrointestinal disorders. This review summarises studies published since 2024 to assess whether new evidence warrants changes to these recommendations.

Glucose transporter type 1 (GLUT1) deficiency syndrome (DS) is a metabolic brain disorder caused by a deficiency resulting from SLC2A1 gene mutation and is characterized by abnormal brain metabolism and associated metabolic encephalopathy. Reduced glucose supply to the brain leads to brain damage, resulting in delayed neurodevelopment in infancy and symptoms such as eye abnormalities, microcephaly, ataxia, and rigidity. Treatment options for GLUT1 DS include ketogenic diet (KD), pharmacotherapy, and rehabilitation therapy. Of these, KD is an essential and the most important treatment method as

Cronobacter sakazakii, a foodborne pathogen, can contaminate powdered infant formula (PIF) and cause life-threatening meningitis, necrotizing colitis and meningoencephalitis in infants. Bacteriophages are increasingly considered an efficient approach to target pathogenic microorganisms. In the current study, four virulent phages that can infect C. sakazakii were isolated from sewage samples, and their biological and complete genomic characteristics were analyzed. A comparative genomic analysis was performed to investigate the functional genes and phylogenetic evolution of the four phages. The …

Sphingomyelins, the most abundant sphingolipids in most mammalian cells, appear to be among the most represented polar lipids in breast milk. Despite the variability of the data reported in the literature, human milk sphingomyelins are qualitatively unique and their quantities are five times higher than in most formula milk. The structural and functional role within the milk fat globule membranes, the involvement in neonatal neurological maturation both in neuro-typical development and in some pathological circumstances, together with the possible contribution in the intestinal development of

The evidence is mounting for a role for abnormal signaling of the stress peptide pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) and its canonical receptor PAC1 in the pathogenesis of sudden infant death syndrome. In this study, we investigated whether the PACAP receptors PAC1 or VPAC2 are involved in the neonatal cardiorespiratory response to hypercapnic stress. We used head-out plethysmography and surface ECG electrodes to assess cardiorespiratory responses to an 8% hypercapnic challenge in unanesthetized and spontaneously breathing 4-day-old PAC1 or VPAC2 knockout (KO) and wild-t

To understand the presumed role of maternal dengue-specific antibodies received until birth in the development of this primary DHF in infants, we investigated a mathematical model based on a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations that mimics cells, virus and antibodies interactions. The neutralization and enhancement activities of maternal antibodies against the virus are represented by a function derived from experimental data and knowledge from the medical liter

BACKGROUND: Platelet mass index (PMI) is associated with platelet functionality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of PMI in predicting the severity of transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN).
METHODS: Infants with gestational age ≥37 weeks and birthweight ≥2,000 g who were given nasal intermittent mandatory ventilation for TTN ≤6 h after birth were retrospectively enrolled in this study. PMI was calculated using the following formula: PMI = platelet count × mean platelet volume/103 (fL/nL). The study infants (n = 101) were divided into two groups according to the duration of ta
